Geisinger Medical Center opens Hospital for Advanced Medicine

Geisinger Medical Center will open the $100 million Hospital for Advanced Medicine in February of 2010 in Danville, Pa. The 308,000-sf facility houses the Heart and Vascular Institute and includes a 32,000-sf surgical suite with four operating rooms, two inpatient nursing units, and physician offices. Ground was broken on the nine-story hospital in June of 2007. The facility was designed by Ewing Cole and built by Torcon Inc. LEED sustainable design certification will be sought for the project.

Danbury Hospital Plans Expansion

Danbury Hospital will begin construction in 2010 on a $140 million expansion of the Tower Building in Danbury, Conn. Housing a new emergency department, ICU and critical care facilities, and a medical/surgical floor, the project is slated for completion in 2014.

Parkland Memorial Hospital will begin construction in November of 2010 on a $1.27 billion replacement facility in Dallas. The 1.9 million-sf project is being designed by HDR of Omaha and Corgan Associates of Dallas. The construction management team includes Balfour Beatty Construction, Austin Commercial, H.J. Russell & Co., Azteca Enterprises, and CH2M Hill Enterprise Management Solutions.

New York Presbyterian Hospital and Columbia University Open Milstein Family Heart Center

New York Presbyterian Hospital and Columbia University Medical Center celebrated the opening of the Vivian and Seymour Milstein Family Heart Center in New York in January of 2010. Designed by Pei Cobb Freed and daSILVA Architects, the six-story, 142,000-sf building will provide comprehensive cardiac care with advanced technologies for diagnosis and treatment. The facility was made possible by a $50 million gift from the Vivian and Seymour Milstein family.

San Diego County opened its $85 million Medical Examiner and Forensic Center in San Diego in January of 2010. The 84,000-sf facility houses a morgue, 17 technology-rich autopsy rooms, histology and toxicology labs, conference rooms, and advanced imaging suites.

Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital broke ground in January of 2010 on the $200 million Plaza Tower in Whittier, Calif. The six-story, 237,750-sf facility is slated for completion in 2012. Complying with new state seismic regulations, the building will feature 11 technology-rich surgical suites. The general contractor for the project is Millie and Severson of Los Alamitos, Calif.

Lee County VA Breaks Ground on Outpatient Clinic

Lee County VA broke ground in January of 2010 on its 224,000-sf Outpatient Clinic in Tampa, Fla. HOK provided master planning, programming, and architectural design services for the project, which is comprised of ambulatory surgery and diagnostic support facilities. The patient-focused center will provide comprehensive, multidisciplinary specialty care and treatment.

Nationwide Children's Hospital Breaks Ground on Research Facility

Nationwide Children’s Hospital will break ground in early 2010 on its third research facility in Columbus, Ohio. Part of an $840 million expansion plan, the $93 million Research III building will be constructed adjacent to the existing Wexner Institute for Pediatric Research and Research II. The six-story, 225,000-sf facility is slated for completion in 2012. LEED sustainable design certification will be sought for the project.

St. Vincent Health System Builds St. Clair Hospital

St. Vincent Health System has selected a partnership of Hoar Construction and Goodgame Co. to build the $31.4 million St. Clair Hospital in Pell City, Ala. The 76,000-sf replacement facility will include surgical suites, an emergency department, 40 inpatient beds, and outpatient services. Construction of the two-story hospital will begin in summer of 2010 and reach completion in late summer of 2011. A 45,000-sf medical office building will also be built at the site.

St. Joseph's Hospital Expands Syracuse Health Center

St. Joseph’s Hospital broke ground in December of 2009 on a $220 million expansion of its health center in Syracuse, N.Y. The project includes a new emergency services building, an operating room suite, an intensive care unit, and a data center. The emergency services building will house 54 beds and a 15-bed clinical observation unit and is slated for completion in summer of 2011.

North Memorial Health Care Opens Maple Grove Hospital

North Memorial Health Care opened the 225,000-sf Maple Grove Hospital on December 30, 2009. The patient-centered facility includes a birthing center, emergency department, and five operating rooms. The hospital was built with many natural, regionally-sourced, and recycled materials. The facility features abundant natural light, occupancy sensors, and advanced HVAC systems for reduced energy consumption. Maple Grove Hospital represents a partnership between North Memorial Health Care and Fairview Health Services.

Central Texas College Builds Nursing Education Building

Central Texas College is building the $23 million Nursing Education Building in Killeen. Ground was broken on the facility in July of 2009 with completion expected in spring of 2011. The two-story, 85,000-sf project will be shared with Tarleton State University-Central Texas and Metroplex Hospital. The building will provide 19 classrooms, 69 faculty offices, and eight medical simulation labs.

University of Alabama Hospital Completes Women and Infants Center

University of Alabama Hospital will open the $164 million Women and Infants Center in Birmingham in February of 2010. Consolidating obstetrics and women’s services, the 430,000-sf facility will house the nation’s largest private-room neonatal nursery. The center features family lounges, a wireless communication system, and an emergency labor and delivery suite. The facility connects on three levels to UAB’s North Pavilion and will also connect to the new Children’s Hospital.

Surrey Memorial Hospital Plans Emergency and Critical Care Expansion

Surrey Memorial Hospital is planning to construct a new critical care tower and emergency department in Surrey, British Columbia. The estimated cost of the project is between $500 and $600 million. The facility will also house academic space and a perinatal center. A design-build team will be selected in 2010.
