Published 10/10/2002

Underwood-Memorial Hospital has awarded RTKL Associates the design contract for the first phase of a master planned expansion and renovation program. The medical complex currently spans a three-block area in Woodbury, New Jersey. Construction for the three-year project is expected to begin in mid-2003. In addition to doubling the capacity of the emergency department, physical medicine, occupational, and speech therapies will be relocated and expanded. New imaging equipment and improvements to the radiology department will be completed. The project also calls for increasing select ambulatory services. When complete, more than 42,000 sf will be renovated, and 60,000 sf of new space will be added, bringing the total square footage of the facility to more than 385,000 sf.

Consultants on the project include R.G. Vanderweil Engineers, Princeton, N.J.; the civil engineer is Schoor Depalma, Vorhees, N.J.; the structural engineer is O'Donnell & Naccarato of Philadelphia. Whiting-Turner Contractors of Baltimore serves as the construction manager.
