Northern Illinois University Builds Proton Treatment and Research Center

Northern Illinois University broke ground on the $160 million Proton Treatment and Research Center in West Chicago in June of 2008. Sited in the DuPage National Technology Park, the 115,000-sf cancer treatment facility will open in February of 2010. Housing research, treatment, and medical offices, the nonprofit center will treat up to 1,500 patients annually. The project team includes architect VOA Associates and developer CenterPoint Properties.

University of Iowa Health Plans Critical Care and Pediatric Expansion

University of Iowa Health Care has selected HKS Architects as the master facilities planner for the construction of a critical care tower and children’s hospital in Iowa City. The architect of record is Heery International with Stanley Beaman & Sears Architecture and Interiors of Atlanta as pediatric architect. Construction will commence in May of 2010 with completion slated for fall of 2013. The project cost is estimated at between $700 and $850 million.

Jackson South Community Hospital Expands in Miami

Jackson South Community Hospital broke ground in August of 2008 on a $102 million expansion of its Miami facility. Doubling the size of the current hospital, the project will accommodate a total of 199 beds when it opens in late 2011. A three-story, 157,000-sf building will be constructed adjacent to the existing facility, of which 72,000-sf will be renovated. The completed project will feature an expanded emergency department, 57 new private patient rooms, 12 additional critical care beds, surgery, new CT/MRI scanners, oncology, and a cardiac catheterization lab.

St. Francis Medical Center Opens Colorado Springs Hospital

St. Francis Health Services opened the 350,000-sf St. Francis Medical Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., on Aug. 16, 2008. The full service hospital includes a critical care unit, emergency room, women’s health, birthing center, neonatal ICU, and a Flight for Life hangar. The 156-bed facility has a Level 4 trauma designation and can expand from four to twelve critical care beds as needed.

Good Samaritan Builds LEED-Certified MultiCare Hospital

Good Samaritan Hospital's MultiCare facility in Puyallup, Wash., is slated for completion in late 2010. LEED Silver certification for sustainable design will be sought for the 353,000-sf inpatient facility. Designed by Clark/Kjos Architects and Giffin Bolte Jurgens Architects, the patient care tower will include 80 private patient rooms, emergency, imaging, and surgery.

ProHealth Constructs Waukesha Memorial Hospital-Mukwonago

ProHealth will initiate construction in 2009 on a 56-bed hospital adjacent to its outpatient facility in Mukwonago, Wis. Slated for completion within two years, Waukesha Memorial Hospital-Mukwonago will be comprised of a three-story inpatient tower with emergency department, eight-bed ICU, surgery, and a cardiac catheterization laboratory. Project cost is estimated at between $75 million and $90 million.

Rice University Constructs Collaborative Research Center

Rice University is constructing the Collaborative Research Center in Houston. The 477,000-gsf project broke ground in December of 2006 and is slated for completion in early spring of 2009. Sited on 2.9 acres, the ten-story facility will accommodate bioscience and biotechnology research. The estimated construction cost of the LEED-certified facility is between $200 million and $300 million.

West Virginia University Dedicates Biomedical Research Center

West Virginia University dedicated the $43 million Biomedical Research Center and the $17.5 million Health Sciences Learning Center in Morgantown in August of 2008. The four-story, 120,000-sf Biomedical Research Center houses the Multiple Sclerosis and Neurodegenerative Diseases Research Center, the Sensory Neurosciences Research Center, and other biomedical research facilities.

Children's Hospital of Orange County Builds Patient Tower

Children's Hospital of Orange County has selected Jacobs Engineering Group as construction manager for its new 424,300-sf patient tower in Orange, Calif. The tower will be constructed in phases through 2020 for a total future bed count of 380. The project will include renovation of the existing hospital campus and central plant.

Department of Energy Launches EnergySmart Hospitals Initiative

The U.S. Department of Energy announced the launch of the EnergySmart Hospitals initiative in July of 2008. Aiming to increase the use of energy efficient technologies in hospitals across the United States, EnergySmart Hospitals will target a 20 percent improved efficiency in existing hospital facilities and 30 percent improvement over current standards in new construction. The initiative has the potential to help hospitals identify opportunities to not only save millions in potential energy costs, but also reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

Kaiser Permanente Builds Vallejo Medical Center

Kaiser Permanente is constructing a 460,000-sf replacement hospital in Vallejo, Calif. Slated for completion in fall of 2009, the $500 million facility will house 248 beds, emergency, radiology, surgery, ICU, rehabilitation, and inpatient care. The sustainably designed facility will feature UV-filtered natural light, flooring made of recyclable rubber, and heat recovery. The hospital will meet new state seismic regulations.

Southeast Missouri Hospital Plans Regional Cancer Center

Southeast Missouri Hospital will break ground in late 2008 on the $33 million Regional Cancer Center in Cape Girardeau. The 49,200-sf facility will house two linear accelerators, internal radiation therapy, MRI, pharmacy, on-site lab, and physician offices. Occupancy is slated for December of 2010. The project architect is Pansing, Nolan and Matlock of Webster Groves, Mo.

St. Mary's Health Center has selected a partnership of HGA and The Lawrence Group to design its new $200 million hospital in Jefferson City, Mo. Featuring 167 private patient rooms, the project will begin construction in 2010 with completion expected in fall of 2012.

University of Tennessee Medical Center broke ground in July of 2008 on a $26 million heart hospital in Knoxville. Slated for completion in 2010, the four-story facility will house inpatient care including a 24-bed cardiovascular ICU for the Heart Lung Vascular Institute.
