Western Carolina University Plans Natural Sciences Building and Medical Offices

Western Carolina University (WCU) is planning to build a $110 million natural sciences building in Cullowhee, N.C. The construction manager for the project, which will be delivered in phases, is Skanska USA. Completion is expected by 2020. Additionally, WCU is engaged in a public-private partnership with Summit Healthcare Group to construct a 30,000-sf medical office complex on the West Campus.

University of Michigan Health System Constructs Brighton Health Center South

University of Michigan Health System broke ground in October of 2016 on the $175 million Brighton Health Center South. The two-story, 297,000-sf ambulatory care facility will house a comprehensive musculoskeletal center, an infusion therapy clinic, surgical suites, a sleep lab, a radiation oncology center, and over 40 adult and pediatric medical specialties. Occupancy is expected in summer of 2018.

Built by a joint venture of Skanska and Closner Construction, the project will provide 243 beds in a 164,000-sf facility as well as a medical office building and a parking structure. Stanford Health Care Builds Palo Alto Replacement Hospital

Stanford Health Care is building an 824,000-sf replacement hospital in Palo Alto, Calif.  Designed by Rafael Viñoly Architects in association with Lee, Burkhart, Liu, the patient-centered facility will provide 17 operating rooms, advanced imaging suites, an emergency department, a Level One trauma center, a helipad, and 368 private inpatient rooms. The sustainably designed project will utilize exterior glass panels to optimize natural light and will feature a central atrium and five healing gardens.

Health Services Laboratories Creates London Pathology Headquarters

Health Services Laboratories (HSL) is renovating an existing structure known as the Halo building to create its pathology laboratory headquarters in London. Comprising five subterranean levels and ten stories above grade, the 133,000-sf facility will provide a CL3 biocontainment laboratory, specialized research suites, and the largest automated blood sciences lab in the United Kingdom. The contractor for the £21 million fit-out project is ISG.

Indiana University Builds Multi-Institutional Academic Medical Center

Indiana University is building the Multi-Institutional Academic Health Science and Research Center in Evansville. Housing medical education programs for the University of Evansville, the University of Southern Indiana, and Indiana University, the four-story, 140,000-sf facility will provide a clinical research area, classrooms, a simulation center, a dental clinic, and an amphitheater. Construction began in June of 2016 and is slated for completion in February of 2018.

St. James Mercy Hospital Plans Hornell Medical Center

St. James Mercy Hospital will break ground in late 2016 on a $55 million hospital and medical village in Hornell, N.Y. The facility will provide a comprehensive range of inpatient and outpatient services including surgery, imaging, emergency care, orthopedics, dialysis, physical therapy, and cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation. The project is being designed by Razak & Associates and will be built by LeChase Construction. Completion is expected in mid-2018.

Emory University Hospital Constructs Inpatient Tower

Emory University Hospital is constructing a $200 million medical tower in Atlanta. Designed by SmithGroupJJR, the nine-story, 456,144-sf facility will provide 210 inpatient beds as well as an intensive care unit, diagnostic suites, and specialized treatment areas. The project team includes commissioning agent WorkingBuildings and cost estimation consultant Costing Services Group. The tower will be connected to the Emory Clinic, the Winship Cancer Institute, and the main hospital by a pedestrian bridge.

HCA East Florida Plans Academic Medical Center at Nova Southern University

HCA East Florida will begin construction in fall of 2016 on a $219 million hospital in Davie, Fla. The facility will be located on the campus of Nova Southeastern University adjacent to HCA's existing emergency department at the site. The 200-bed academic medical center will support collaborative research, education, and training programs as well as accommodating clinical trials.

University of Louisville Health is constructing a $79 million pediatric outpatient clinic in Louisville. Located on the University's Health Sciences Campus, the eight-story, 170,000-sf facility will include a diagnostic laboratory, an imaging center, a conference suite, a pharmacy, and a rooftop garden. The project was designed by GBBN and Stanley, Beaman & Sears and is being built by Messer Construction. Formal groundbreaking occured in fall of 2016 with occupancy expected in July of 2018.

The five-story, 340,000-sf facility will provide 72 intensive care beds and 28 surgical suites. The project will enable existing space at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital to be redeveloped, creating a new genetics lab and expanded laboratory and imaging facilities. Completion is expected in early 2019.
