Nanotronics opened its 45,000-sf headquarters and manufacturing hub in May of 2021 at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in New York. Seamlessly integrating research, development, and production activities, the technology-rich facility supports the creation of smart factory hardware and software that combines robotics, optical microscopy, artificial intelligence, and machine learning platforms. Sited in a former ship-building warehouse, the renovated structure enables investigators to collaborate with machinists to formulate highly efficient modalities that can decrease plant footprints, reduce waste, and accelerate innovation. Designed by Rogers Partners Architects + Urban Designers, the center also accommodates education and job training programs in partnership with City University of New York, Cornell Tech, New York University, and Columbia University. Construction began in September of 2019 on the $11 million project, which has achieved carbon neutrality through adaptive reuse of an existing building and the integration of cross-laminated timber (CLT) components.
