Kaleida Health Plans Global Vascular Institute

Kaleida Health is planning to break ground in July of 2009 on the $275 million Global Vascular Institute in Buffalo, N.Y. Located on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, the 600,000-square-foot GVI will connect to Buffalo General Hospital. Completion is expected by early 2012. An adjacent medical research and teaching building, to be managed by the University at Buffalo, will also be constructed.

University Health System Plans San Antonio Hospital

University Health System is planning to construct a $778 million replacement hospital in San Antonio. Designed by the Dallas office of Perkins + Will and San Antonio-based Garza/Bomberger & Associates, RVK Architects, and Richard Sanchez Architects, the two million-sf project will include the renovation and integration of two existing towers. Construction will begin on the replacement hospital in 2009 with completion slated for 2012.

Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine Plans Research Building

Northwestern University is planning to construct a $200 million biomedical research facility for the Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. Located on the Streeterville campus of Northwestern Memorial Hospital, the facility will connect to the existing Lurie Medical Research Center. A medical office tower providing between 500,000 sf and 700,000 sf will also be constructed at the site.

Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation Breaks Ground on Research Tower

The Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation broke ground on an 185,000-sf research tower in Oklahoma City in May of 2009. Providing 34 laboratories, clinical treatment and research space, and administrative offices, the $125 million facility will house 300 researchers, physicians, and staff. Occupancy is slated for spring of 2011. LEED Gold certification for sustainable design will be sought for the project, which will feature a living roof, daylighting, and a sophisticated HVAC system.

Boone Hospital Constructs Patient Tower

Boone Hospital officially broke ground on a $125 million patient tower in Columbia, Miss., in May of 2009. Construction began on the facility in November of 2008 with completion expected in spring of 2011. Designed to meet LEED sustainable design standards, the tower will provide 84 medical surgical beds and 44 intensive care beds in a total of 128 private rooms. The facility will be built by Reinhardt Construction of Centralia and S.M. Wilson of St. Louis.

Lakeview Medical Center Breaks Ground on Replacement Hospital

Lakeview Medical Center broke ground on a $42 million replacement hospital in Rice Lake, Wis., in May of 2009. The 130,000-sf facility will feature an energy-efficient design and is slated for occupancy in December of 2010. The hospital will be built for ease of future expansion, including the addition of a third floor.

M.D. Anderson Banner Cancer Center Plans Gilbert Facility

M.D. Anderson Cancer Center is partnering with Banner Health to build a cancer hospital and outpatient treatment center in Gilbert, Ariz. The $90 million M.D. Anderson Banner Cancer Center will provide comprehensive cancer services including surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and clinical care. Designed to support Banner’s clinical trials research, the center will include 76 inpatient beds and a 120,000-sf outpatient center. Occupancy is expected in late 2011.

SEHA Plans Abu Dhabi Hospitals

SEHA, the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company, is planning to construct two world-class hospitals in Mafraq and Al Ain in Abu Dhabi. Replacing existing hospitals, the sustainably-designed facilities are expected to open in 2013. Designed by Burt Hill with Allen and Shariff as project manager, the 245,000-sm Mafraq hospital will provide 690 beds.

Babcock University Plans Medical School

Babcock University will break ground in June of 2009 on the $250 million College of Health and Medical Sciences in Ilisan Remo, Nigeria. The facility will house the schools of Medicine, Public and Allied Health, Pharmacy, Dentistry, and Nursing. The project will include a biomedical research center and a 750-bed teaching hospital.

Irwin Army Community Hospital Plans Replacement Facility

A $334 million replacement hospital will be built in Fort Riley, Kan., to replace Irwin Army Community Hospital. The project includes a 263,000-sf hospital, a 289,000-sf clinic, a central energy plant, and support. The joint-venture preconstruction team is Walton Construction Co. of Kansas City and Balfour Beatty Construction of Dallas. Construction will begin in fall of 2009 with completion expected in spring of 2012.

Cox South Breaks Ground on Emergency Department

Cox South Hospital broke ground on its new 78,000-sf emergency department in May of 2009. Located in Springfield, Mo., the 62-bed facility will include universal exam rooms, trauma bays, observation rooms, OB-GYN suites, psychiatric areas, and a pharmacy. The $53 million facility will open in August of 2010 and is being built by Beck-Walton, a joint venture of Walton Construction Co. and the Beck Group of Dallas.

Imperial College London Breaks Ground on Biomedical Research Facility

Imperial College London, in partnership with Imperial College Healthcare NHS, broke ground on a £99 million biomedical research facility in April of 2009. Slated for completion in late 2011, the six-story building will be part of the planned Academic Health Science Center in London. Housing 450 researchers, the facility will provide laboratories for translational research in cardiovascular disease, arthritis, diabetes, and obesity.

Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare Builds Memphis Pediatric Hospital

Construction began on the 613,512-sf facility in February of 2008 with completion expected in 2011. The project team includes FKP Architects and Self Tucker Architects with Skanska USA Building as general contractor.
