Stetson University Breaks Ground on Health Sciences Building

Stetson University broke ground in June of 2021 on the Cici & Hyatt Brown Hall for Health & Innovation in DeLand, Fla. Designed by Kahler Slater in association with Harvard Jolly Architecture, the 40,000-sf facility will offer flexible and transparent classrooms for active learning, teaching labs for health and environmental sciences, a GIS computer lab, and a Stress Management and Resiliency Training (SMART) lab.

Indiana Tech Breaks Ground on Engineering Expansion and Renovation

Indiana Tech broke ground in May of 2021 on a $21.5 million expansion and renovation of Zollner Engineering Center in Fort Wayne. The first phase of the project comprises a 30,000-sf addition that will open in fall of 2022. Renovation of the existing 40,000-sf structure will begin in May of 2022 with occupancy expected in fall of 2023. Classrooms and labs in the center will remain open throughout the project. Academic and research activities will be relocated into the addition to enable the renovation to proceed.

University Facilities Planners Prioritize New Construction and Renovations

University of Cincinnati Breaks Ground on College of Law

The University of Cincinnati began construction in March of 2021 on a $45.6 million renovation and expansion of Linder Hall to create a new home for the College of Law. Designed by Perkins+Will and BHDP Architecture, the project will repurpose and enlarge the 84,443-sf structure to create a 116,635-sf facility featuring a two-story lobby atrium, three flexible 50-seat classrooms, a 90-seat classroom, and a 160-seat auditorium that can function as an appellate courtroom.

Vibalogics Creates Virotherapy Manufacturing Facility

Vibalogics is creating a 110,000-sf facility for the production of oncolytic viruses, viral vector vaccines, and viral vector gene therapy products in Boxborough, Mass. Supporting late-phase clinical and commercial manufacturing operations, the highly flexible structure will include 2,000-liter bioreactors, multiple cGMP production suites, offices, warehouse space, and labs for research, development, and quality control. Measuring the Human Factor Value in Academic STEM Facilities

As the landscape for academic institutions grows more competitive, determining how human factors impact the design of STEM facilities is becoming a significant consideration when it comes to attracting students and research faculty. As a result, team members at Francis Cauffman Architects are developing a set of metrics to identify and assess the value of design features that influence occupant experience in academic STEM spaces with the goal of creating an index that can be used to inform future renovation and new construction projects. Human factor points are allocated to spaces and design features that have a demonstrated positive impact on student enrollment, result in high levels of user satisfaction, and accommodate the teaching and research goals of the facility. In a post-COVID world, this additional evaluation tool may be more important than ever.

Codiak BioSciences Installs G-CON PODs in Clinical Manufacturing Facility

Codiak BioSciences is constructing a 12,000-sf clinical manufacturing center in Lexington, Mass. The project includes the build-out of a leased lab and office building to create a GMP facility for the production of exosome therapeutics. Codiak is incorporating G-CON Manufacturing's PODs into the center to provide flexible cleanroom capacity.
