The University of Kentucky (UK) has unveiled the design for the $450-million Albert B. Chandler Hospital. Slated for completion in 2010, the new one million-sf hospital will be built by Turner Construction Company in two phases to allow for a step-by-step replacement of the existing hospital.
San Juan Regional Medical Center opened its new East Tower in Farmington, N.M., on August 17, 2006. Modeled after design concepts found in hotels and resorts, the facility is the largest part of an $80-million expansion and renovation project. The design and engineering work for the tower cost approximately $10 million. The expansion features 72 large private patient rooms, eight operating suites, elevators, day surgery rooms, a new recovery room, and a healing garden.
The Commonwealth of Virginia is constructing the 96,568-sf Virginia Center for Behavioral Rehabilitation (VCBR) in Burkeville. Built by Gilbane Development Company under a turnkey approach for the Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse Services, the 100-bed VCBR will be the first of its kind in Virginia. A planned expansion will bring an additional 200 beds.
Ohio State University (OSU) is constructing the $151-million Biomedical Research Tower on its Columbus campus. The 400,000-sf, 14-story building will be the largest research facility on campus with 180,000 sf of laboratory space. Slated for completion in late fall of 2006, the tower will house labs for biomedical research, core labs for shared use, faculty and administrative offices, a 250-seat auditorium, seminar rooms, and a cafe.
West Chester Medical Center broke ground in July 2006 on its new community hospital in West Chester, Mass. The first $207-million phase includes a 370,000-sf, 160-bed hospital with surgical, outpatient, emergency, and imaging services, as well as a 90,000-sf medical office building. Both facilities are slated for completion in late 2008. The second phase includes expansion of the hospital to 300 beds and construction of a second medical office building and parking garage. The third phase would involve construction of an additional patient tower.
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has selected Cannon Design and Westlake Reed Leskosky to design a new eight-story patient tower for the Louis Stokes VA Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio. The tower will be located on the center’s Wade Park campus. The 268,000-sf facility will house the hospital’s comprehensive rehabilitation center, nursing and home care department, mental health department, and a number of other patient care programs. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2007 and reach completion in late 2009.
Children's Hospital San Diego has selected McCarthy Building Companies to perform pre-construction services for its new 279,000-sf Acute Care Pavilion in the Kearny Mesa area of San Diego. The $260-million Acute Care Pavilion is designed to house a surgical center, neonatal intensive care center, cancer center, conference centers, and 84 beds. The pavilion is planned for a 148,650-sf site at the southeast end of the Children's Hospital campus adjacent to the existing Rose Pavilion.
The State of Maryland is constructing the new State Forensic Medical Center at the University of Maryland's BioPark in Baltimore. The 120,000-sf facility will house the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and will adhere to strict biosafety laboratory criteria. The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene may occupy the remaining 26,000-sf in the six-story facility. The first level of the facility will accommodate loading and parking. The joint venture of Gaudreau Inc.
United Hospital Center (a subsidiary of West Virginia United Health System) broke ground in July of 2006 on a $285-million hospital facility in Bridgeport, Va. The 681,440-sf, seven-story facility will house 289 beds in private rooms. Completion is expected in fall of 2009. The project team includes architect Gresham, Smith and Partners of Nashville, Tenn.; civil engineer Hornor Brothers Engineers of Clarksburg, W.
The University of Miami's Miller School of Medicine is nearing completion of the $90-million Clinical Research Institute. Located at the Jackson Memorial campus in the city of Miami, the 15-story facility was designed by Perkins + Will to sustainable design criteria and vouched to be Miami's "greenest" building at present. Sustainable design features include a reflective roof, double-paned windows containing insulating gas, and under-floor air conditioning. The facility includes a 1,400-car garage and a large wellness center.
The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center has opened ts new 94,000-sf proton therapy center in Houston. The $125-million facility was constructed via a private-public partnership with investors and partners including Hitachi, Sanders Morris Harris Inc., and The Styles Co. The two-story center will be able to accommodate up to 3,500 patients annually and features one fixed-beam treatment room, three gantry treatment rooms, an experimental treatment area, a synchrotron, and beam transport system.
The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) expects to open the $850-million Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in late summer or early fall of 2007. Replacing the existing medical center, the facility will house Women's Services, Diagnosis, and Treatment, Resnick Neuropsychiatric, and Mattel Children's Hospitals.
Providence Newberg Medical Center has constructed the first LEED® Gold certified hospital in the United States. Built by Skanska USA Building, the $70 million Newberg, Ore., facility will have repaid its initial "green" investment cost in 14 months, and in just over a year, the hospital will save nearly 26 percent in annual energy expenses.
The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) celebrated the groundbreaking on June 2, 2006 of a $400-million research tower in West Philadelphia. Sited on the former Philadelphia Civic Center site, the 558,000-sf, eight-story facility will accommodate translational research and is slated for completion in spring of 2009. The project is the first phase of the larger plan for the $845-million Children's Hospital's South Campus Research Facility which will spread over nearly eight acres across from CHOP's existing facilities.
The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia broke ground in early summer of 2006 on a $400-million translational research building on the former Philadelphia Civic Center site. The eight-story, 558,000-sf facility will house four new laboratory floors, administration and conference space, two-story lobby, and a cafeteria.
