Grand River Aseptic Manufacturing (GRAM) is constructing a $60 million facility in Grand Rapids, Mich. Designed by CRB, the 61,500-sf facility will include a state-of-the-art cleanroom, two formulation suites, and 14,000 sf of shell space to accommodate future growth. Capable of producing a wide range of commercial batch sizes, the aseptic manufacturing plant will integrate leading-edge automation technologies and high-speed instrumentation to support the production of parenteral medicinal solutions.
The University of New Mexico completed construction of the $67 million Physics, Astronomy, and Interdisciplinary Science Center in Albuquerque in October of 2019. Designed by EYP Architecture & Engineering and Van H. Gilbert, the 139,100-gsf facility houses the department of physics and astronomy as well as accommodating research programs in bioinformatics, genomics, electron microscopy, optics, spatial informatics, stable isotopes, and human and primate biomedical research.
Beacon Pharmaceuticals is planning to break ground by early 2020 on a 150,000-sf biosciences accelerator and headquarters facility in Jupiter, Fla. Designed by Kobi Karp Architecture & Interior Design, the $80 million facility will feature a pharmaceutical business incubator to support early-stage companies from concept to commercialization.
Texas Tech University opened the $77 million Experimental Sciences Building II in October of 2019 in Lubbock, Texas. Comprising four stories and a basement level, the 117,000-gsf facility provides collaborative environments for interdisciplinary research including four general wet labs, three core instrumentation suites, two synthetic labs, a vivarium, a BSL-2 lab, conference rooms, and offices for researchers and principal investigators.
The University of Oklahoma opened the 75,500-sf Gallogly Hall in late September of 2019 in Norman. Designed by Page Southerland Page to house the Stephenson School of Biomedical Engineering, the facility provides technology-rich classrooms and teaching labs, a large lecture hall, a maker space, faculty and graduate student offices, interactive learning venues, and a rooftop terrace.
Mayo Clinic opened the $32.4 million Discovery and Innovation Building in late August of 2019 in Jacksonville, Fla. Developed in collaboration with Lung Biotechnology PBC, a subsidiary of United Therapeutics Corporation, the 75,000-sf facility features three ex-vivo lung perfusion (EVLP) suites to test and prepare lungs for transplantation. The three-story building also includes collaborative biomedical research space, an automated stem cell manufacturing hub, and a life science incubator with wet labs and co-working space.
Pennsylvania State University is planning to construct the $98.5 million Animal, Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences Building in University Park. Designed by HOK, the 105,000-sf facility will provide the College of Agricultural Sciences with research labs, a general-purpose classroom, faculty offices, seminar rooms, and a state-of-the-art vivarium.
The University of Warwick is planning to build the £54.3 million Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research Building in Coventry in the United Kingdom. Designed by Hawkins\Brown, the 75,000-sf facility will include flexible open labs for up to 300 researchers, a 400-seat lecture hall, a café, a large public entrance, and exhibition space. The five-story building will offer a central ‘lab village’ core, with offices and collaboration zones located on the perimeter to activate the façade.

HALIX is constructing a 72,000-sf cGMP facility at Leiden Bio Science Park in the Netherlands. Adaptive Biotechnologies is expanding its presence in Seattle with the lease of a 100,000-sf headquarters building in Seattle. The lab and office facility is located in the Lake Union life science district and is being developed by Alexandria Real Estate Equities. Adaptive will occupy the entire structure, which is sited adjacent to its existing facility. Building amenities will include an open-air plaza, a rooftop desk, a fitness center, locker and shower rooms, and direct access to water sports on Lake Union.
Foundation Medicine will locate its 580,000-sf life science headquarters in a planned 625,000-sf building in Boston's Seaport Square. Designed by Morris Adjmi Architects and Stantec, the leased building will provide leading-edge research, collaboration, and administrative facilities to support the creation of innovative biomedical therapies.
