University of Glasgow Plans Imaging Centre of Excellence

The University of Glasgow began construction in fall of 2015 on the $25 million Imaging Centre of Excellence at the South Glasgow Hospitals Campus in Scotland. Designed by BMJ Architects, the project includes redevelopment of an existing building to provide advanced medical research space for neurological and cardiovascular conditions and will feature a 7-Tesla clinical MRI scanner.

Cincinnati Children's Hospital Opens Clinical Sciences Pavilion

Cincinnati Children's Hospital opened the $205 million Clinical Sciences Pavilion in June of 2015. The 15-story, 445,000-sf translational research tower will house over 1,500 scientists, clinicians, and staff engaged in the application of medical discoveries to patient care. The facility features a three-story atrium, a clinical trials center, advanced imaging suites, and laboratories and offices arranged in research neighborhoods to foster interaction and collaboration. Construction began on the pavilion in 2012.

Tyler Junior College Opens Nursing and Health Sciences Center

Tyler Junior College completed construction of the $47.5 million Robert M. Rogers Nursing & Health Sciences Center in May of 2015. Tripling available healthcare instructional space, the 137,000-sf facility features flexible teaching labs and classrooms as well as a dental clinic and a campus health center. SmithGroupJJR provided architectural and engineering services for the facility in collaboration with Eubanks Harris Roberts CraigHGR+Turner was the construction manager-at-risk.

Shriners Hospitals for Children Breaks Ground on Pasadena Medical Center

Shriners Hospitals for Children broke ground in April of 2015 on the $60 million Pasadena Medical Center. Designed by CO Architects & SRG Partnership, the project includes 164,000 sf of new construction as well as demolition of existing buildings. The outpatient care facility will provide an ambulatory surgical center, clinical space, diagnostic suites, rehabilitation units, and three levels of underground parking with green roof terraces. The general contractor for the project is DPR Construction.

University of Vermont Medical Center Plans Inpatient Facility

The University of Vermont Medical Center is planning to construct a $187.3 million inpatient facility on its Colchester Avenue campus in Burlington. The seven-story, 180,000-sf facility will provide 128 private rooms with natural lighting and individual bathrooms on the four upper floors, replacing existing beds in double-occupancy rooms in older buildings. Construction is slated to begin in summer of 2015 with completion in fall of 2018.

Rex Healthcare Constructs Heart and Vascular Hospital

Rex Healthcare is building the $235 million Heart and Vascular Hospital in Raleigh. Located on the University of North Carolina medical campus, the eight-story, 300,000-sf tower will provide 127 inpatient rooms including an intensive care unit. Construction began on the project in September of 2014 and completion is expected in March of 2017. General contractor Skanska was awarded a $93 million contract to build the facility. Rex Hospital is part of the UNC Health Care system.

University of Virginia Medical Center Expands Charlottesville Campus

The University of Virginia Medical Center is building a 46,000-sf education, imaging, and conference facility on its Charlottesville campus. Designed by CO Architects of Los Angeles in association with Train & Partners Architects, the $25 million Education Resource Center will physically connect the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center with the existing parking garage. The four-story facility will house simulation laboratories for medical training, diagnostic imaging suites, multipurpose learning spaces, and offices.

The Center for Care and Discovery, at the University of Chicago Medical Center, is dedicated to patient care and designed for flexibility. The massive 1.2 million-sf structure stands only 12 stories high, including two stories of mechanical space, but its footprint occupies the north side of two city blocks and spans the street between them.

CHI Health Partners with Creighton University on Academic Medical Center

CHI Health is partnering with Creighton University to build a $35 million academic medical center in Omaha. Ground was broken on the 80,000-sf complex in May of 2015 and completion is expected in late 2016. The project will include a freestanding emergency department as well as outpatient diagnosis and treatment facilities including space for cardiology, women's services, and psychiatry. The center is sited adjacent to Creighton University and will house the Family Medicine Residency Program.

St. Luke's University Health Network Breaks Ground on Bartonsville Hospital

St. Luke's University Health Network broke ground in late April of 2015 on the $80 million St. Luke’s Hospital-Monroe Campus in Bartonsville, Pa. The four-story, 180,000-sf facility will provide 108 private inpatient rooms including 12 beds for critical care patients, operating rooms, an emergency room, a cardiac catheterization lab, a helipad, and an advanced diagnostic imaging suite. Occupancy is expected in October of 2016.

Saint Anthony College of Nursing Builds Rock Valley Campus

Saint Anthony College of Nursing is moving to a new facility on the campus of Rock Valley College in Rockford, Ill. The four-story, 117,000-sf Health Science Center will provide 13 classrooms and 10 labs. Rock Valley College will occupy approximately 80,000 sf in the $32 million building and the top two floors will be leased by Saint Anthony. Construction began in June of 2015 and occupancy is expected in January of 2017.

IU Health and Indiana University Plan Regional Academic Medical Center

IU Health, Indiana University, and IU Bloomington Hospital are partnering to create a new regional academic health center. Located adjacent to the IU Technology Park, the project includes construction of a replacement facility for IU Health Bloomington Hospital and an instructional building for the Indiana University School of Medicine. The regional academic health complex will promote collaboration between faculty, researchers, clinicians, medical staff, and students. Design work will begin in late spring of 2015.

Mercer University School of Medicine Expands Savannah Campus

Mercer University School of Medicine is engaged in an $18 million expansion of its Savannah campus at Memorial University Medical Center. Allowing an increase in enrollment from 160 to 240 students, the project includes renovation of 26,500 sf in the Hoskins Center for Biomedical Research to create updated classrooms, offices, labs, and library space. A 31,000-sf addition will be constructed to provide exam rooms for clinical training, simulation labs, tutorial rooms, student study spaces, and a student lounge.

Papworth Hospital Builds Cambridge Heart & Lung Facilities

Papworth Hospital has awarded Skanska a $208 million contract to a construct a medical center for heart and lung care in the United Kingdom. Located on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, the $246 million replacement facility is slated for completion in 2018. A second building, the adjacent Heart & Lung Research Institute (HLRI), is being developed in partnership with the University of Cambridge.
