Baylor Health is building the $213 million McKinney Medical Center in McKinney, Texas. The 332,000-sf facility will provide women's services, cardiovascular care, orthopaedics, neurology and neurosurgery, oncology and a full-service emergency department. Completion is expected in July of 2012.

Center for Prevention and Treatment of Infectious Diseases Opens in Turkmenistan

The Center for Prevention and Treatment of Infectious Diseases opened in September of 2010 in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan. The 260-bed facility is part of a $103 million medical city that includes the 150-bed Central Skin and Venereal Diseases Hospital, the 60-bed Tuberculosis Treatment and Prevention Center, the Center for AIDS Prevention, and the Central Laboratory and Blood Center.

Terrebonne Medical Center Builds Cancer Facility

Terrebonne General Medical Center is building the $14.8 million Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Care Center in Houma, La. LEED Silver sustainable design certification will be sought for the three-story, 49,000-sf facility, which will feature energy efficient building systems and improved indoor air quality. The comprehensive cancer center is slated for completion in May of 2011.  The general contractor for the project is McDonnel Group of Metairie.

Hoag Opens Irvine Hospital

Hoag Hospital Irvine opened in late August of 2010 in Irvine, Calif. The 244,000-sf renovated facility houses surgical suites, a cardiovascular center, an emergency room, imaging, outpatient treatment, and inpatient rooms. The cost of the renovation was $84 million. The hospital features energy efficient systems for lighting, water, and sterilization.

St. Mary's Hospital for Children Modernizes Bayside Facility

St. Mary’s Hospital for Children awarded Turner Construction a $72 million contract in August of 2010 to provide pre-construction and construction management services for the modernization of its facility in Bayside, N.Y. The scope of work includes a five-story, 90,000-sf expansion of the existing 90,000-sf hospital and modernization of the existing building. The construction will be phased to allow for full occupancy of the 97-bed children's hospital. The project is scheduled for completion in May of 2013.

University of Arkansas Medical Sciences Plans Translational Research Build-Out

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences will build out 33,660 nsf of shell space in the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute in Little Rock to house translational research laboratories. Supported by $10.4 million in federal stimulus funding, the collaborative facility will support the development of mechanism-based, molecularly-targeted novel cancer therapeutics.

The three-story, 86,770-sf building will house an emergency department, primary care, an on-site laboratory, and specialty services. Featuring advanced diagnostic imaging, the 24-hour facility will accommodate up to 35,000 patient visits annually.

Nemours Builds Orlando Pediatric Hospital

Nemours is building a $380 million pediatric hospital in the Lake Nona medical district in Orlando, Fla. The 630,000-sf facility will provide 95 beds and is slated for completion in 2012. Designed by Perkins+Will and Stanley Beaman & Sears, the hospital is part of a planned 60-acre pediatric health campus that will include research facilities, an emergency department, and clinical care. The construction manager for the project is Skanska USA Building. Occupancy is expected in 2012.

University of Texas Plans New UT Southwestern Hospital

The University of Texas is planning to build an $800 million academic medical center in Dallas to replace UT Southwestern University Hospital in St. Paul. The 12-story, 1.3 million-sf facility is slated for completion in September of 2014. Providing 424 beds, the patient-centered hospital will provide integrated facilities for research, education, and clinical treatment. The hospital will include 40 emergency rooms, 24 operating rooms, a helipad, and a dedicated thermal energy plant. Construction is expected to begin on the project in March of 2011.

The Methodist Hospital Opens Outpatient Center

The Methodist Hospital opened its 1.6 million-sf outpatient center in Houston in July of 2010. The 26-story facility houses orthopedic surgery, cardiac and vascular imaging, a cancer center, weight management services, and radiology. The building features a patient-centered design for ease of wayfinding in a healing environment. The project was designed by WHR Architects with Hensel Phelps Construction as general contractor and Broaddus & Associates as project manager.

The Methodist Hospital Research Institute (TMHRI) will open its 440,000-sf research facility in Houston in October of 2010. Housing 90 principal investigators and 800 staff, the interdisciplinary facility will include a GMP bioprocessing facility and an infectious disease research lab.

Sainte-Justine Hospital Initiates $995 Million Modernization Project

CHU Sainte-Justine Mother and Child University Hospital Center is initiating a $995 million modernization of its Montreal facility. The existing hospital will be extensively renovated and two new buildings will be constructed. The first facility will house medical research and the second will provide an intensive care unit, a birthing center, a neonatal unit, and specialty care. The project will add a total of 419 beds. Construction will begin on the new facilities in 2011 and reach completion in 2016.

Phoenix Children's Hospital Plans Avondale Medical Center

Phoenix Children’s Hospital is planning to build a new pediatric medical center in Avondale, Ariz. The first phase includes a $33.5 million, 35,800-sf specialty/urgent care center and an outpatient clinic with 25 exam rooms and two treatment rooms. A 35,700-sf medical office building will be built in phase two. A planned third phase of construction will include a 48-bed, 95,800-sf pediatric hospital.

University of Missouri School of Medicine Opens Neuroscience Center

The University of Missouri School of Medicine opened its 9,000-sf Neuroscience Center in August of 2010. The $1.4 million facility was created by renovating existing laboratory space on the seventh floor of the Medical Sciences building in Columbia, Mo. Construction began on the project in September of 2009.
