With its new Clinics and Surgery Center, University of Minnesota Health has taken a bold new patient-centered, technology-enhanced approach to clinical care. Patients are greeted by a concierge instead of waiting at a reception desk, and are guided through their visit by a step-by-step itinerary; and their progress is monitored through an RFID-chipped badge they wear for the duration of the visit. The building has improved the way care is delivered, while at the same time improving space utilization.

Texas A&M University is planning to build a $127 million facility for the College of Dentistry in Dallas. The 158,000-sf Clinic and Education Building will offer classrooms, clinical areas, study spaces, and approximately 300 dental chair stations. The nine-story facility will include a parking garage on the first three levels and is slated for completion in fall of 2019.

University of Maryland Medical Center broke ground in November of 2017 on a $116 million patient care tower in Baltimore. Located on the Midtown campus, the 13-story, 275,000-sf facility will treat chronic illnesses including asthma, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, and HIV. The tower will also house the Community Health Education Center and conference facilities. The sustainably designed building will feature a green roof and is slated for completion in 2020. 

UT Southwestern is initiating a $480 million expansion of William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital in Dallas. Providing a consolidated location for medical specialties, the 12-story, 650,000-sf tower will house the Peter O’Donnell Jr. Brain Institute, 19 operating rooms, an emergency department, and acute inpatient care facilities. The project will provide 300 new beds and two parking structures. Occupancy is expected in 2020. 

University of South Florida Health began construction in September of 2017 on a $173 million facility to house the Morsani College of Medicine and Heart Institute in Tampa. Designed by HOK, the 319,000-sf project will provide laboratories, learning spaces, conference rooms, faculty offices, an auditorium, a clinical trials unit, and a cardiac care facility. Sited in a $3 billion development created by Strategic Property Partners, the building is located near Tampa General Hospital and USF’s simulation training center.

The United States Senate’s Committee on Appropriations approved a bipartisan bill in early September that provides $36.1 billion in funding for the National Institutes of Health for fiscal year 2018, representing a $2 billion increase from 2017. The House of Representatives approved a $1.1 billion increase in NIH funding, with the actual amount expected to be closer to that allocated by the Senate bill.

SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital broke ground in August of 2017 on a $550 million academic medical center in St. Louis. Sited adjacent to the existing hospital campus, the 800,000-sf project will include construction of a nine-story tower and an adjoining three-story ambulatory care building. Featuring 316 private inpatient rooms, the facility will provide a Level I trauma center, an emergency department, intensive care units, and a cafeteria. Completion is expected in September of 2020. 

NYU Langone Health opened an expansion of the Perlmutter Cancer Center in Huntington in August of 2017. Built to accommodate 30,000 patient visits annually, the 22,000-sf facility provides 24 infusion bays, 16 exam rooms, diagnostic laboratories, and an on-site pharmacy. The Perlmutter Cancer Center also has locations in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens.

The University of Maryland, Baltimore and the University of Maryland, College Park are partnering to create the $210 million Cole Field House, a leading-edge sports medicine and practice facility in College Park. The first phase of construction, comprising a full-size indoor football field, was completed in August of 2017, enabling the second phase to commence.

University Hospitals is planning build the $24 million Rainbow Center for Women & Children in Cleveland. Designed by Moody Nolan, the three-story, 40,000-sf outpatient facility will provide pediatric and women’s health services. LEED Platinum sustainable design certification will be sought for the project, which will feature a bioswale and a partial green roof with an outdoor terrace on the third floor. Construction is slated to begin on the facility in fall of 2016 with completion expected in 2017.

Mayo Clinic is planning to locate three research centers in a four-story facility on the Destination Medical Center campus in Rochester, Minn. Designed by HOK and RSP Architects, the project will be built, owned, and operated by M.A. Mortenson. The Mayo Clinic will be the anchor tenant in the 89,000-sf building, which will accommodate the Center for Individualized Medicine, the Center for Regenerative Medicine, and the Kern Center for the Science of Health Care Delivery.

The University of Kansas Health System is constructing a $100 million facility in Overland Park. Located on KU Health’s Indian Creek medical campus, the 122,507-sf hospital will provide both inpatient and outpatient care with eight surgical suites, 18 patient rooms, an imaging center, and space for an additional 17 beds. Occupancy is expected in 2018. 

The University of Oklahoma will begin construction in late 2017 on a 550,000-sf patient tower in Oklahoma City. Built by Turner Construction, the eight-story facility will include a rooftop penthouse and an underground level. The tower will provide approximately 32 operating rooms and 144 beds. The duration of construction is estimated at 30 months with completion expected in 2019.

University of Utah Health broke ground in late June of 2017 on the $132 million Ambulatory Care Complex in Salt Lake City. Featuring flexible outpatient clinic modules and advanced surgical suites, the 305,000-sf facility will also provide an additional 72 inpatient beds. Completion is expected by summer of 2019. The building is part of the Utah Health Campus Transformation Project, an initiative to optimize the integrated delivery of research, patient care, and medical education.

The RWJBarnabas Health Athletic Performance Center at Rutgers University is under construction in Piscataway, N.J. Supporting a world-class sports medicine program, the four-story, 295,000-sf facility will also include state-of-the-art practice facilities for men's and women's basketball, wrestling, and gymnastics. The collaboration includes RWJBarnabas becoming the exclusive health care provider for Rutgers Athletics, as well as developing and managing the sports medicine curriculum and research activities.
