Bayer and UC Davis Create Crop Science CoLaborator

Bayer Crop Science is partnering with the University of California, Davis to create the CoLaborator facility in West Sacramento. Located in Bayer's Innovation Hub for Crop Science, the 3,000-sf facility will offer open, flexible facilities to support university-affiliated startups. Housing up to ten researchers, the project will provide equipment for the testing of agricultural and food-related innovations integrated with collaboration spaces for interaction with other entrepreneurs.

Texas A&M University Plans Veterinary Teaching and Research Facility

The Texas A&M University System is planning to construct the $22.8 million Veterinary Education, Research & Outreach Center at West Texas A&M University in Canyon. Strategically sited adjacent to the new Agricultural Sciences Complex and the relocated Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Lab, the facility will accommodate programs for two Texas A&M campuses, Canyon and College Station. The VERO Center will offer classrooms, labs, and livestock facilities for experiential animal sciences education and training. Completion is expected in 2020.

Seneca College Builds Centre for Innovation, Technology and Entrepreneurship

Seneca College is constructing the CAD$85 million Centre for Innovation, Technology and Entrepreneurship in North York, Ontario. Designed by Perkins+Will, the five-story, 274,000-sf building will offer integrated facilities for applied research and commercialization, specialized training, and business incubation. Supporting the development of industry partnerships, the project will provide collaborative laboratories, maker spaces, instrumentation suites, classrooms, and a large atrium and event space.

University of Maine Plans Engineering Education and Design Center

The University of Maine is planning to build the $80 million Engineering Education and Design Center in Orono. Designed by Ellenzweig and WBRC Architects and Engineers, the 120,000-sf teaching and research building will provide classrooms and labs for experiential, team-based learning. Supporting the expansion of UMaine's engineering program, the facility will feature capstone project rooms for multidisciplinary student collaboration. Construction could begin in late 2019 with completion expected in 2022.

Purdue University Dedicates Animal Sciences Complex

Purdue University dedicated its $60 million, 122,462-sf animal sciences complex in March of 2018 in West Lafayette, Ind. Ground was broken in November of 2015 on the project, which includes the Hobart and Russell Creighton Hall of Animal Sciences, the Land O' Lakes Center for Experiential Learning, and the Purina Pavilion.

Supporting multidisciplinary science programs, the 387,500-sf building will provide flexible teaching and research labs, academic classrooms, meeting rooms, gathering areas, and a central atrium. Designed to foster entrepreneurship and the commercialization of research discoveries, the facility will include incubator space for industry partners as well as a community education venue offering interactive science displays.

Designed by Gensler to promote collaboration, the 126,000-sf leased facility features open offices and meeting areas arranged in neighborhoods to foster interaction. The project will support Accenture's technology, digital business, and consulting operations, and is one of ten innovation hubs that the company will open nationwide by late 2020.

Designed by Perkins+Will, the three-story, 76,000-sf academic facility will offer innovative learning spaces, offices, a comprehensive student services hub, gathering and event areas, and a community counseling center. The campus will enable Tarleton to engage in collaborative workforce development initiatives with industry partners to promote economic growth in North Texas.

Fraunhofer Opens Project Centre for Biomedical Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing

Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology opened the Project Centre for Biomedical Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing (BEAM) in March of 2018 in Hamilton, Ontario. Located in the McMaster Innovation Park, the $33 million project involved the renovation and fit-out of an existing warehouse to create a 20,000-sf innovation center offering research, office, and manufacturing space. An additional 20,000 sf on the second floor will house laboratories and offices in the future.

University of Tennessee Plans Knoxville Engineering Building

The University of Tennessee will break ground in fall of 2018 on a $129 million engineering building in Knoxville. Designed by McCarty Holsaple McCarty with SmithGroupJJR as laboratory planner, the facility will comprise a central structure with two wings of up to five stories. The 228,000-sf project will provide flexible classrooms and research labs, maker spaces, project rooms, informal interaction areas, an atrium, and dedicated space for the department of nuclear engineering.

Wexford Partners with Arizona State University on Phoenix Research Building

Wexford Science & Technology is partnering with Arizona State University to create a 200,000-sf research building in Phoenix. Representing an expansion of the Phoenix Biomedical Campus, the seven-story building will be owned by Wexford, with ASU investing $40 million in the first phase of development and leasing approximately half of the structure. The remaining research space will be occupied by private companies and industry partners. Completion is expected in 2019.

UC San Diego Health opened the $140 million Koman Family Outpatient Pavilion in March of 2018 in La Jolla. The 156,000-sf facility offers integrated translational medicine and clinical care in a single location, with multidisciplinary teams of specialists and comprehensive patient services collocated to support every phase of treatment. Designed by CO Architects, the pavilion houses eight surgical suites, basic and advanced imaging technologies, infusion and apheresis services, and the Sanford Stem Cell Clinical Center.

Texas A&M University System Breaks Ground on RELLIS Academic Building

The Texas A&M University System broke ground in March of 2018 on a $42 million academic building in Bryan, Texas. Located on the RELLIS campus, the three-story, 68,000-sf facility will provide ten classrooms, over 40 faculty offices, collaboration and group learning spaces, and teaching labs for allied health and upper-division science courses. Completion is expected in June of 2019. The project is part of the planned 112,460-sf RELLIS Academic Complex which will accommodate 2,500 students upon completion.
