Willis Eye Hospital Under Construction

Willis Eye Hospital is developing a new 150,000-sf hospital in Philadelphia. The purchase of air rights enabled construction of the 14-story office and medical facility on top of an existing office and parking garage, a challenge for architect Andre Zlotnicki of HLM Design. Addition of an external glass elevator will enable patrons to access the hospital, which commences on the seventh floor.

Washington Hospital Develops Terrorism Response Unit

Washington Hospital Center is developing an emergency department that converts quickly to terrorist-ready mode as needed. The full-service ER One is a prototype terrorism response unit that includes design specifications for a 21st century facility. The design plan, backed by $2.2 million in federal funding, could be finished in six to nine months, with model completion in 18 months. Security experts join physicians and paramedics from hospitals nationwide on the design team.

South Jersey Health Builds Regional Medical Center

South Jersey Health System began construction in December 2001 on its new Regional Medical Center. The 238-bed, 405,000-sf hospital will house an enhanced emergency department, a Level II neonatal nursery, and specialized cardiac services. Each floor of the four-story hospital will focus on a different program. Services for mothers and babies will occupy the ground floor, with surgical patients on the second floor, medicine on the third and cardiology on the fourth. Rooms are all private and feature critical care monitoring technology.

Cleveland Clinic Completes New Digestive Disease Center

The new 55,000-sf Digestive Disease Center for the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio, is the largest specialty facility of its kind in the nation. Designed by van Dijk Pace Westlake Architects, the $10 million Center joins together the departments of Gastroenterology & Hepatology and Colorectal Surgery. van Dijk Pace Westlake Architects renovated the third floor of the Cleveland Clinic's Crile Building. The purpose of the project is to combine all of the disciplines related to digestive disease in one outpatient facility.

The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor has planned a new cardiovascular center, including educational, research and clinical components. Located on the university's main health science campus, the free-standing facility will be designed and programmed by Shepley Bulfinch Richardson and Abbott.

Montgomery College Builds Health Sciences Building

Montgomery College’s new $25-million, 7,186-sf Health Sciences Building, slated to begin construction in April 2002, will include a primary care clinic that offers charity medical care to the needy local community. The clinic, scheduled to open in early 2004, will be operated by Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, Md. Clinical instruction will be provided by hospital medical practitioners working directly with Montgomery’s nursing students.

Easter Seals Plans Regional HQ in Silver Spring

 Easter Seals is planning to begin construction in 2002 on a four-story regional headquarters in Silver Spring. The Harry and Jeanett Weinberg Inter-Generational Care Center will be housed at the facility. It will provide an adult day care center, and also accommodate 102 children and 60 adults. Architect for the project is Weihe Design Group of Washington; the developer is Atlantic Realty.

Center For Advanced Medicine Planned for Brigham and Women's Hospital

The Brigham and Women's Hospital is planning a $175 million, 350,000-sf ambulatory care facility--the Center for Advanced Medicine--in Boston slated for completion in spring of 2005. The 10-story building will house clinical and administrative space, providing state-of-the-art care and specialty services to adult outpatients. Included in the project is a 300-car below-grade parking facility.

Kaiser Permanente To Develop Antioch Campus

The City of Antioch has granted Kaiser Permanente approval to develop a new 6-building medical office campus in the summer of 2002. The facility is scheduled for completion in September 2003. The 78-acre complex could accommodate a hospital which, if approved, could begin construction in 2006. The campus will feature a $30 million, 60,500-sf medical outpatient center housing facilities for a staff of 300 and 38 physicians. Kaiser's existing building in Antioch is an outpatient medical office totalling 120,000 sf.

Massachusetts General Hospital Redesign In the Works

Cambridge Seven Associates, Inc., and Michael Fieldman Architects are developing an overall site Master Plan for the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Boston Campus. The plan will provide a framework for further expansion and includes implementation of a new 640,000-sf ambulatory building and a 725-car underground garage over the next six years.

Boston Medical Center Renovation Planned

Boston Medical Center has selected Boston-based RF Walsh Co. Inc. to renovate an 8-story, 66,000-sf former surgical building. The $14 million project, designed by Beacon Architectural Associates, will provide office facilities for departments including human resources, patient financial services and payroll.

UW Medical Center Breaks Ground on Surgery Pavilion

The University of Washington Medical Center has broken ground on a $100-million surgery center. Located in Seattle's University District, the three-story, 160,000-sf Surgery Pavilion is being handled by general contractor Hoffman Construction of Washington. Twenty-seven individual bids will be awarded to subcontractors for electrical, mechanical, and interior and exterior work.

University of Pennsylvania Plans Riverview Campus

 The University of Pennsylvania Riverview Campus master plan was completed in April 2001 by Cambridge, Mass.-based Tsoi/Kobus & Associates. The 20-acre Philadelphia Civic Center site will be transformed into a mixed-use healthcare and research center serving the needs of the Children's Hospital of Pennsylvania (CHOP) and the University of Pennsylvania.

Mass General Builds Research Facility at Former Navy Yard

 Massachusetts General Hospital has renovated the historic 95,000-sf Charlestown Navy Yard Building 114, where the Navy built wooden boats, to provide 60,000 for biomedical research and research support activities; a 3,000-sf conference center; an 8,000-sf animal facility; and approximately 6,000-sf of public space. The primary occupant is the Center for Aging, Genetics, and Neurodegeration.
