Harvard University Completes Houghton Library Renovation

Harvard University completed a renovation of the historic Houghton Library in January of 2022. Acting as the school's principal repository for rare books and manuscripts, the updated facility features a redesigned entrance forecourt with a broad, welcoming staircase. Designed by Ann Beha Architects, the project included modifications to the library's oval lobby to create a new display setting for the library’s special collections, with space for modern exhibition cases around the perimeter. Two strategically placed openings are aligned with exterior windows to admit natural but modulated light. A relocated and expanded cloakroom with lockers provides secure storage for patrons’ belongings, and a new visitor elevator enables direct access to public spaces on all levels of the building, including new ground-floor ADA-compliant restrooms and second-floor exhibition space and classrooms. A reconfigured reading room on the first floor includes a group study room and a consultation suite for reader check-in and materials requests. Full-height glazed partitions, a cork floor, and an acoustically treated ceiling foster an environment of quiet focus where improved lighting, adjustable-height chairs, and custom-designed tables make research comfortable and accessible for all.

The project team included Consigli Construction, MEP engineer R.W. Sullivan, structural engineer LeMessurier Consultants, acoustical engineer Acentech, lighting designer Sladen Feinstein, code consultant Hastings, and landscape architect Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates. Kalin Associates detailed the construction specifications with Existing Conditions providing building documentation services. IKD designed the exhibits, signage, and graphics.
