Stanford University Medical Center Awards Sodexho Facilities Management Contract

Stanford University Medical Center has awarded Sodexho’s Health Care Services Division a five year facilities management contract for plant operations and maintenance. Including 4.5 million sf of space at Stanford Hospital and Clinics, Stanford University School of Medicine, and the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, the multi-million dollar contract will also include facility infrastructure renewal projects.

St. Joseph Health System Expands Mission Hospital with Critical Care Facility

St. Joseph Health System has selected McCarthy Building Companies as the general contractor for a major addition to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo, Calif. Construction began in March 2007 on the critical care hospital addition that will allow Mission Hospital to provide the most advanced diagnostic and critical care services to its community.

Canadian Federal Government Releases 2007 Research Funding

The Canadian federal government has announced the recipients of its 2007 research budget allocations. Science and technology growth will be supported by $1.3 billion in funding, including:

  • $510 million to the Canada Foundation for Innovation 
  • $350 million to Centres of Excellence in Commercialization and Research 
  • $120 million to CANARIE to develop a next-generation research broadband network 
  • $100 million to Genome Canada 
  • $10 million to the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research

Department of Veterans Affairs Plans Lake Nona Medical Center

The Department of Veterans Affairs is planning to construct a $377.7 million medical center in the Lake Nona area of Orlando, Fla. The project includes a 134-bed hospital, a 120-bed nursing home, and an outpatient clinic. Construction is expected to begin within one year, with completion possible by 2012. The facility, which will serve veterans from ten counties, will be located adjacent to the University of Central Florida Medical School and The Burnham Institute.

Texas Medical Center Creates Campus for Inpatient Care

The Methodist Hospital System is planning an expansion of the Texas Medical Center’s inpatient care facilities. The new North Campus will include up to 700 beds in potentially 1.5 million sf of inpatient care space. Architectural firm WHR will serve as executive architect and Ellerbe Becket will provide programming and medical planning design. Kohn Pederson Fox Architects will design exterior and public spaces.

Gartnavel General Hospital Builds Leukaemia Research Centre

Gartnavel General Hospital has initiated construction on the £9.5-million Paul O’Gorman Leukaemia Research Centre in Glasgow, Scotland. The facility will feature three floors of laboratory space for blood diagnostics and treatment including hematology, hematooncology, immunology, tissue typing, and blood cancer research. The Leukaemia Research Centre is a joint project of the National Health Service for Scotland and the University of Glasgow and is located on the same site as the West of Scotland Beatson Oncology Centre.

Columbia St. Mary's Constructs Cancer Center

Columbia St. Mary’s will open the new 161,700-sf Cancer Center and Water Tower Medical Commons in Milwaukee in 2008. The project broke ground in April of 2006 and was designed by architects HOK and KahlerSlater. The six-floor Water Tower houses medical offices and will open in fall of 2007. The Cancer Center will occupy approximately 40,000 sf on the garden level and first floor of the tower. The project is sited on 22 acres that also includes the first phase of Columbia St.

Swedish Neuroscience Institute Opens Seattle Complex

The Swedish Neuroscience Institute opened its new $30-million clinical complex at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle in February of 2007. The facility includes four technology-rich operating rooms at 900,000 sf each, with four additional operating rooms in shell condition that will be developed in the future.

Providence Health System Expands Holy Cross Medical Center

Providence Health System has selected HMC Architects of San Diego to design the $143-million expansion of Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, Calif. Slated for completion in 2010, the project consists of a four-story tower addition housing a women’s services department with labor, delivery, and neonatal ICU; general acute care; surgery, recovery, and endoscopy; an intensive care unit; a chapel; and dining areas.

University of Texas, Austin Plans Dell Pediatric Research Facility

The University of Texas, Austin has selected Research Facilities Design (RFD) to provide laboratory design consulting services for the Dell Pediatric Research Institute on the former Robert Mueller Airport site. The research facility is planned to be a 150,000-gsf building with a budgeted construction cost of $55 million for shell and build-out. The project architect is HOK. Completion is slated for December 2008.

Texas Children's Hospital Plans $1.5 Billion Expansion and Renovation

Texas Children’s Hospital is planning a $1.5 billion renovation and expansion of its Houston facility. The project includes a $575-million maternity center; a $220 million children’s satellite hospital in West Houston; a $215 million comprehensive neurological research institute combining research and clinical treatment; and a $120 million expansion of the existing Feigin Center for Research. An additional $370 million will fund new equipment and information systems. Completion is slated for 2010.

Florida Atlantic University To Create New Academic Medical Center

Florida Atlantic University (FAU) is planning to construct the $400 million Charles E. Schmidt Medical Center on 38 acres of its Boca Raton campus. The new academic medical center will be created as a partnership between FAU, the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, and Boca Raton Community Hospital.

UCSF Medical Center Designs Mission Bay Hospital Complex

The University of California San Francisco Medical Center has selected architectural firm Anshen + Allen to design its $1.3-billion Mission Bay hospital complex. The first phase of the project is slated to begin construction in 2011 and reach completion in 2014. The project will include a 70-bed cancer center, a 289-bed acute care facility, a 183-bed children’s hospital, and a 36-bed women’s facility.

Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Opens Harbor Campus

Dana Farber Cancer Institute has officially opened the first phase of its new Harbor Campus in Boston’s Marine Industrial Park. Sited in 50,000 sf of leased space on two floors, the facility houses administrative, laboratory, and materials management space. A second phase, currently under construction, will house a research imaging facility with two MRIs, a PET scanner, a CT scanner, and specimen freezers. The third and final project phase will commence in late 2007 and will entail the construction of research laboratories.
