Mass Innovation Labs Signs Ground Lease at Innovation Square Seaport

Mass Innovation Labs, a provider of life science research space solutions, signed a ground lease in December of 2017 for 54,0000 sf at Innovation Square Seaport (iSQ) in Boston. Located in the Raymond L. Flynn Marine Park, the 375,000-sf iSQ campus is being built by Related Beal, a real estate developer, owner, and operator. Mass Innovation Labs will anchor the first two floors of the multi-tenant facility, which will include coworking spaces and a collaboration center.

Michigan State University Constructs Business Pavilion

Michigan State University is constructing the $60 million Business Pavilion in East Lansing. Accommodating programs for the Eli Broad College of Business, the three-story, 100,000-sf facility will feature flexible classrooms, teaching labs, a glass-walled atrium, and an expanded career center to serve students, recruiters, and corporate partners. With teaching and learning spaces designed to support a new curriculum, the project will create an academic ecosystem that uses technology and collaborative spaces to train future business leaders.

University of Cambridge Designs Cavendish III Laboratory

The University of Cambridge is planning to construct the £300 million Cavendish III Laboratory in the United Kingdom. Designed by Jestico + Whiles with Ramboll as engineering consultant, the facility will provide the department of physics with advanced research facilities including cleanrooms, cryostat halls, microscopy suites, and laser and optical labs. A basement level with sophisticated vibration mitigation technologies will accommodate sensitive instrumentation.

D'Youville College Plans Health Professions Hub

D'Youville College is planning to build a $20 million health professions hub in Buffalo, N.Y. The three-story, 46,000-sf facility will provide a community clinic, classrooms, a virtual learning center, conference rooms, and a two-story, 200-seat amphitheater. Supporting the delivery of interdisciplinary, team-based care, the project will be the first clinic in the nation to include all the health professions in a single location.

University of Northern Colorado Builds Campus Commons

The University of Northern Colorado is building the $73.6 million Campus Commons in Greeley. Providing offices for student services and space for UNC's world-class arts programs, the collaborative 114,000-sf facility will include a 600-seat performance hall, a 400-seat multiuse auditorium, an art gallery, a ticketing office, and a café. Ground was broken on the project in fall of 2016 and completion is expected in fall of 2018. LEED Gold sustainable design certification will be sought for the facility.

Cal State San Bernardino Breaks Ground on Center for Global Innovation

California State University, San Bernardino broke ground on the $55 million Center for Global Innovation building in December of 2017. Serving as the core campus centerpiece, the three-story, 71,000-sf facility will feature 24 collaborative learning classrooms, reconfigurable multipurpose rooms, and casual study lounges.

Purdue University Plans STEM Teaching Lab Building

Purdue University is planning to construct a $64 million teaching lab building to support STEM programs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Accommodating undergraduate chemistry and biology courses, the 111,000-gsf facility will promote interdisciplinary collaboration and integration. Construction is expected to begin in September of 2018 with completion in August of 2020.

The University of Kansas is constructing the Integrated Sciences Building in Lawrence. Designed by Perkins+Will to maximize undergraduate engagement with faculty and researchers, the 280,000-sf interdisciplinary facility will provide active learning classrooms, teaching labs, and flexible research labs for programs in chemistry, medicinal chemistry, physics, and molecular biosciences. Utilizing internal and external glass to put science on display, the project will include an auditorium, core imaging labs, cleanroom suites, and collaboration spaces.

University of Washington Builds Gates Center for Computer Science & Engineering

The University of Washington is constructing the $110 million Gates Center for Computer Science & Engineering in Seattle. Designed by LMN Architects to foster interaction and collaboration, the 135,000-sf facility will feature a 3,000-sf robotics lab, a 250-seat auditorium, a maker space, an undergraduate commons, and a wet lab. The building will also house capstone project rooms, teaching labs, classrooms, faculty offices, and a flexible event hall.

University at Buffalo Opens Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences

The University at Buffalo opened the $375 million Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences in December of 2017 on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus. Designed by HOK, the collaborative 628,000-sf complex offers active learning environments, a surgical robotics center, simulation training suites, a gross anatomy lab, administrative and departmental offices, and 150,000 sf of flexible, multidisciplinary laboratories.

Georgia Tech Creates Library Next

Georgia Tech is engaged in a renewal of Prince Gilbert Library in Atlanta. Designed by Praxis 3 to provide sophisticated physical and digital spaces for students, faculty, and staff, the Library Next project includes a new connection between the two existing buildings as well as the creation of flexible workspaces, reading rooms, collaboration areas, conference spaces, and technology labs for audio, video, computing, and visualization activities. Ground was broken on the project in summer of 2016 and completion is expected in early 2020.

Harvard University Creates Enterprise Research Campus and SEAS Complex

Harvard University is planning to develop the 900,000-sf Enterprise Research Campus in the Allston district of Boston. The 36-acre project will provide teaching, research, and residential facilities in a mixed-use setting that will include business incubators, space for private companies and nonprofits, and public green areas. The first phase of development will create 400,000 sf of office and lab space, 250,000 sf of rental housing, and 250,000 sf of conference and hotel space on a 14-acre site.

Carleton University will begin construction in 2018 on a $48 million facility for the Sprott School of Business in Ottawa. Designed by Hariri Pontarini Architects, the six-story, 100,000-sf Nicol Building will feature flexible learning environments, collaboration spaces, conference rooms, and a dedicated venture accelerator for the Carleton Entrepreneurs. The technology-rich facility will accommodate executive and management training programs for business leaders as well as offering a variety of event and meeting venues.
