Yale's Smilow Cancer Hospital Nears Completion

The 497,000-sf Smilow Cancer Hospital is slated for completion in 2009 in New Haven, Conn. Providing expanded clinical space for Yale New Haven Hospital, Yale Cancer Center, and Yale School of Medicine, the 14-story integrated facility will house 112 inpatient beds, a women's cancer center, surgical suites, diagnostic imaging, radiology, and outpatient treatment rooms. The Yale Cancer Center is recognized by the National Cancer Institute as a comprehensive cancer center.

Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Plans Expansion

Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital has selected HGA as executive architect and Kohn Pederson Fox as design architect for the second phase of expansion at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif. The project will include the addition of two four-story inpatient towers to the existing Stanford Hospital & Clinics campus. Construction will begin in 2010 with completion expected in 2014.

Beth Israel Deaconess Expands Needham Campus

Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital is engaged in a $30 million expansion of its campus in Needham, Ma.  The 30,000-sf, two-story addition will house an expanded emergency room, MRI suite, and 24 private patient rooms. The project, which includes renovations to the existing hospital, was designed by Steffian Bradley Architects with Boston-based Suffolk Construction as general contractor. Construction began in March of 2008 with completion slated for fall of 2009.

Central Washington Hospital Expands Wenatchee Facility

Central Washington Hospital will begin construction in spring of 2009 on a $150 million expansion of its Wenatchee hospital. Designed by HDR Architects of Omaha, the 190,000-sf addition will include a trauma facility, 174 private patient rooms, and an obstetrics unit. Comprised of four stories above grade and one below, the expansion will feature 310-sf “acuity flexible” inpatient rooms to reduce patient transfers if acute care is needed. The project contractor is Mortenson Construction of Seattle. Completion is expected in late 2010.

Walter Reed Replacement Facility Breaks Ground in Bethesda

Walter Reed National Medical Center broke ground in July of 2008 on a $970 million replacement facility at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md.  Merging Army, Navy, and Air Force medical care, the 6.7 million-sf facility is slated for completion by 2011. Constructed adjacent to the Bethesda Naval Hospital, the treatment, research, and teaching facility will include a four-story inpatient building and a six-story outpatient building.

Highland Hospital Plans Acute Care Tower

Highland Hospital will initiate construction in early 2009 on a $682 million acute care tower in Oakland, Calif. Replacing Highland’s existing inpatient facility, the 230,000-sf project will create a nine-story, seismically sound replacement tower with 160 beds.

UC San Diego Medical Center Designs Inpatient Tower

UC San Diego Medical Center has selected Cannon Design as project architect for a new inpatient tower on its East Campus in La Jolla, Calif. The facility will break ground in 2012 with completion slated for 2015. The project, which will bring total bed count at the La Jolla hospital to 505, is part of a long term plan to build a major University Medical Center on the East Campus. Proximity to the School of Medicine and Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences will promote clinical innovation through translational research.

Spartanburg's Village-at-Pelham Hospital Nears Completion

Spartanburg Regional Hospital will open the $60 million Village-at-Pelham Hospital in Greer, S.C., on October 8, 2008. The 48-bed facility can be expanded to a total of 500 beds and will feature a patient tracking board for family members, an emergency department, spacious patient rooms, and wireless Internet. Additional facilities planned for the Village-at-Pelham campus include a cancer center, a second medical office building, and a research facility.

Sinai Hospital Opens Inpatient Neuroscience Facility

Sinai Hospital opened the $5.4 million LifeBridge Health Brain & Spine Institute in Baltimore in May of 2008. The 6,700-sf inpatient neuroscience facility houses diagnostic treatment, imaging, and surgery. The project team included architect Hord Coplan Macht, contractor Whiting-Turner Construction, and interior designer HDR.

Washington County Health System Builds Hagerstown Hospital

Washington County Health System broke ground in spring of 2008 on a 511,000-sf hospital in Hagerstown, Md.  Sited adjacent to Robinwood Medical Center, the facility will be comprised of three towers and is slated for completion in November of 2010. The $294 million hospital will include 297 private patient rooms, 53 emergency treatment rooms, 17 operating rooms, two cardiac rooms, and two trauma rooms.

Group Health Opens Bellevue Medical Center

Group Health opened the 190,000-sf Bellevue Medical Center on July 1, 2008. Located in Bellevue, Wash., the four-story outpatient facility was designed by Ellerbe Becket of Minneapolis and includes 136 patient care rooms and seven operating rooms with ceiling booms for equipment. Bellevue Medical Center will partner with the adjacent Overlake Hospital where inpatient care will be provided to patients who require an overnight stay.

Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center opened its 1,050,000-sf replacement hospital in Los Angeles on June 29, 2008. Constructed to rigorous seismic standards, the 10-story academic medical center was designed by Pei Partnership Architects with Perkins+Will as executive architect. Consultants include RBB Architects, Zakian Woo Architects, and Pickett Designs.

St. Joseph Hospital Expands in Eureka

St. Joseph Hospital has selected Skanska USA Building as the construction manager for an $118 million expansion in Eureka, Calif.  Designed by architect Kaplan McLaughlin Diaz, the project will include a 100,000-sf, three-story addition, as well as renovation of 12,000-sf in the existing hospital. The expansion is slated for completion in late 2010, upon which the renovation will commence and reach completion in late 2011.

Morehead State University Creates Center for Education, Health and Research

Morehead State University is partnering with the University of Kentucky and St. Claire Regional Medical Center to build the 92,500-sf Center for Education, Health and Research in Morehead, Ky.  Providing medical education and patient diagnosis and treatment, the $28 million facility will break ground in August of 2008 with completion slated for 2010.
