Johns Hopkins University broke ground in June of 2024 on a significant expansion of the Bloomberg School of Public Health. The South Building will rise next to the school’s existing home in the heart of the East Baltimore campus to accommodate growing programs while driving interaction between faculty, clinicians, and students. Designed by Hopkins Architects with Hord Coplan Macht as architect of record, the seven-story facility will collocate public health education, research, and practice in a dynamic hub for collaboration and engagement. The 250,000-gsf structure will feature departmental neighborhoods with informal gathering spaces that flow from one to another to encourage interdisciplinary exchange.
Inspired by the principles of transparency, connectivity, and sustainability, the flexible building will incorporate media production broadcast and podcast studios, as well as smart classrooms equipped with hybrid learning technologies. An expansive entry plaza will open the facility up to the greater community, complemented by an iconic central forum for gatherings and events. The existing School of Nursing courtyard will be expanded to provide a shared green space between the two schools. Targeting LEED Gold certification, the transformative development is slated for completion in late 2026.
