Purdue University Dedicates New Interdisciplinary Facility

Purdue University dedicated the $12.4-million Gerald D. and Edna E. Mann Hall on May 15, 2007. Located in Discovery Park in West Lafayette, Ind., the facility will provide offices for researchers and staff engaged in health care engineering, advanced manufacturing, cancer care, and homeland security systems.

Wayne State University Constructs Engineering Development Center

Wayne State University broke ground on the $27.3 million Marvin I. Danto Engineering Development Center in midtown Detroit on May 2, 2007. The project will enable technology development for health care, biotechnology, and sustainable energy solutions. The three-story facility will be located next to the University’s existing College of Engineering and is slated for completion in fall of 2008.

West Virginia University Renovates Engineering Sciences Building

West Virginia University will begin an $11 million renovation of its Engineering Sciences Building in Morgantown in May of 2007. The 33,000-sf project is comprised of a four-story addition including a two-story atrium, a 150-seat technology-rich lecture hall, a student learning center, teaching and research laboratories, and faculty offices. Additional office and lab space will be created in the renovated boiler room of the existing high-bay space. The project architect is Alpha Associates of Morgantown. Completion is slated for summer of 2008.

Drexel University Designs West Philadelphia Academic Facility

Drexel University has selected design firm Diamond + Schmitt Architects to design a new academic building at the heart of Drexel’s West Philadelphia campus. The $49-million facility will support the Department of Bioscience by providing state of the art learning spaces, 32 800-sf research laboratories, and nine 1,200-sf teaching labs. The five story, 28,500-sf building will also house the Steinbright Career Development Center which serves students and alumni in cooperative education and career placement.

Duke University Plans EXCEL Facility at Pratt School of Engineering

Duke University is planning to construct the 120,000-sf Experimental and Collaborative Environment for Learning (EXCEL) for Pratt School of Engineering in Durham, N.C. Slated for completion in 2010, the project will feature "collaboratories," specialized facilities that combine laboratory and lecture space to enhance the intersection of education, research, and design experience.

Beloit College Breaks Ground on Center for the Sciences

Beloit College celebrated the groundbreaking of its $36.5 million Center for the Sciences in late April of 2007. The 116,000-sf facility will house 38 laboratories, 43 staff offices, and 12 classrooms. The project includes sustainable design features such as a vegetated roof, energy efficient technologies, and native plant landscaping. The Center houses a 1,500-sf atrium.

Norfolk State University Dedicates McDemmond Center for Applied Research

Norfolk State University dedicated the $35 million Marie V. McDemmond Center for Applied Research in April 2007 on its Norfolk, Va., campus. The nanotechnology facility houses cleanrooms, laboratories, and offices and will be fully occupied by fall of 2007. The building is the first phase of a planned 25-acre technology project called the Research and Innovations to Support Empowerment (RISE) park.

Villanova University Breaks Ground on College of Nursing

Villanova University broke ground in April 2007 on its $32 million College of Nursing in Villanova, Pa. The 75,000-sf, three-story facility will house six labs, a 200-seat auditorium, a 200-seat lecture hall, a simulated nursing station, offices, and classrooms. The project will also include a center for nursing research and space for global health studies. The center is being designed by Baltimore-based architectural firm Richter Cornbrooks Gribble. Completion is expected in summer of 2008.

University of Texas Creates Center for Advanced Biomedical Imaging Research

The University of Texas (UT) Health Science Center at Houston and M.D. Anderson Cancer Center are partnering to create the Center for Advanced Biomedical Imaging Research. Located at the University of Texas Research Park at the Texas Medical Center in Houston, the six-story, 315,000-sf facility is being constructed in collaboration with GE Healthcare and the Texas Enterprise Fund.

University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Opens Nat'l Botulism Research Center

The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth opened its new bioengineering, molecular biology, and cell biology research facility in April of 2007. Home of the National Botulism Research Center, the $14.4 million high-security building will accommodate biotechnology and biochemistry research. The 22,081-sf project was designed by Architectural Resources Cambridge with modular, flexible laboratories and extensive safety measures including the use of exterior concrete barriers.

UC Davis Plans Engineering Unit 4

The University of California, Davis is planning to construct the $32 million Engineering 4 facility. Designed by CO Architects with Research Facilities Design (RFD) providing laboratory design services, the project will be located in UC Davis’ central campus for chemical engineering and materials science. Housing 40,000 asf, the building is expected to be two to three stories in height and fit within the context of creating the fourth building for the College of Engineering.

College of Marin to Build Science/Math/Central Plant Building

The College of Marin will build a new Science/Math/Central Plant Complex in Kentfield, Calif. The building will accommodate approximately 41,000 nsf of instructional and science laboratories, classrooms, offices, meeting rooms, and administrative space for the departments of physical, earth, and life sciences; mathematics; environmental landscape; and health sciences. The facility will also house a new campus data center and central utility plant in a building complex totaling approximately 77,000 gsf.

South Dakota School of Mines & Technology Builds New Chemistry & Chemical Engineering Building

South Dakota School of Mines & Technology is planning to build a new Chemistry/Chemical Engineering Building in Rapid City, S.D. The project includes a multi-story two wing classroom and an R&D facility. The classroom portion of the building will include lecture areas, laboratory spaces, and offices. The research and development portion of the building will be open space for future development for interdisciplinary research activities.

University of Central Florida Designs College of Medicine

The University of Central Florida is designing a new $68 million College of Medicine facility at the UCF Health Sciences Campus at Lake Nona in Orlando. The project team includes Ellenzweig Associates of Cambridge as design architect and HuntonBrady Architects of Orlando as architect of record. The four-story, 100,000-sf building will house the medical library, classrooms, offices, and laboratories. The medical library includes study, computer, and collaboration areas.

UCSF To Build Cardiovascular Research Center
