Takeda Pharmaceuticals and Boston Medical Center (BMC) have initiated a strategic research collaboration to decarbonize the value chain throughout the healthcare ecosystem. One of the most difficult environmental challenges facing the industry today is greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions released from the disposal of regulated medical waste, including pharmaceutical packaging and single-use plastics. A key objective of this analysis is to effectively identify, pilot, and share decarbonization solutions that other healthcare organizations can adopt.

The Province of Alberta opened the $1.4 billion Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre in October of 2024. Designed by Stantec and DIALOG, the state-of-the art complex provides 2 million sf of space for research, treatment, and educational services. This hub for world-class oncology care and innovation offers 100 patient exam rooms, 12 radiation vaults, 90 chemotherapy seats, and over 160 inpatient beds.

The University of California is planning to construct the UCSF Life Sciences Building as part of a major redevelopment of the former Dogpatch Power Station in San Francisco. The transformative facility will bring research, innovation, primary and specialty care clinics, and world-class cancer treatment to a new waterfront destination. Standing eight stories above ground, the structure will include two basement levels for a state-of-the-art proton therapy center that will begin operations in 2029.

Cincinnati Children's broke ground on the $42 million Winslow Research Pavilion in September of 2024. The three-story, 45,000-sf building will enable teams of physicians, investigators, research nurses, data managers, laboratory scientists, and investigational pharmacists to engage in collaborative discovery. The Gamble Vaccine Research Center will occupy the top two levels, with a floor offering 16 beds for adult overnight studies situated above offices for outpatient studies.

The University of Nebraska Medical Center is constructing the $105 million Campus Operations and Research Excellence (CORE) building in Omaha. Designed by LEO A DALY, the six-level, 180,870-gsf structure will feature three stories of state-of-the-art wet labs, including a 30,800-sf floor for research programs in oncology, drug discovery, and other strategic priorities. Approximately 61,600 sf of leasable shell space will accommodate private tenants or supply additional capacity for future growth.

The University of Kentucky began construction in spring of 2024 on the $781 million Cancer and Advanced Ambulatory Building in Lexington. Designed by Champlin Architecture and HGA, the 550,000-sf structure will serve as the new home for the Markey Cancer Center, the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in the state. This pivotal project aims to streamline the delivery of care and improve health outcomes by consolidating outpatient clinics and oncology support services in a single integrated location.

The University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) is partnering with Grumman|Butkus Associates on a retrocommissioning initiative that is expected to deliver significant energy savings. Spanning nearly 1.7 million sf, the project includes the evaluation of seven existing buildings to identify deficiencies and craft innovative solutions.

UCSF Health is planning to construct a $1.49 billion hospital in Oakland that will enable the delivery of world-class pediatric care for decades to come. Designed by SmithGroup to optimize therapeutic outcomes, the seven-story, 277,500-sf facility will be illuminated by natural light, with numerous outdoor areas that are accessible to patients, families and staff. Strategic programming will allow sophisticated instrumentation to be accessed when needed without impeding clinical processes.

Roper Hall, the new medical education building at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, features a 240-person active learning theater, a dedicated medical student commons, 16 small seminar rooms, six medium-size classrooms, a medical simulation center, and a clinical skills suite for inter-professional training … and not a single lecture hall.

UC Davis Health broke ground in July of 2024 on the $3.75 billion California Tower in Sacramento. Designed by SmithGroup, the 907,000-sf complex will add a 14-story structure and a five-story pavilion to the existing medical center. The transformative development will provide 12 hybrid operating rooms, a state-of-the-art imaging center, and two helicopter landing decks. Ensuring comprehensive healthcare delivery in the region for the next 50 years, the resilient facility will supply 334 private inpatient rooms.

Lahey Hospital & Medical Center (LHMC) has completed three construction projects on its Burlington campus that will provide dynamic modalities for the delivery of world-class care. Margulies Perruzzi performed architectural services for all three developments at the tertiary academic medical center, complementing the numerous LHMC facilities that the firm has worked on in the past. Seamlessly integrating advanced technology with human-centric design, these capital initiatives are defining an environment engineered for optimal therapeutic impact.

East Los Angeles Community College District is planning to construct the $145 million Kinesiology, Wellness, and Athletic Complex in Monterey Park, Calif. Designed by HED, the 110,000-sf structure will act as a prominent campus gateway where students can connect with their peers, the local community, and the therapeutic power of nature. The biophilic facility will showcase the college’s health science programs to those attending sporting events, while catalyzing the evolution of the west campus as a destination for personal and social wellbeing.

Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., is a highly collaborative organization at the forefront of both research and clinical care, with 20% of clinical faculty supporting research studies and 12,000 studies under way at any given time. A central paradigm of its translational research workplace is a “condo” model, where a group of investigators with a well-defined mission elect to share research space and equipment to foster collaboration and innovation. Now, a recent initiative is harnessing data in new ways to build upon and expand the power of the condo to advance Mayo Clinic’s mission for decades to come. 

Cleveland Clinic is planning to construct a 210,000-sf sports science facility that will also serve as the new home for the Cleveland Cavaliers. Populous designed the Global Peak Performance Center to support the health of athletes of all levels while positioning the city as an international destination for wellness. 

Johns Hopkins University broke ground in June of 2024 on a significant expansion of the Bloomberg School of Public Health. The South Building will rise next to the school’s existing home in the heart of the East Baltimore campus to accommodate growing programs while driving interaction between faculty, clinicians, and students.
