Premier BioSource opened a 78,000-sf swine production facility in July of 2019 in Rensselaer, Ind. Designed as a barrier facility with advanced HEPA filtration and positive air pressure systems, the $7.5 million farrow-to-finish complex will enable biomedical research on the creation of organs for xenotransplantation in humans. Supporting lean manufacturing operations, the biocontainment facility features advanced building systems including individual controls for the air pressure in each room and an energy recovery wheel for optimal heat exchange.

NorthStar Medical Radioisotopes completed construction in July of 2019 on a 20,000-sf production facility in Beloit, Wis. Featuring the company's RadioGenix® System, the project features state-of-the-art dissolution and source vessel filling equipment for the processing of molybdenum-99 (Mo-99) to support the creation of technetium-99m (Tc-99m) for diagnostic imaging applications. The facility also houses a quality control lab, an automated packaging line, and an advanced molybdenum recycling complex.

The University of Cambridge will break ground in November of 2019 on the Heart and Lung Research Institute in Cambridge in the United Kingdom. Sited adjacent to the Royal Papworth Hospital on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, the facility will accommodate 380 academic and industry scientists engaged in the discovery of new therapeutics and diagnostic tools for cardiovascular conditions.

NeoGenomics will break ground in late 2019 on a $55 million oncology laboratory and global headquarters facility in Fort Myers, Fla. Designed by Studio Plus, the 150,000-sf facility will provide the comprehensive cancer diagnostics company with research and administrative space for up to 575 employees. Located on a 14-acre parcel, the building will support clinical trials of new oncology therapeutics with a state-of-the-art molecular lab with next-generation sequencing capabilities.

ElevateBio has selected DPS Group and TRIA to design ElevateBio BaseCamp, a 108,000-sf cGMP development and manufacturing facility in Waltham. Located in a 430,000-sf office and lab building, the facility will offer integrated R&D, process development, and cGMP manufacturing services for novel therapeutic technologies.

The University of Windsor celebrated the opening of the CAD$30 million Essex Centre of Research (CORe) in June of 2019 in Windsor, Ontario. Designed by NORR and Hariri Pontarini Architects, the 46,000-sf facility was constructed as an addition to Essex Hall and provides collaborative wet and dry laboratories for the study of advanced materials, transitional health, and medical physics.

Texas A&M University opened the $104 million Medical Research and Education Building II (MREB II) in June of 2019 in Bryan, Texas. Designed by Flad Architects and OMNIPLAN, the 155,077-sf project comprises a 48,200-sf vertical expansion to the existing Medical Research and Education Building (MREB I) and a 122,800-sf addition, enabling the College of Medicine's basic science departments to be collocated in a single campus.

The University of Missouri System broke ground on the $221 million NextGen Precision Health Institute in June of 2019. Located at the University of Missouri-Columbia, the five-story, 265,000-sf translational research facility will accommodate over 60 principal investigators working in collaboration with industry partners to develop innovative personalized medicine solutions.

The University of California, San Francisco opened the $275 million Precision Cancer Medicine Building (PCMB) in June of 2019. Located on UCSF's Mission Bay campus, the six-story facility consolidates outpatient services in a 170,000-sf structure with integrated cancer research labs, 63,000 sf of clinical space, 45 infusion bays, two accelerator vaults, and sophisticated imaging and diagnostic suites.

Northwestern University opened the $560 million Louis A. Simpson and Kimberly K. Querrey Biomedical Research Center in Chicago in June of 2019. Designed by Perkins+Will, the 12-story, 625,000-sf facility provides the Feinberg School of Medicine with integrated laboratory neighborhoods for the study of cancer, heart disease, and neurodegenerative disorders.

Aldevron will begin construction in August of 2019 on a 14-acre biologics campus in Fargo, N.D., where it is currently headquartered. The first phase comprises a two-story, 189,000-sf facility for the manufacture of plasmid DNA, proteins, mRNA, and antibodies. Increasing Aldevron’s GMP and GMP-Source™ production capacity up to tenfold, the structure will connect to the company's existing GMP facility and is expected to be fully operational by early 2021.

The Wistar Institute is partnering with University Place Associates to construct a 240,000-sf life science discovery hub in the University City district of Philadelphia. Designed to accelerate innovation by providing shared resources and critical infrastructure, the collaborative project will provide leasable laboratories and offices for biotech firms, research companies, and academic institutions.

Iovance Biotherapeutics entered into a lease agreement in May of 2019 to construct a 136,000-sf facility at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. Featuring modular processes for optimal scalability, the building will support commercial and clinical production of therapeutics based on tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) technologies. The $125 million facility is slated for completion in mid-2021. Iovance will contribute approximately $75 million towards the cost of the building over three years for equipment and construction of the manufacturing suites.

The Rockefeller University dedicated the $500 million Stavros Niarchos Foundation–David Rockefeller River Campus in May of 2019 in New York. The 160,000-sf complex features the $300 million, 135,600-sf Marie-Josée and Henry R. Kravis Research Building which provides flexible labs, two amphitheaters, offices, conference rooms, a dining area, and outdoor terraces. The two-story, horizontally oriented structure was designed to enhance collaboration and can support over 600 scientific staff.
