Columbia University is planning to build a 14-story medical school tower in New York. The facility is being designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro with Gensler as the architect of record. Construction is expected to begin in early 2013 and reach completion in late 2017. Featuring sculpturally exposed interiors, the facility will support collaborative, team-based learning.
Upstate University Hospital is building the $75 million Upstate Cancer Center in Syracuse, N.Y. The five-story, 90,000-sf facility will provide adult and pediatric cancer care with private infusion rooms, a rooftop garden, a patient education facility, and a family resource center. LEED Silver sustainable design certification will be sought for the project. The general contractor is LeChase Construction. Completion is expected in fall of 2013.
Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes, Ind., broke ground in June of 2012 on a $109 million patient tower addition and renovation. The project consists of a new five-story, 200,000-sf tower and the redesign of the existing healthcare facility. The 120-bed inpatient tower features the Cardiac Center of Excellence, a state-of-the-art cardiology unit, complete with a standard and a hybrid catheterization laboratory. The facility also boasts improved spaces for orthopedics and obstetrics.
Stony Brook University is planning to build the $194 million Medical and Research Translation (MART) facility in Stony Brook, N.Y. The eight-story, 250,000-sf teaching and research building will support the discovery of advanced cancer treatments and medical imaging technologies. The project will include a 300-seat auditorium and will accommodate up to 250 faculty members. A $230 million, 170-bed facility to house Stony Brook Children's Hospital will also be constructed.
Stamford Hospital has selected e-Builder's Enterprise to manage construction project information for a new Specialty Building and Bed Tower. Skanska has been retained as the construction manager for the facility master plan. e-Builder will be used to track meeting minutes, project cost controls, construction administration process automation of RFIs, change orders, submittals, and project status reporting.
Construction continues on a major expansion of King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Designed by Cannon Design, the project includes an 893,405-sf, 302-bed cancer center; an 11-story, 409,000-sf biotechnology research tower; a 205,000-sf emergency medicine facility; and a 194,000-sf utility plant. The project features an extensive underground tunnel network for vehicles, supply transport, and utilities. The cancer center is expected to reach completion by year-end 2013.
The $855 million Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago opened in June of 2012. The 23-story, 1.25 million-sf facility provides 288 single-patient rooms with a footprint of 290 sf each. Designed to foster translational research, Lurie Children's Hospital is located on the campus of Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine and is connected to Prentice Women's Hospital. Ground was broken on the project in April of 2008. LEED sustainable design certification will be sought for the hospital.
The University of California, San Francisco opened the $200 million Sandler Neurosciences Center at UCSF Mission Bay in May of 2012. The five-story, 237,000-sf facility houses the Department of Neurology, the Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases, the Memory and Aging Center, and the W.M. Keck Foundation Center for Integrative Neuroscience. Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the basic and clinical research building will house approximately 100 principal investigators and their teams. Construction began on the project in May of 2010.
Imperial College London opened the $114 million Imperial Centre for Translational and Experimental Medicine (ICTEM) in May of 2012. Located on the Hammersmith Campus, the six-story building combines laboratory space for up to 450 scientists with a dedicated facility for evaluating and developing new medical treatments through clinical trials. The ICTEM features advanced cardiovascular research labs, next-generation gene sequencing machines, and a cancer research center. The facility was designed by Sheppard Robson.
The University at Buffalo and Kaleida Health opened the $291 million Gates Vascular Institute (GVI) and the Clinical and Translational Research Center (CTRC) in late May of 2012. Located on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, the ten-story, 478,000-sf collaborative facility is connected to Buffalo General Hospital to promote the integration of translational research. The project architect was Cannon Design with Turner Construction as general contractor.
The University at Buffalo has selected HOK to design the new School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. The $375 million medical school will be built to attain LEED Gold certification. Construction will begin by fall of 2013 with completion expected in 2016. The facility will be integrated with UB's academic medical center to promote a synthesis of instruction, research, and treatment.
Cooper University Hospital began building the $100 million Cooper Cancer Institute in May of 2012 in Camden, N.J. Designed by Francis Cauffman, the four-story, 103,000-sf facility will provide comprehensive cancer services in a single location and will support the integration of translational research with patient care. Completion is expected in September of 2013.
The University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro opened in May of 2012. The $445 million, 630,000-sf facility provides 231 beds in single-patient rooms and houses centers of care for cancer, cardiology, emergency, maternity, neuroscience, pediatrics, and surgery. Designed by HOK and RMJM Hillier to meet LEED sustainable design criteria, the facility features an energy recovery system, a cogeneration plant, photovoltaic panels, and an advanced curtainwall system.
The University of South Alabama is engaged in a $72 million expansion of the Children's and Women's Hospital in Mobile. Construction began in December of 2010 on a five-story, 195,000-sf pediatric wing that will include eight operating rooms, a 20-bed ICU, a neonatal ICU, and 68 inpatient rooms. The construction cost of the addition is $45 million. The balance will fund the creation of a new central energy plant and the purchase of medical equipment.
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill dedicated the $87 million Koury Oral Health Sciences Building in April of 2012. Designed by Flad Architects, the five-story, 216,000-sf facility features technology-rich lecture halls, five 30-seat seminar rooms, flexible laboratories, and a 105-seat simulation and training center. The building was constructed by KBR. LEED Silver sustainable design certification will be sought for the project, which includes a system to capture and use condensate water from mechanical equipment.
