Emory University opened the $313 million Health Science Research Building II in March of 2023 in Atlanta. Designed by HOK, the 350,000-sf facility provides world-class research environments for a range of specialties including biomedical engineering, cardiovascular medicine, oncology, inflammation, immunology, and emerging infections. Comprising six stories above ground and two levels below, the highly collaborative structure can accommodate over 1,000 researchers, including 130 principal investigators, as well as serving as a training ground for the next generation of clinicians and scientists.
Catalyzing medical discoveries that will transform patient care, the multidisciplinary project includes biocontainment labs, a business accelerator, a biorepository, and core facilities for flow cytometry, genomics, and advanced imaging. A soaring light-filled atrium with a five-story green wall offers a range of settings for formal and informal interaction. Slated to achieve LEED Gold certification, the sustainably designed facility features a geothermal well, automated shading technologies, occupancy sensors, photovoltaic arrays, and a green roof plaza. JE Dunn was the construction manager for the development, which broke ground in December of 2019.
