Arizona State University Builds College of Law

Arizona State University is building the $129 million Arizona Center for Law and Society in Tempe. Housing the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law, the 280,000-gsf facility will provide advanced classrooms and simulation suites, the Ross-Blakley Law Library, and several public policy and outreach centers. The project was designed by Ennead Architects of New York City and Jones Studio of Phoenix. The facility is being built by DPR Construction with BuroHappold as engineering consultant.

Qatar University Plans BSL-3 Select Agent Laboratory

Qatar University has selected WorkingBuildings of Atlanta to design, build, and provide operational support for the new BSL-3 Select Agent Laboratory in Doha, Qatar. Located at the New Research Complex, the facility will support the study of emerging infectious diseases and other biological threats. The laboratory will enable rapid response to regional public health issues as well as accommodating investigations involving biological or chemical terrorism.

University of California, Los Angeles Constructs Engineering VI

The University of California, Los Angeles is constructing the $130 million Engineering VI building for the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science. The six-story, 150,000-sf project was designed by BNIM and Moore Ruble Yudell with Research Facilities Design (RFD) as laboratory design consultant. The multidisciplinary facility will provide temperature-stabilized, low-vibration, and low-electromagnetic environments for the development of advanced energy technologies.

University of Strathclyde's Technology and Innovation Centre Nears Completion

The University of Strathclyde will open the $138 million Technology and Innovation Centre (TIC) in Glasgow in March of 2015. The nine-story, 269,000-sf building will provide 100 laboratories, two auditoriums, offices, and a central atrium. The facility will house the Fraunhofer Centre for Applied Photonics as well as five test cells on the basement level for the study of high-intensity radiation.

Oklahoma State University Expands College of Human Sciences

Oklahoma State University is expanding the College of Human Sciences in Stillwater, Okla. Ground was broken in October of 2014 on a 76,706-sf wing that will provide research, teaching, and administrative space. The expansion was designed by LWPB Architecture in association with DLR Group to support experiential learning and collaboration. The building will provide 27,000 sf of lab space, virtual and augmented reality suites, and a central atrium with abundant natural light. Completion is expected in fall of 2016.

University of Houston Builds Multidisciplinary Research and Engineering Building

The University of Houston is constructing the $51 million Multidisciplinary Research and Engineering Building. Housing shared core facilities for multiple departments, the four-story, 120,000-gsf project will provide the Cullen College of Engineering with wet research labs, a visualization suite, a high performance computational center, and an NMR spectrometer lab. Ground was broken in October of 2014 and occupancy is slated for fall of 2016.

College of William & Mary Constructs Integrated Science Center Phase Three

The College of William & Mary is building the third phase of the Integrated Science Center (ISC) in Williamsburg, Va. Supporting programs in applied science, biology, chemistry, psychology, and computer modeling, the $78 million ISC 3 will feature core labs with advanced instrumentation and a 300-seat lecture hall. Designed by EYP Architecture & Engineering, the four-story, 113,000-sf project will include construction of a rooftop greenhouse on the adjacent ISC 2. The general contractor is Whiting-Turner.

University of Maryland Builds Engineering Facility

The University of Maryland is building a new facility for the Clark School of Engineering in College Park. Ground was broken in November of 2014 on the 184,000-sf A. James Clark Hall, a collaborative, multidisciplinary facility created to support the development of advanced biomedical technologies. Designed by Ballinger, the building will provide a new home for the Fischell Department of Bioengineering and the Robert E. Fischell Institute for Biomedical Devices.

Canisius College Builds Science Hall

Canisius College is building the interdisciplinary Science Hall in Buffalo, N.Y. The first $68 million phase was completed in August of 2012, comprising renovations to the first and lower levels of the building to create teaching labs and offices for the departments of computer science, mathematics/statistics, and physics. Construction will begin in 2016 on the next $17.8 million phase of construction, which includes fit-out of the second floor of the building for programs in anthrozoology, biology, pre-med, animal behavior, ecology, and conservation.

SUNY Polytechnic Institute Constructs ZEN Building

SUNY Polytechnic is building the $191 million Zero-Energy Nanotechnology (ZEN) building in Albany, N.Y. Designed by EYP Architecture & Engineering to support clean energy research, the 360,000-sf facility will provide labs, classrooms, offices, and a large central atrium. The building will also house the new data center for the state of New York and the headquarters of the U.S. Photovoltaic Manufacturing Consortium. CommerceHub will occupy 50,000 sf in the building.

Kent State University Plans Integrated Sciences Building

Kent State University will begin construction in fall of 2015 on the $37.6 million Integrated Sciences Building in Kent, Ohio. Designed by Ayers Saint Gross and built by Turner Construction, the 57,000-gsf facility will be physically connected to the existing Williams Hall and will include 13,500 sf of shell space on the basement level. A minimum of LEED Silver sustainable design certification will be sought for the project. Completion is expected in summer of 2017.

University of Waterloo Breaks Ground on Applied Health Sciences Building

The University of Waterloo broke ground on the $18.6 million Applied Health Sciences facility in December of 2014. Designed by IBI Group Architects, the four-story, 56,000-sf project will be constructed as an expansion of the existing B.C. Matthews Hall and the adjoining Lyle S. Hallman Institute. The addition will provide a 350-seat lecture hall and technology-rich teaching laboratories, including labs for anatomy and kinesiology. The general contractor is Melloul Blamey Construction. Occupancy is expected in fall of 2016.

University of Utah Plans Crocker Science Center

The University of Utah will renovate the existing 71,000-sf George Thomas building to create the Gary & Ann Crocker Science Center in Salt Lake City. The existing structure will be seismically upgraded and reconfigured, and a 52,500-sf addition will be built to accommodate laboratories for the Cell and Genome Research Center. The completed four-story, 123,500-sf facility will also provide lecture halls, classrooms, a café, a business incubator, and a full-height atrium. The project team includes EDA Architects and Okland Construction.

University of Cambridge Constructs Research Facility

The University of Cambridge has awarded Kier Group a $91 million contract to build a new biomedical laboratory in the United Kingdom. The project will provide up to 180,000 sf of research space and will be located on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. Site work will begin in mid-2015 with completion expected in summer of 2017.
