Rutgers University and RWJBarnabas Health Construct Athletic Performance Center

The RWJBarnabas Health Athletic Performance Center at Rutgers University is under construction in Piscataway, N.J. Supporting a world-class sports medicine program, the four-story, 295,000-sf facility will also include state-of-the-art practice facilities for men's and women's basketball, wrestling, and gymnastics. The collaboration includes RWJBarnabas becoming the exclusive health care provider for Rutgers Athletics, as well as developing and managing the sports medicine curriculum and research activities.

Province of Alberta Builds Calgary Cancer Centre

The Province of Alberta will begin construction in fall of 2017 on the $1.4 billion Calgary Cancer Centre. Designed by Stantec and DIALOG, the project will provide over two million square feet of space for research, treatment, and educational services. The facility will offer 160 inpatient beds, 15 radiation vaults, outpatient clinics, research labs, a clinical trials unit, and a 1,650-stall underground parking garage. The construction manager for the design-build project is PCL Construction.

University of Colorado Plans Sports Medicine and Performance Center

The University of Colorado will begin construction in July of 2018 on the $61.4 million William J. Hybl Sports Medicine and Performance Center in Colorado Springs. Created in partnership with Penrose-St. Francis Health Services, an affiliate of Centura Health, the 104,000-sf facility will provide classrooms, research labs, and clinics for sports medicine, imaging, pain management, athletic training, and physical and occupational therapy.

Nebraska Medicine Opens Buffett Cancer Center

Nebraska Medicine opened the $323 million Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center in June of 2017 in Omaha. Located at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, the 615,000-sf translational facility is designed to promote collaboration between physicians and researchers in the delivery of advanced patient care. The project is comprised of two towers, a 10-story, 98-lab research facility and an eight-story, 108-bed inpatient treatment center.

Utah State University Constructs Center for Clinical Excellence

Utah State University is constructing the $28 million Center for Clinical Excellence in Logan. Designed by Jacoby Architects, the 105,000-sf facility will serve as a comprehensive human services center, integrating various clinics and services in an interdisciplinary environment. Comprised of two wings connected by transparent bridges, the four-story project will accommodate clinical training for students in the Emma Eccles Jones College of Education and Human Services.

Memorial Sloan Kettering and CUNY Build Cancer Care and Health Science Facility

Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) and the City University of New York (CUNY) are developing a joint facility in New York City. MSK’s 23-story outpatient tower, the 750,000-gsf David H. Koch Center for Cancer Care, will feature advanced surgical suites, radiation therapy rooms, and dedicated space for clinical trials. CUNY’s six-story, 400,000-gsf (336,000-asf) Hunter College Science and Health Professions Building will provide sophisticated simulation training suites, teaching and research labs, a technology-rich library, faculty offices, and a vivarium.

Penn Medicine Plans Inpatient Pavilion

Penn Medicine is planning to construct the $1.5 billion New Patient Pavilion in Philadelphia. Delivered through an Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) process, the 1.5 million-sf, 17-story facility will provide 500 private inpatient rooms, hybrid operating suites, intensive care units, a cancer center, and an emergency department. The pavilion will feature flexible rooms designed for ease of conversion to different kinds of units to support changing patient care needs.

Dell Seton Medical Center Opens in Austin

The $295 million Dell Seton Medical Center opened in May of 2017 in Austin, Texas. Designed by HKS and built by JE Dunn, the 517,000-sf teaching hospital accommodates training programs for the University of Texas Dell Medical School and features 13 technology-rich operating rooms and a telemedicine monitoring suite. LEED sustainable design certification will be sought for the 211-bed facility, which is owned and operated by Seton Healthcare Family, a subsidiary of Ascension Health.

Sunshine Coast University Hospital Opens in Birtinya

The $1.8 billion Sunshine Coast University Hospital opened in April of 2017 in Birtinya, Australia. The sustainably designed facility provides 450 inpatient beds with the capacity to expand to over 738 beds in the future. The 1,776,000-sf project houses the Sunshine Coast Health Institute, which includes a 370-seat medical instruction auditorium and a clinical research and education unit.

University of Glasgow Opens Imaging Centre of Excellence

The University of Glasgow officially opened the £32 million Imaging Centre of Excellence in late March of 2017. Located at the South Glasgow Hospitals campus in Scotland, the facility features a 7-Tesla clinical MRI scanner to support advanced neurological and cardiovascular research. The building also houses neurosurgery operating suites and a biomedical business incubator called the Clinical Innovation Zone. The project was designed by BMJ Architects and built by BAM Construction.

University of Nebraska Medical Center Breaks Ground on Global Center for Advanced Interprofessional Learning

The University of Nebraska Medical Center officially broke ground in April of 2017 on the $119 million Balbach Global Center for Advanced Interprofessional Learning in Omaha. Serving as the headquarters for the Interprofessional Experiential Center for Enduring Learning (iEXCEL), the four-story, 191,884-sf facility will feature simulation suites and virtual immersive reality environments for medical training. The ground floor of the building will be occupied by the National Center for Health Security and Biopreparedness.

University of Cincinnati Health Constructs Gardner Neuroscience Institute

The University of Cincinnati Health is building the $60.5 million Gardner Neuroscience Institute in the Corryville area of Cincinnati. The 114,000-sf outpatient facility was designed by Perkins+Will to provide patient-centered neurological and psychiatric care. The four-story project will include an auditorium, a patient lounge, a café, an outdoor rehabilitation area, and an underground parking garage. Ground was broken on the facility in February of 2017 and occupancy is expected in 2019. The construction cost of the building is $26.6 million.

UNC Rex Healthcare Opens Heart and Vascular Hospital

UNC Rex Healthcare opened the $235 million Heart and Vascular Hospital in Raleigh in March of 2017. Located on the University of North Carolina medical campus, the eight-story, 300,000-sf tower houses 127 inpatient rooms, an intensive care unit, and two large hybrid operating rooms to accommodate complex surgical procedures. General contractor Skanska began work on the facility in September of 2014 for a construction contract value of $93 million.
