Norton Women's and Kosair Children's Hospital opened its expanded and renovated facility in Louisville in December of 2014. The $117.8 million project included construction of a patient tower and the creation of an open, spacious floorplan with abundant natural light. Designed by HKS, the 373-bed hospital provides pediatric and adult operating rooms, a pedatric emergency center, an integrated cancer services suite, a neonatal ICU, and an adult critical care center.

The University of Waterloo broke ground on the $18.6 million Applied Health Sciences facility in December of 2014. Designed by IBI Group Architects, the four-story, 56,000-sf project will be constructed as an expansion of the existing B.C. Matthews Hall and the adjoining Lyle S. Hallman Institute. The addition will provide a 350-seat lecture hall and technology-rich teaching laboratories, including labs for anatomy and kinesiology. The general contractor is Melloul Blamey Construction. Occupancy is expected in fall of 2016.

The $623 million Saint Joseph Hospital opened in Denver in December of 2014. The 831,000-sf facility was built by Mortenson Construction using modular construction methodology, resulting in a savings of 72 work days and $4.3 million, according to a University of Colorado Boulder study. The 400-bed facility features entirely private inpatient rooms, advanced diagnostic imaging suites, and spacious operating rooms. The hospital is owned by SCL Health and jointly operated with National Jewish Health.

Children's Hospital of Richmond at Virginia Commonwealth University is building a $168 million outpatient pavilion. Consolidating all outpatient pediatric services in a single location, the 15-story, 640,000-sf facility will provide 72 exam rooms, faculty offices, a surgical area with two operating rooms and two procedure rooms, and areas for diagnostic testing, imaging, and laboratory services. The project architect is HKS and the general contractor is Skanska.

The Clinical Cell and Vaccine Production Facility (CVPF) at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania is designed to facilitate a bench-to-bedside approach, where the clinical materials to treat disease are manufactured and administered within the hospital using cells from the patient’s own body. The project has achieved international recognition for its unique potential for optimizing patient care and for its success treating human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and cancer.

Biotrial is constructing the Clinical Pharmacology Unit in Newark, N.J. Located adjacent to Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in the University Heights Science Park, the 60,000-sf facility will support early development clinical studies in association with University Hospital. The project was designed by Francis Cauffman and is being built by Joseph A. Natoli Construction. Occupancy is expected in mid-2015.

Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center will begin construction in early 2015 on a $50 million instructional facility for the School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, N.C. Located in the Wake Forest Innovation Quarter, the 168,000-sf building is designed to support one of the most advanced medical school curriculums in the country and will include technology-rich clinical simulation suites, small group learning spaces, an anatomy lab, offices, and meeting rooms. Occupancy is expected in July of 2016. The project developer is Wexford Science + Technology, LLC.

Missouri State University is building the $14.1 million O’Reilly Clinical Health Science Center in Springfield. The 55,000-sf facility will provide medical training labs, mannequin simulation suites, classrooms, offices, group study areas, and a multidisciplinary health clinic. The general contractor for the project is DeWitt & Associates. Completion is expected in fall of 2015.

Collin College is building the 125,000-sf Cary A. Israel Health Sciences Center on the Central Park Campus in McKinney, Texas. Designed by PBK Architects, the three-story facility features an advanced clinical simulation center, an 150-seat lecture hall, classrooms, offices, and medical training labs for programs in nursing, emergency services, surgical technology, and respiratory care. Built by Pogue Construction at a cost of $44 million, the project includes a central plant and a 25,000-sf conference center.

The University of California, San Francisco Medical Center will open its $1.5 billion hospital complex at Mission Bay in February of 2015. The project comprises the Benioff Children’s Hospital San Francisco, the Betty Irene Moore Women’s Hospital, and the Bakar Cancer Hospital. The 289-bed complex is designed to support the integration of biomedical research with patient care and features advanced imaging suites, a helipad, and a fleet of robotic couriers to deliver supplies, meals, and medications.

The University of Kansas Hospital is planning to construct the $279 million Cambridge North Tower in Kansas City. The 300,000-sf project will provide 92 inpatient beds, 28 ICU beds, 12 operating rooms, and cancer laboratories. The facility will include clinical space for neurology, neurosurgery, oncology, and ear, nose, and throat programs. Occupancy is expected in 2017.

Michigan State University is constructing the $61 million Bio Engineering Facility in East Lansing. Designed to support interdisciplinary biomedical research, the 130,000-sf building will provide open laboratories and offices for faculty from the colleges of Engineering, Human Medicine, and Natural Science. The sustainably designed facility will be physically connected to the existing Clinical Center C-Wing and Life Sciences B-Wing with proximity to the Radiology Building. Ground was broken on the project in June of 2013 with occupancy expected in fall of 2015.

The University of Missouri-St. Louis will begin construction in early 2015 on the $17 million Patient Care Center. The 48,000-sf facility will provide individual and group learning areas for the colleges of Optometry and Nursing and 35,000 sf of clinical space for eye and primary care. Designed by HOK, the project features student-faculty consultation rooms located within each of the four clinical areas. Occupancy is expected in summer of 2016.

The University of California, Los Angeles dedicated the Edie & Lew Wasserman Building in October of 2014. Designed by Richard Meier and Partners Architects, the $115.6 million research and treatment facility provides space for the Stein Eye Institute, the Department of Neurosurgery, and the Institute of Urologic Oncology. Integrating patient care, medical research, and physician training, the six-story, 100,000-sf project will support the collaboration of multidisciplinary physician teams.

Ohio State University Medical Center dedicated the $1 billion James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute in Columbus in November of 2014. Designed for the delivery of personalized, genomics-based therapies, the 21-story tower features biomedical labs integrated into inpatient floors to provide true bench-to-bedside translational research and treatment. The hospital provides 14 technology-rich operating rooms, a 15-bed emergency department, and a radiation oncology center with seven vaults.
