Kaiser Permanente Santa Teresa Builds New Emergency Room

Kaiser Permanente will occupy a 29,812-sf training facility and a 50,885-sf reference lab in Catellus Development's Regatta Business Park in Richmond. The 80,697-sf lease is in addition to Kaiser's existing 37,960-sf optical lab in the park. The new facilities will bring an additional 100 Kaiser employees to the site.
Underwood-Memorial Hospital has awarded RTKL Associates the design contract for the first phase of a master planned expansion and renovation program. The medical complex currently spans a three-block area in Woodbury, New Jersey. Construction for the three-year project is expected to begin in mid-2003. In addition to doubling the capacity of the emergency department, physical medicine, occupational, and speech therapies will be relocated and expanded. New imaging equipment and improvements to the radiology department will be completed.
Kennedy Health System is building a 20,000-sf free-standing facility housing 24 hemodialysis stations in Voorhees, N.J. The building features a reverse osmosis water delivery system. Construction of the facility began in June and is slated for completion at the beginning of December 2002.
Inova Health System broke ground on Sept. 24 on an $18-million emergency department expansion at Inova Fairfax Hospital/Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children. The emergency facilities will be expanded by 11,000 sf of additional space, and 20,650 sf of existing space will be renovated. The project will increase the number of treatment spaces form 35 to 54, as well as adding new trauma rooms, 12 pediatric treatment rooms, 19 acute care treatment rooms, a 7,300-sf ambulance bay, and a helipad.
Memorial Hermann Healthcare System and the University of Texas Health Science Center are planning to build a 400,000-sf, 25-story medical office and ambulatory care center in Houston.
Children's Hospital of Philadelphia recently celebrated the structural completion of its South Tower with a topping-off ceremony. The 10-story, 332,000-sf inpatient-care facility, part of a multi-year $650-million expansion plan, will enable the hospital to increase its bed capacity from 381 to 430. As part of the South Tower project, the pediatric intensive care unit, cardiac center and pediatric oncology center will also be expanded and renovated. The emergency department, which annually accommodates 67,000 visits, will be expanded as well.
Tenet Healthcare Corp. is planning an $8-million emergency department replacement project at the South Fulton Medical Center. The renovation is part of Tenet's $30-million capital improvement plan for the hospital, which includes a $2-million renovation of the HVAC systems, new cardiovascular facilities, and a renovated women's services department.
Falmouth Hospital has selected SMMA/Hoskins Scott Associates, a practice group of SMMA/Symmes Maini & McKee Associates, to design a 63,250-sf medical pavilion. The three-story building will house medical offices, patient care facilities, rehabilitation services and an endoscopy suite.
Union General Hospital in Blairsville, Ga., has opened the $1.7-million Cancer Treatment Center. The 10,000-sf center will provide both physician education and patient therapy. Stegenga + Partners of Atlanta designed the facility, which is owned by North Georgia Radiation Partners LLC.
Scott & White, a Temple, Texas-based healthcare company, is planning the 77,000-sf Scott & White Center for Diagnostic and Specialty Care in Round Rock. The $27-million center will house 31 physicians specializing in gastroenterology, cardiology, orthopedics, ophthalmology, and general surgery. Construction is slated to begin in June of 2003 and reach completion in late 2004.
Exempla Community Hospital has selected Broomfield, Colo.-based Capstone Planning & Control to provide independent cost estimation verification for a new hospital in Lafayette, Colo. The facility will be approximately 400,000 sf and have a construction cost of $130 million. Davis Partnership of Denver and HKS Architects of Dallas are working together to design the facility, and MA Mortenson/Saunders joint venture will be the CM/GC.
Littleton Adventist Hospital has selected Capstone Planning & Control of Broomfield, Colo., to provide project controls and master schedules for a 130,000-sf expansion. With related renovations on four levels of the existing hospital, the expansion will include a new emergency department, imaging, surgery, two new operating rooms, a 32-bed expansion to the obstetrics nursing and well baby recovery unit, a central plant addition, and related sitework including a new helipad.
Centura Health has contracted Broomfield, Colo.-based Capstone Planning & Development to provide project cost controls and master schedules for the new Parker Adventist Hospital in Parker, Colo. The 200,000-sf, $55-million facility has a total project cost of $108-million and will combine the design and construction in a fast-track schedule.
Jacobi Medical Center, a member of the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation, held a "topping off" ceremony on September 17 for its new 365,000-sf replacement hospital, intended as the first phase in a multi-million master plan. Cannon Design was retained for the programming, planning and design of the new facility, which houses 132 beds in medical/surgical services, 41 beds in pediatrics and PICU services, 44 critical care beds, 24 beds in medical rehabilitation, and 98 beds in behavioral health/alcohol services.
