Washington University Orthopedics, in partnership with Barnes-Jewish Hospital, opened the Outpatient Orthopedic Center in Chesterfield, Mo., in late July of 2007. Designed by ACI Boland, the $13 million facility was built by general contractor Clayco. The 60,000-sf center houses examination rooms, physician offices, ambulatory surgery suites, and radiology.
Scott & White opened the University Medical Campus in Round Rock, Texas in July of 2007. The $81 million facility houses emergency, cardiac care, diagnostic imaging and testing, gynecology, pediatrics, and orthopedics. Sited on 68 acres, the facility is primarily paperless with medical records viewable electronically from any other Scott & White hospital or clinic.
Siemens Institute for Advanced Medicine is constructing a $150 million facility at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg. The project received $13.5 million in funding from the Canadian federal government in summer of 2007, for a total federal investment to date of $26.5 million. The 100,000-sf facility will house a neuroscience research department, surgery facilities, and R&D space for testing for advanced operating tools and technologies.
The $600 million McLaren Health Care Village is under construction in Clarkston, Mich. Created in collaboration with the Clarkston Medical Group, the 79-acre project will include a 135,000-sf medical office facility, a 30,000-sf cancer center, and a 15,000-sf ambulatory surgical facility in the first phase; completion is slated for year-end 2008. Phases two and three, to be completed over the next seven years, may include an inpatient hospital, three life science buildings, a cardiac center, and medical offices.
Mercy Medical Center is planning to construct a $400 million inpatient tower complex in downtown Baltimore. The 18-story, 672,000-sf tower is scheduled to break ground in spring of 2008 with completion by fall 2010. Accommodating 32 beds in private rooms per floor; the tower will also house 15 state-of-the-art operating rooms. Construction will occur in phases; phase one will include the relocation of services such as maternal child health, radiology, and space for growth at a cost of $292 million.
Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center is engaged in a $327 million expansion of its Memphis, Tenn., hospital. Nearly doubling patient care, research, and education facilities, the expansion is supported by a $5 million donation from FedEx and is slated for completion in 2011. As part of this expansion, Le Bonheur will construct the 25,000-sf FedEx Family House to provide housing for families of extended care patients. The project is comprised of 25 sleeping rooms, a small business center, a fitness and recreational center, and kitchen and dining facilities.
Sacramento-based Sutter Health has selected HGA to design a prototype for acute care facilities to serve as a template for future projects and renovations. The design will streamline project implementation, construction, and operations. The single-story prototype will be used for 60-bed and 120-bed hosptitals and will enable different configurations of key components to be built on sites of 20 acres. The template could reduce construction cost per bed from $2.5 million to a $1.5 million.
University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (UTSWMC) has selected Omniplan to provide architectural and engineering services for the fifth phase of its research Campus in Dallas. The North Campus, part of UTSWMC's 60-acre school, is divided in half by a landscaped channel that runs from east to west through the site. Phases 1-4, including two designed by Omniplan, are situated on the south side of the canal.
Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center dedicated its 1,050,000 square foot replacement hospital in Los Angeles on June 4, 2007. Constructed to rigorous seismic standards, the 10-story facility was designed by I.M. Pei and C.C. Pei of Pei Partnership Architects with Perkins+Will as executive architects. Consultants include RBB Architects, Zakian Woo Architects, and Pickett Designs. The total project construction cost is approximately $829 million.
The University of Michigan opened its 350,000-sf Cardiovascular Center in Ann Arbor on June 7, 2007. The $215 million, five-story facility was designed by Boston-based Shepley, Bulfinch, Richardson & Abbott and built by general contractor Barton Malow Company of Southfield, Mich. The center includes 48 inpatient beds, 11 procedure rooms, eight operating rooms, diagnostic facilities, outpatient spaces, an atrium, and a patient library. The facility is connected to University Hospital and C.S.
Duke University Medical Center has select TK&A (Tsoi Kobus & Associates) to design an expansion of the medical center's existing Cancer Center in Durham. The five-level, 185,000-square-foot addition will provide a new entrance for the Cancer Center and flexibility for future expansion. The new facility will provide comprehensive patient services including chemotherapy and radiation treatment centers, radiology services, and patient support programs. The expansion is the first new project based on Duke's 2006 master plan.
The University of New Mexico Cancer Treatment and Clinical Research Facility broke ground on its Albuquerque facility in May of 2007. Housing comprehensive cancer services, the facility is the first phase of a 190,000-sf, $90 million ambulatory cancer treatment and clinical research facility. Occupancy is slated for early 2009. The project will accommodate patient care, imaging, diagnosis, radiotherapy, radiosurgery, robotic surgery, and novel radioisotopes programs in collaboration with the State of New Mexico’s national laboratories.
Sanford Children’s Hospital will break ground on May 23, 2007 on a $36.5 million facility in Sioux Falls, S.D. The five-story hospital will house a clinic and internal employee services on the ground floor with four floors of patient and clinic space including 62 private rooms on the upper floors. A third-floor skyway will connect to the neonatal intensive care unit. Slated for completion in spring of 2009, the hospital features a medieval castle theme. Site preparation is being performed by Henry Carlson Co.
Construction on the Center for Advanced Healing at St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise, Idaho, is nearing completion. Sited between two existing fully operational hospital towers, the $103 million, 400,000-sf facility is slated to open in September of 2007. The project began construction in fall of 2004. The 10-story facility will house 16 operating rooms, a 32-bed ICU, and 128 private patient rooms.
Stanford University Medical Center has awarded Sodexho’s Health Care Services Division a five year facilities management contract for plant operations and maintenance. Including 4.5 million sf of space at Stanford Hospital and Clinics, Stanford University School of Medicine, and the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, the multi-million dollar contract will also include facility infrastructure renewal projects.
