Research and Development

The University of Rhode Island broke ground in October of 2009 on a 148,000-sf facility for the College of Pharmacy in Kingston. Housing leading edge teaching and research labs and business incubator space, the $75 million facility will support programs in pharmaceutics manufacturing, pharmacognosy, 3D visualization, and histology. The building will include lecture halls, classrooms, a patient clinic, tissue culture, and a 3D visualization auditorium.

The National Cancer Institute will begin construction in fall of 2009 on the $200 million Advanced Technology Research Facility in Frederick, Md. Located in the Riverside Research Park, the 330,000-sf office and laboratory project is slated for completion by mid-2011. The National Cancer Institute is managed by the U.S. National Institutes of Health.

Purdue University dedicated the $33 million Wayne T. and Mary T. Hockmeyer Hall of Structural Biology in October of 2009 in West Lafayette, Ind. The 65,690-sf facility will enable researchers to develop innovative vaccines and disease treatments. Housing the Markey Center for Structural Biology, the building includes eight specialized labs, eight general labs, offices, and conference rooms. The facility provides suites for NMR spectroscopy, electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction, as well as a biocontainment laboratory.

The University of Western Ontario opened the $22 million Claudette MacKay-Lassonde Pavilion in London, Ontario, in October of 2009. Housing the department of engineering, the 45,000-sf teaching and research facility will support the development of sustainable technologies and materials. The project features a green roof, a wind turbine, and solar panels. LEED Gold sustainable design certification will be sought for the facility.

Butler University dedicated its $14 million pharmacy and health sciences addition in Indianapolis in October of 2009. The sustainably designed 40,000-sf facility houses classrooms, lecture halls, project rooms, faculty offices, and teaching and research labs. LEED Silver certification will be sought for the project, which features waterless urinals, natural lighting, and heat recovery. The duration of construction was approximately one year.

Marquette University will break ground in spring of 2010 on a $100 million engineering building in Milwaukee. The first phase of construction will create a five-story, 100,000-sf facility housing classrooms and teaching and research laboratories. Occupancy is expected in August of 2011. The project team includes Opus North Corp. as design-builder, Opus Architects & Engineers as architect of record, and HGA as design consultant.

The National University of Ireland, Galway broke ground on a €40 million engineering facility in October of 2009. The four-story, 14,000-sm building will include classrooms, lecture halls, faculty offices, and 36 laboratories. Completion is expected in early 2011.

Community Tissue Services initiated construction in October of 2009 on a $40 million tissue processing and R&D facility in Kettering, Ohio. Sited in the Miami Valley Research Park, the 90,000-sf project is slated for completion in 2011. The facility was designed by John Poe Architects of Dayton and will house manufacturing, distribution, and research space.

Ground was broken on the $40.1 million Robert H.N. Ho Research Centre at Vancouver General Hospital in September of 2009. Providing translational research facilities for the University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine, the 69,350-sf building will house the Centre for Hip Health and Mobility; the OvCaRe Ovarian Cancer Research program, and an expansion of the Vancouver Prostate Centre. Completion is expected in spring of 2011.

The University of Washington received $126 million in federal stimulus funding in September of 2009 to construct an advanced ocean observatory on the Pacific Northwest coast. Part of the National Science Foundation's Ocean Observatories Initiative, the Regional Scale Nodes and the Center for Environmental Visualization will include an extensive under-sea remote sensing network to provide researchers with real-time data about ocean events. The network will support research in geology, marine biology, seismology, and climate change.

Duke-National University of Singapore (Duke-NUS) dedicated the Khoo Teck Puat Building in Singapore on September 28, 2009. The facility provides a world-class environment for medical education and research in the areas of emerging infectious diseases, cancer and stem cell biology, neuroscience and behavioral disorders, cardiovascular and metabolic disorders, and health services and systems research.

The University of Waterloo broke ground on the $36 million Engineering VI Building in September of 2009. The five-story, 113,000-sf facility will house research labs, classrooms, and administrative space for the department of chemical engineering. Completion is expected in March of 2011.

Buffalo State College broke ground on the  $110 million Science and Mathematics Complex in September of 2009. The two-phase project includes renovation of an existing facility and construction of a 96,000-sf addition housing teaching and research labs, offices, and instrumentation space. The completed facility will also include an atrium, an imaging suite, a planetarium, and greenhouses. The Science and Mathematics Complex will house the departments of biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and earth sciences.

Washington University in St. Louis (WUSTL) officially opened the $8 million Nano Research Facility and Center for Materials Innovation in September of 2009. Part of the National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network, the facility includes four laboratories: a micro and nano-fabrication lab, a surface characterization lab, a particle technology lab, and a bio-imaging lab. The fabrication lab features Class 100, Class 1,000, and Class 10,000 cleanrooms.

Utah State University opened two research facilities in Logan in September of 2009. The 11,000-sf Hydraulics Modeling Laboratory will enable engineers to build large-scale replicas of dams and spillways for channel hydraulics modeling projects. As a re-circulating facility, the laboratory can provide a flow of nearly 50,000 gallons per minute. The 5,000-sf Structural Testing Laboratory will enable researchers to test the load strength of construction materials for the Long-Term Bridge Performance Program, a national study on bridge safety.
