Campus Biometropolis Planned in Mexico City

The Campus Biometropolis development will be constructed in Mexico City. Designed by Foster + Partners, the 71 hectare medical city will include research, instructional, and healthcare facilities. The mixed-use project will contain a hospital, laboratories, offices, a conference center, a hotel, shops, and apartments. The campus will accommodate companies focused on six key areas of medicine: cancer, cardiovascular, infectious diseases, pharmaceuticals, nutrition, and geriatrics.

Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Builds Colket Translational Research Building

Children's Hospital of Philadelphia is building the $496 million Colket Translational Research Building on its South Campus. Slated for completion in 2010, the 450,000-sf, eleven-story facility will include four laboratory floors, administrative offices, a cafeteria, conference space, and a two-story lobby. Four below-grade floors will house infrastructure, laboratory support, and a central utility plant. Office floors are designed for ease of conversion to laboratory space, and the building is constructed to expand vertically to 23 stories to accommodate future growth.

The four-level patient tower features a patient-centered design and next-generation advancements in healthcare technology and seismic building safety. Designed by RBB Architects of Los Angeles, the new Patient Care Tower features private rooms and an expanded family area.

Texas A&M Health Science Center Opens Round Rock Facility

Construction began on the 134,000-sf medical education building in August of 2008. Supporting clinical teaching, the facility features a simulation center with computerized manikins, administrative offices, clinical research space, and an outpatient clinic.

The University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine celebrated the completion of the $140 million Roberts Proton Therapy Center in December of 2009. Designed by Tsoi/Kobus & Associates, the 75,000-sf facility is located primarily in an underground building connected to the Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine. The Roberts Proton Therapy Center is fully integrated with the Abraham Cancer Center and is the largest proton therapy facility associated with an academic medical center.

The $355 million medical center provides 254 private inpatient rooms and 69 outpatient beds. The $185 million facility provides 236 private inpatient rooms with individual temperature controls and touch-screen monitors for patient documentation. Designed by The Estopinal Group and built by contractor Garmong Pepper, the four-story medical center includes an emergency department, surgical suites, diagnostic imaging, critical care, and a helipad.

Texoma Medical Center opened its $137 million replacement hospital in Denison, Texas, in December of 2009. Designed by HKS of Dallas and built by Brasfield and Gorrie, the eight-story, 370,000-gsf facility provides 252 beds. The hospital includes a 32-bed intensive care unit, a 26-bed emergency room, and a 12-room operating suite.

Construction began on the facility in 2006.

Highland Hospital Plans Replacement Facilities

Highland Hospital is planning a $431 million project to replace facilities in Oakland, Calif. The design-build project will be completed in three phases over seven years. The first phase is comprised of a three-story, 78,000-sf medical office building. The second phase includes construction of a nine-story, 169-bed acute care tower. Phase three will involve demolition of Highland’s existing tower and creation of a courtyard and connecting structures.
