The University of Louisville opened the 300,000-sf Clinical and Translational Research Building in October of 2009. Located on the university's health sciences campus in downtown Louisville, the $143.1 million project was designed by Arrasmith, Judd, Rapp, Chovan of Louisville and SmithGroup of Detroit with Messer Construction of Cincinnati as general contractor. Ground was broken for the facility in February of 2006.
Grifols broke ground on a 72,000-sf plasma research and testing facility in San Marcos, Texas, in October of 2009. Located in the River Ridge Business Park, the biomedical facility is slated for completion in 2010. Additional warehouse and production facilities will reach completion in 2012 and 2013. Based in Spain, Grifols is involved in the research, development, and manufacturing of plasma therapies, diagnostic systems, and medical devices.
The University of Washington broke ground on a $78 million molecular engineering building in Seattle in October of 2009. Designed by Zimmer Gunsul Frasca with Research Facilities Design (RFD) as lab design consultant, the 90,000-sf building will feature a low-vibration basement research facility, flexible laboratories, and classrooms. The building will be constructed to attain a minimum of LEED Silver sustainable design certification.
The University of Florida is planning to construct the $61 million Academic and Research Center in the Lake Nona biomedical district in Orlando. The four-story, 115,000-sf facility will house the Comprehensive Drug Development Center; the UF College of Pharmacy doctoral program, and biomedical research laboratories. Designed to foster collaboration with the adjacent Burnham Institute for Medical Research, the Academic and Research Center will support accelerated development of medical treatments through translational research.
Utah State University is building a $60 million life science research facility in North Logan. Construction began on the 110,000-sf project in November of 2008 with completion expected in early 2011. Developed in partnership with Utah Science, Technology and Research (USTAR), the building will house a nanofabrication facility, vivarium, research laboratories, offices, and incubator space.
Hastings College dedicated the $12 million Morrison Reeves Science Center in October of 2009 in Hastings, Neb. The 55,000-sf facility houses teaching labs, research labs, and classrooms for instruction in biology, chemistry, physics, and psychology. Construction began on the sustainably designed science center in mid-2007.
The University of Rhode Island broke ground in October of 2009 on a 148,000-sf facility for the College of Pharmacy in Kingston. Housing leading edge teaching and research labs and business incubator space, the $75 million facility will support programs in pharmaceutics manufacturing, pharmacognosy, 3D visualization, and histology. The building will include lecture halls, classrooms, a patient clinic, tissue culture, and a 3D visualization auditorium.
The National Cancer Institute will begin construction in fall of 2009 on the $200 million Advanced Technology Research Facility in Frederick, Md. Located in the Riverside Research Park, the 330,000-sf office and laboratory project is slated for completion by mid-2011. The National Cancer Institute is managed by the U.S. National Institutes of Health.
Purdue University dedicated the $33 million Wayne T. and Mary T. Hockmeyer Hall of Structural Biology in October of 2009 in West Lafayette, Ind. The 65,690-sf facility will enable researchers to develop innovative vaccines and disease treatments. Housing the Markey Center for Structural Biology, the building includes eight specialized labs, eight general labs, offices, and conference rooms. The facility provides suites for NMR spectroscopy, electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction, as well as a biocontainment laboratory.
The University of Western Ontario opened the $22 million Claudette MacKay-Lassonde Pavilion in London, Ontario, in October of 2009. Housing the department of engineering, the 45,000-sf teaching and research facility will support the development of sustainable technologies and materials. The project features a green roof, a wind turbine, and solar panels. LEED Gold sustainable design certification will be sought for the facility.
Butler University dedicated its $14 million pharmacy and health sciences addition in Indianapolis in October of 2009. The sustainably designed 40,000-sf facility houses classrooms, lecture halls, project rooms, faculty offices, and teaching and research labs. LEED Silver certification will be sought for the project, which features waterless urinals, natural lighting, and heat recovery. The duration of construction was approximately one year.
Marquette University will break ground in spring of 2010 on a $100 million engineering building in Milwaukee. The first phase of construction will create a five-story, 100,000-sf facility housing classrooms and teaching and research laboratories. Occupancy is expected in August of 2011. The project team includes Opus North Corp. as design-builder, Opus Architects & Engineers as architect of record, and HGA as design consultant.
The National University of Ireland, Galway broke ground on a €40 million engineering facility in October of 2009. The four-story, 14,000-sm building will include classrooms, lecture halls, faculty offices, and 36 laboratories. Completion is expected in early 2011.
Community Tissue Services initiated construction in October of 2009 on a $40 million tissue processing and R&D facility in Kettering, Ohio. Sited in the Miami Valley Research Park, the 90,000-sf project is slated for completion in 2011. The facility was designed by John Poe Architects of Dayton and will house manufacturing, distribution, and research space.
Ground was broken on the $40.1 million Robert H.N. Ho Research Centre at Vancouver General Hospital in September of 2009. Providing translational research facilities for the University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine, the 69,350-sf building will house the Centre for Hip Health and Mobility; the OvCaRe Ovarian Cancer Research program, and an expansion of the Vancouver Prostate Centre. Completion is expected in spring of 2011.
