DOD Uses Drawbase for Military Health System Management

The United States Department of Defense (DOD) awarded Drawbase Software a next phase contract in August of 2009 to expand the use of DRAWBASE within the Military Health System. Additionally, the next version of DRAWBASE will be implemented in the 2010 release of the DMLSS (Defense Medical Logistics Standard Support) system. Enabling data from many sources to be managed in a single repository, the integrated system will improve logistics responsiveness for DOD medical facilities.

Rockingham Memorial Hospital Builds Harrisonburg Facility

Rockingham Memorial Hospital is building a $280 million replacement facility in Harrisonburg, Va. Designed by Earl Swensson Associates and built by Bovis Lend Lease, the 620,000-sf project is slated for completion in June of 2010. The five-story plus basement facility will provide 238 inpatient beds.

Bridgepoint Health Builds Replacement Hospital

Bridgepoint Health will break ground in early fall of 2009 on a 680,000-sf replacement hospital in Toronto. The ten-story, 472-bed facility will be built to attain LEED sustainable design certification. The project team includes Plenary Health, Innisfree, HDR/Diamond Schmitt Architects, PCL Constructors, and Johnson Controls. Occupancy is expected in spring of 2013.

Truman Veterans Hospital Breaks Ground on Addition

Truman Veterans Hospital broke ground on a $25 million addition in Columbia, Mo., in August of 2009. The project includes 27,000-sf of new construction and 12,000-sf of renovation to existing facilities. The new building will feature a surgical suite with five operating rooms. An additional $2 million will support renovated and upgraded research space. The general contractor for the expansion and renovation project is River City Construction of Peoria, Ill.

AIA Announces Healthcare Design Awards

The American Institute of Architects Healthcare Design Awards recipients for 2009 were announced in August of 2009. Recognition was given to Providence North Portland Clinic, designed by Mahlum, and to Oregon Health and Science University’s Peter O. Kohler Pavilion, designed by Perkins and Will. Both facilities are located in Portland, Ore.

Billings Clinic Opens Comprehensive Cancer Center

Billings Clinic opened its 50,000-sf comprehensive cancer center in August of 2009 in Billings, Mont. The four-story facility houses two linear accelerators. Billings Clinic treats approximately 1,600 patients annually for cancer, many of whom participate in clinical trials research.

University of Rochester Medical Center Opens Ambulatory Surgery Facility

The University of Rochester Medical Center celebrated the opening its new 80,000-sf ambulatory surgery facility on July 30, 2009. The URMC Surgery Center features 10 operating suites, three procedure rooms, 43 private pre- and post-anesthesia cubicles, 10 post-anesthesia bays, a pharmacy, and sterile equipment processing facilities. The project team included developer Castle Office Group, designer Hanlon Architects, consultant D.J. Sullivan, and construction manager LeChase Construction.

United Regional Health Care Opens Bridwell Tower

United Regional Health Care opened the $70 million Bridwell Tower in Wichita Falls, Texas, in August of 2009. The five-story, 179,000-sf facility features a hybrid endovascular suite and includes facilities for general surgery, labor and delivery, diagnostic imaging, and pediatric care. The tower is linked to the main hospital campus by a sky bridge. Construction began on the tower in August 2007.

University at Buffalo Partners with Kaleida Health on Joint Research Facility

The University of Buffalo and Kaleida Health broke ground on a $291 million clinical care and research facility on August 3, 2009. Located on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, the ten-story, 600,000-sf project includes Kaleida Health’s Global Vascular Institute, the University at Buffalo’s Center for Clinical and Translational Research, and a biosciences incubator for the university. The collaborative facility will connect to Buffalo General Hospital and is slated for completion by late 2011.

James Haley Veterans Medical Center Completes Expansion

A $12 million surgical suite expansion at James Haley Veterans Medical Center in Tampa was completed in summer of 2009. The 40,000-sf project included the construction of a $7.5 million, 25,000-sf addition to the hospital’s pathology laboratory. A $3.5 million, 12,000-sf renovation and expansion of the emergency department was also completed. The design architect for both projects was VOA Associates.

Fort St. John Hospital Breaks Ground on Healthcare Campus

Fort St. John Hospital broke ground on a $298 million healthcare campus in July of 2009. Located on 40 acres in Fort St. John, B.C., Canada, the $298 million project is comprised of a 55-bed acute care hospital and a 123-bed, 54,000-sf residential care facility. The replacement hospital will feature an expanded emergency department, two new operating rooms, an endoscopy suite, and maternity care rooms. LEED Gold sustainable design certification will be sought for the project, which is slated for completion in spring of 2012.

West Cumberland Hospital Plans Redevelopment

West Cumberland Hospital has selected Laing O’Rourke as the general contractor for an extensive redevelopment of its hospital campus in Hensingham, U.K. Groundwork will begin in late 2009 on the £100 million project with construction commencing in 2010. The sustainably-designed facility will include an emergency department, surgical suites, inpatient care, and an outpatient clinic.

Fortis Healthcare Builds Gurgaon Medicity

Fortis Healthcare is building the Fortis International Institute of Medical Sciences on 10.7 acres in Gurgaon, India. The 1.5 million-sf first phase of construction will house between 250 and 400 beds for cancer, trauma, and pediatric care. Construction began in August of 2007 with occupancy slated for November of 2010. Subsequent construction phases will support other multi-specialty departments with a total of 1,000 beds.

Pennsylvania State University Opens Hershey Cancer Institute

Pennsylvania State University celebrated the opening of the $121 million Hershey Cancer Institute on June 26, 2009. The 176,000-sf facility is located on the Hershey Medical Center Campus in University Park, Pa. Designed by Payette of Boston, the translational research facility integrates clinical treatment and medical research. The project team included associate architect Array Healthcare Facilities Solutions, construction manager Gilbane Building, and MEP engineer Bard, Rao + Athanas (BR+A).
