The University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) is partnering with Grumman|Butkus Associates on a retrocommissioning initiative that is expected to deliver significant energy savings. Spanning nearly 1.7 million sf, the project includes the evaluation of seven existing buildings to identify deficiencies and craft innovative solutions. Improvements may be achieved with little cost impact through control adjustments in the newer structures, such as the Del Monte Institute for Neuroscience, Kornberg Medical Research Center, Wilmot Cancer Center, and Golisano Children's Hospital. More significant upgrades are planned in the Access Center, the S and GG wings, and the Ambulatory Care Facility.

A list of recommended actions is created and prioritized based on estimated impacts, with an emphasis on the optimization of existing systems instead of new construction or equipment replacement. By addressing the issues revealed through the retrocommissioning process, URMC will advance its ambitious sustainability goals and elevate the experience of patients, visitors, and staff. Technologies for temperature and humidity regulation will ensure these structures continue to provide healthy and comfortable indoor environments. The retrocommissioning process will also generate insights that will be applied to future capital developments.

Funding for the project, including up to $1 million in consultancy fees, comes from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).
