UCSF Health is planning to construct a $1.49 billion hospital in Oakland that will enable the delivery of world-class pediatric care for decades to come. Designed by SmithGroup to optimize therapeutic outcomes, the seven-story, 277,500-sf facility will be illuminated by natural light, with numerous outdoor areas that are accessible to patients, families and staff. Strategic programming will allow sophisticated instrumentation to be accessed when needed without impeding clinical processes. An expanded emergency department will provide seven surgical suites, an imaging and diagnostic center, and a neonatal intensive care unit. Upon completion in 2030, the seismically sound facility will offer 137 single-patient rooms, while also accommodating families with multiple children requiring care. A 20-bed behavioral unit will also be created.
Targeting LEED Gold certification, the transformative development is part of a $1.62 billion modernization of UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland. Sustainable practices will reduce energy consumption and waste production on the 11-acre site, which will supply 120 charging stations for electric vehicles. Other projects include construction of a new administration building, renovation of the existing patient tower, and implementation of critical infrastructure upgrades.
