California Pacific Medical Center Plans Research Center

California Pacific Medical Center’s Research Institute has been awarded almost $27 million in federal research grants from the National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Department of Defense. California Pacific Medical Center is planning over $1 billion in upcoming construction projects at its San Francisco campuses, including a new 100,000-sf research center at the Pacific campus that will be constructed in six years.

Des Peres Hospital Renovates St. Louis Facility

Des Peres Hospital, part of Tenet St. Louis , initiated construction on a $3-million renovation of its west St. Louis County facility in early October 2004. Designed by architect ACI Boland to increase capacity and streamline operations, the two-floor renovation will add four dementia and thirteen private medical beds; eleven new surgical preparation and recovery beds; new waiting areas for surgery and radiology; and two ADA-accessible restrooms.

Banfield Pet Hospital Breaks Ground on Portland Headquarters

Banfield, The Pet Hospital , broke ground in October 2004 on its $25-million headquarters in Portland, Ore. The 225,000-sf facility will be a two-story structure constructed over a sub-grade parking garage. Sited on 5.5 acres, the project includes plans for a two-acre off-leash dog park open to the public. Banfield's headquarters, which will replace its current facility, will house 300 employees and is slated to open in December 2005. Banfield is the nation's largest private veterinary practice with over 400 full service pet hospitals.

Cape Fear Valley Health System Constructs Health Pavilion North

Cape Fear Valley Health System is constructing Health Pavilion North, a new outpatient center in Fayetteville , N.C. Providing outpatient diagnostic and treatment services, the facility is being developed by Cogdell Spencer Advisors in partnership with Cape Fear Valley Heath System. Ground was broken on October 13, 2004 on the two-story, 64,000-sf Health Pavilion which will provide urgent care facilities, primary care physician offices, an on-site lab, pharmacy, sleep lab, and physical and occupational therapy.

Johns Hopkins Builds New Clinical Building

Johns Hopkins Medicine has awarded Skanska USA Building the pre-construction services assignment for the New Clinical Building project for The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md. The 1.3 million-sf building will consist of a single structure with two distinct building programs - the Cardiovascular & Critical Care Tower and the Children's & Maternal Hospital. In addition, a new entry court and a below-grade parking garage will be constructed.

University of Kansas Hospital Constructs Center for Advanced Heart Care

The University of Kansas Hospital is constructing the 238,000-sf Center for Advanced Heart Care on the north side of its existing hospital in Kansas City, Kan. Designed by RTKL Associates of Baltimore, the $72-million facility is slated for completion in mid-2006. The project contractor is J.E. Dunn Construction Co. of Kansas City.

University of New Mexico Hospital Expands Children's Hospital

The University of New Mexico Hospital will initiate a $233 million expansion of its Albuquerque Children's Hospital in fall of 2004. The 487,000-sf project will include six new floors of clinical space, an improved emergency department, and a new maternity center. Completion is expected by fall of 2007.

Memorial Hermann Healthcare System Breaks Ground on Medical Office Building

Memorial Hermann Healthcare System will break ground on a $155 million medical office plaza at Texas Medical Center in Houston in October 2004. Housing over 500,000 sf and a 2,400-car parking garage, the facility will accommodate up to 200 physicians. With restaurant and retail occupying the first two floors, the building will house a 100,000-sf ambulatory care center with eight surgical suites, four endoscopy suites, and a full modality imaging center.

Seton Healthcare Constructs Dell Children's Center

Seton Healthcare Network has selected the Austin office of Clarksdale, Miss.-based White Construction to manage the construction of the new Dell Children's Medical Center of Central Texas. Sited on the former Robert Mueller Airport in Central Austin, the 470,000-sf state-of-the-art pediatric center will triple the footprint of the existing Children's Hospital of Austin which it will replace. Slated for completion in 2007, the 169-bed hospital is estimated to cost approximately $200 million. Construction will begin in fall 2004.

Naval Hospital Expands in Jacksonville

Naval Hospital Jacksonville has received $28.4 million from a military construction appropriations bill passed by the U.S. Senate to fund 43,000 sf of renovations and construction of a 75,000-sf, four-story addition to the existing medical building. The project will focus on improvements to the surgical and labor and delivery departments.

University of Texas Southwestern Renovates Moncrief Cancer Center for Technology

The University of Texas Southwestern Moncrief Cancer Center in Weatherford will expand its Foster Lane facility to house a 3,500-sf oncology clinic. The expansion is part of a $1.8-million technology upgrade to accommodate a $1.15-million Varian 21EX-d linear accelerator that provides intensity modulated radiation therapy. The linear accelerator will be installed by early 2005 with construction on the clinic slated for completion in late spring 2005.

BioSquare 3 Nears Completion

Boston University Medical Center, Boston University, and the city of Boston celebrated the topping off of the eight-story BioSquare 3 in Boston in September 2004. Being the third lab and research facility on the 14-acre campus, the 160,000-sf building is 60 percent pre-leased to Boston University and Boston University Medical Center. Completion is expected in fall 2005.

Carolinas HealthCare System Constructs Levine Children's Hospital

Carolinas HealthCare System broke ground in September 2004 on the $85-million Levine Children's Hospital at the Carolinas Medical Center complex in Charlotte, N.C. Additionally, Carolinas is planning a $5-million expansion of the complex that will connect the children's hopital, the ICU Tower, and the existing facility on the site. Constructed in tandem with the children's hospital, the 22,000-sf addition will expand the pharmacy and cafeteria and is slated for completion in 2007.
