UTSW Medical Center Designs Biomedical Research Building

The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center is designing a new biomedical research building that will be sited on its Dallas campus. Slated to begin construction in May 2006, the $20 million facility will be built by St. Louis-based McCarthy. Perkins & Will is designing the four-story, 75,000-sf building which will have dedicated lab space on the first two floors and shell space on the top two floors. Center for Life Science Boston Breaks Ground

Lyme Properties LLC broke ground on the 705,000-sf Center for Life Science Boston on July 26, 2005. Formerly called the Blackfan Research Center, the $250-million project is slated for completion in 2007. Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center will occupy 360,000 sf in the building. Lyme Properties will also construct a second facility, the Longwood North Research Center, on a half acre property adjacent to Beth Israel. Completion of the second facility is expected by mid-2007.

SIU Breaks Ground on Springfield Cancer Center

Southern Illinois University School of Medicine has broken ground on the 66,000-sf Cancer Institute in Springfield, Ill. Designed by Hanson Professional Services of Springfield with consulting provided by BSA Life Structures of Chicago, the three-story building will consolidate the School's multidisciplinary cancer clinics, research programs, and outreach services.

City of Hope National Medical Center Opens Helford Clinical Research Hospital

City of Hope National Medical Center opened the $200-million Helford Clinical Research Hospital in Duarte, Calif., on July 15, 2005. Designed by NBBJ, the 347,000-sf, 144-bed facility will advance research in cancer and other life threatening diseases and will house one of the nation's largest hematopoietic cell transplantation programs.

West Virginia University Expands Ruby Memorial Campus

West Virginia University is expanding its Ruby Memorial Hospital and Health Sciences Campus in Morgantown with the construction of a new North/Northwest Tower. The eight-story addition will include 81 beds, six operating rooms, a new ICU and pediatric ICU, conference rooms, a pharmacy and lab, and sleeping rooms for on-call physicians. The North/Northwest Tower is slated for occupancy in October 2005.

Baylor Health Care Constructs Cell Processing Lab

Baylor Health Care System is constructing a 2,200-sf cell processing lab at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. The $2.4-million GMP facility will house custom cancer vaccine manufacturing operations for Baylor subsidiary ODC Therapies. Sited in the Zelig H. Lieberman Research Building, the facility will help ODC continue the clinical trial process for patients in late stage malignant melanoma. Baylor plans to develop a significantly larger facility that includes office and lab space for ODC and other companies within two years.

Anne Arundel Medical Center Plans Kent Island Expansion

Anne Arundel Medical Center is planning to break ground on an $8- to $10-million clinical facility on Kent Island, Md., in summer of 2006. The three-story, 40,000-sf building will house primary care services including radiology and laboratory testing and is slated for completion in early 2008. Future plans for the four-acre site include the construction of another single-story 15,000-sf facility.

The ten-story, 300,000-sf facility will provide space for clinical research in the Biological Sciences Division. Additionally, the University of Chicago is nearing completion on the Center for Integrative Science in August 2005.

Froedtert & Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Center is planning a $120-million facility on its Wauwatosa, Wisc., campus. The 173,000-sf building is slated to begin construction in fall 2005 with completion expected in late 2007. Designed by OWP&P Architects of Chicago, the facility will maximize clinical space through a template of standard rooms that accommodate multiple activities from teaching and research to patient exams. Regional Medical Center of San Jose Creates Patient Tower

Regional Medical Center of San Jose has selected Skanska USA Building as construction manager for a $74,000 hospital addition/renovation project in San Jose, Calif. Designed by Hayes & Oakley Architects, the project will include a 138,000-sf patient bed tower and 24,000 sf of renovations. The construction phase is expected to begin in August with a May 2008 completion. Regional Medical Center of San Jose is owned by HCA. The project will be managed by Skanska's Nashville, Tenn. office.

Baylor Health Care Breaks Ground on Texas Heart Hospital

Baylor Health Care System will break ground on June 7, 2005 on the Texas Heart Hospital on Baylor's Plano campus. The $106-million, 180,000-sf facility will accommodate inpatient and outpatient care, heart surgery, cardiac catheterizations, vascular surgery, non-invasive cardiovascular testing, and 24-hour emergency care. The four-story, 68-bed facility, a partnership between Baylor and 86 cardiovascular physicians and surgeons, is expected to open in January 2007.

OhioHealth Constructs Dublin Hospital

OhioHealth is constructing a 325,000-sf hospital on an 89-acre site in Dublin, Ohio. The $130-million full-service facility is the first hospital in Dublin and is slated for occupancy in October 2007. The 94-bed hospital will accommodate an emergency department, intensive care rooms, labor and delivery, and inpatient/outpatient surgery services.

The project consists of 109,000 sf of new construction and 29,000 sf of renovations and will house 8 operating rooms, 17 post-anesthesia care units, and expanded radiology services. Nashville-based Ameris Health System has broken ground on the first phase of the 112,000-sf Summit Hospital in Phenix City, Ala. Brasfield & Gorrie of Birmingham, Ala. is the project contractor. The $19 million, four-story acute care hospital will provide full medical and surgery services. Completion is slated for spring 2006.
