Scott & White Build Round Rock Diagnostic & Specialty Care Center

Scott & White, a Temple, Texas-based healthcare company, is planning the 77,000-sf Scott & White Center for Diagnostic and Specialty Care in Round Rock. The $27-million center will house 31 physicians specializing in gastroenterology, cardiology, orthopedics, ophthalmology, and general surgery. Construction is slated to begin in June of 2003 and reach completion in late 2004.

Exempla Community Hospital Plans New Facility

Exempla Community Hospital has selected Broomfield, Colo.-based Capstone Planning & Control to provide independent cost estimation verification for a new hospital in Lafayette, Colo. The facility will be approximately 400,000 sf and have a construction cost of $130 million. Davis Partnership of Denver and HKS Architects of Dallas are working together to design the facility, and MA Mortenson/Saunders joint venture will be the CM/GC.

Littleton Adventist Hospital Expands

Littleton Adventist Hospital has selected Capstone Planning & Control of Broomfield, Colo., to provide project controls and master schedules for a 130,000-sf expansion. With related renovations on four levels of the existing hospital, the expansion will include a new emergency department, imaging, surgery, two new operating rooms, a 32-bed expansion to the obstetrics nursing and well baby recovery unit, a central plant addition, and related sitework including a new helipad.

Centura Health Builds Parker Adventist Hospital

Centura Health has contracted Broomfield, Colo.-based Capstone Planning & Development to provide project cost controls and master schedules for the new Parker Adventist Hospital in Parker, Colo. The 200,000-sf, $55-million facility has a total project cost of $108-million and will combine the design and construction in a fast-track schedule.

Jacobi Medical Center Constructs Replacement Hospital

Jacobi Medical Center, a member of the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation, held a "topping off" ceremony on September 17 for its new 365,000-sf replacement hospital, intended as the first phase in a multi-million master plan. Cannon Design was retained for the programming, planning and design of the new facility, which houses 132 beds in medical/surgical services, 41 beds in pediatrics and PICU services, 44 critical care beds, 24 beds in medical rehabilitation, and 98 beds in behavioral health/alcohol services.

Phoenixville Hospital Builds Open-Heart Surgery Addition

Phoenixville Hospital, part of the University of Pennsylvania Health System, is building a two-story $9.3-million open-heart surgery and advanced catheterization addition. Extending the hospital's operating suite by 2,405 sf, the project will create two additional 600-sf operating rooms. The project includes hospital renovations to accommodate a step-down recovery unit and cardiac intensive-care beds.

Inova Unveils Decontamination Facilities

Inova Health System has opened new decontamination facilities at all five Inova hospitals, including Inova Fairfax Hospital, as part of an emergency preparedness initiative. Each unit houses 6 to 8 shower stalls, designed and built by Chantilly-based Scott Long Construction, and has a decontamination capacity of 500 patients per hour in the event of a bioterrorism attack. The total project construction cost was approximately $350,000.

UCSF Builds Fresno Medical School

The University of California San Francisco (UCSF) is building a $26-million, 55,000-sf facility in Fresno to accommodate up to 45 students in its UCSF Fresno residency program. Located on the Community Regional Medical Center campus, the three-story building will function as a headquarters, housing the Associate Dean's office, a library, seven residency programs, and an auditorium with videoconferencing capabilities. Groundbreaking for the facility is scheduled for Oct. 22.

Northwestern Develops Phase One of Life Sciences Pavilion

Northwestern University is developing Phase One of the Gladys & Arthur Pancoe Life Sciences Pavilion, a new 88,000-sf research facility housing the Center for Experimental Animal Research on the university's Evanston campus. The project will accommodate research for the University and Northwestern Healthcare’s Evanston Hospital. Designed by Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Partnership of Los Angeles, the four-story building with basement will house flexible research labs, faculty offices, vivarium, auditorium, and a café.

World Trade Center Research Development Proposed

A plan for the World Trade Center including healthcare and biotechnology research facilities has been proposed by KMD Architects, a San Francisco firm with offices in New York. The plan also features a research tower, a 70-story hotel/office tower, and a separate 60-story student housing tower. Adjacent low rise buildings would house university satellite campuses including 5,000 residential units. The complex would include a performing arts center, open space, and memorials throughout the development.

University of Missouri Builds Life Sciences Center

The University of Missouri Columbia is building a new 124,000-nsf Life Sciences Center (LSC). Construction began in December of 2001 on the $60-million project which will include a DNA research facility, five teaching/computer labs, a 250-seat auditorium, 50 research labs, technologically advanced classrooms, a greenhouse, and multipurpose equipment rooms. The facility will provide flexible space to maximize interactions and foster interdisciplinary team research.

Comanche County Memorial Hospital Builds Outpatient Center Addition

Comanche County Memorial Hospital and Watkins Hamilton Ross have just begun construction on a four-story Outpatient Center addition to the existing hospital. The project is expected to complete construction in fall 2003. The 124,675-sf building will include an outpatient surgery unit and surgery recovery area with direct access to the hospital's surgery suites. Diagnostic imaging, women's imaging, pre-admit testing, a public education center, and a dedicated sports medicine clinic and orthopedic physicians offices complete the program.

ValleyCare Health System Expands Bay Area Facilities

ValleyCare Health System, a Pleasanton and Livermore community hospital system, is engaged in 180,000 sf of new construction totalling almost $94 million. Adding 40 acute and intensive care beds to its 97-bed Pleasanton hospital, ValleyCare will also expand operating room, clinical, outpatient, and medical office facilities. Currently under construction on the Livermore campus is the 65,000-sf "Lifestyle RX", a health, wellness and fitness center open to patients and the general population.

University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center Plans Education Building

The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center plans to build the 129,100-sf Education Building to provide interdisciplinary learning for health care professionals. The facility will integrate research knowledge, flexibility in teaching environment and technology, and state-of-the-art equipment and training. Cost for planning, design and construction of the Education building is estimated at $40-million.
