Planning for the new Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital (JHACH) Research and Education Building in St. Petersburg, Fla., took place before all the building users were identified, and used strategies like identifying the business and design drivers to support collaboration, innovation, and communication. “The vision was to create a state-of-the-art space for pediatric health research and education, in a building that would draw people out of their offices and into the collaborative areas, to teach, work, and communicate,” says Roberta Alessi, executive vice president and chief operating officer at JHACH.

Northern State University opened the $25.2 million Jewett Regional Science Education Center in late August of 2019 in Aberdeen, S.D. Designed by TSP and SmithGroup, the 54,000-sf STEM facility features "classatories" for disciplines including biology, ecological sciences, chemistry, physics, and biomedical sciences. Comprising two wings, the building houses research labs, a tissue culture lab, an imaging suite, a computer classroom, an 80-student classroom, a flex classroom, and faculty offices.

University of Cincinnati Opens Health Sciences Building

The University of Cincinnati opened the $61 million Health Sciences Building in September of 2019. Designed by Perkins+Will and Moody Nolan, the 117,000-sf facility accommodates interprofessional education programs for the College of Allied Health Sciences. A curved glass curtainwall allows abundant natural light to illuminate the four-story structure, which offers flexible lecture halls, classrooms, and labs for interactive learning.

Housing the Gunn College of Health Sciences and Human Services, the 87,000-sf facility offers an 80-person round classroom, a learning stair, a collaborative student lounge, and a full-height atrium.

Towson University is planning to construct a $166 million facility for the College of Health Professions in Towson, Md. Collocating the college's undergraduate and graduate departments in a single integrated structure, the 229,000-sf facility will accommodate programs in nursing, health sciences, occupational therapy, occupational science, speech-language pathology, and audiology. The collaborative project is being designed by Perkins+Will and JMT Architecture.

Miami Dade College opened the $56 million Center for Learning, Innovation and Simulation in September of 2019 in Miami. Designed by Kahler Slater and Harvard Jolly Architecture, the 132,000-sf facility features a simulation hospital with 15 patient rooms utilizing sophisticated mannequins for medical training. The five-story building also offers a CAVE virtual reality chamber, ten examination rooms, a home health apartment, an ambulance simulation suite, a physical therapy room, wet labs, and four student lounges.

Indiana State University opened the College of Health and Human Services in August of 2019 in Terre Haute, Ind. Collocating programs in nursing, social work, applied health science, and kinesiology and sports medicine, the collaborative 185,000-sf complex offers leading-edge facilities for education, training, and research. The first phase of the project was completed in 2018 and included construction of a four-story, 85,000-sf addition housing classrooms and offices.

Designed by KAI Design & Build, the four-story, 96,000-sf facility offers teaching labs, classrooms, flexible learning spaces, and a dental clinic. Accommodating 11 health programs, the center will serve approximately 900 students and is expected to attain LEED Gold sustainable design certification.

Hackensack Meridian Health Plans Inpatient Pavilion

Hackensack Meridian Health will break ground in September of 2019 on a $714 million inpatient pavilion at Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey. Providing 438,000 assignable square feet, the 530,000-gsf facility will feature three floors of private inpatient rooms, a 50-bed intensive care unit, and 24 operating rooms, including an intraoperative MRI. Offering 100 medical-surgical beds, the patient-centric structure will house a 50-bed orthopedic institute and a new sterile processing department.

University of Saskatchewan Constructs Sports Science Facility

The University of Saskatchewan is building the $45 million Merlis Belsher Place in Saskatoon, Canada. The multi-sport facility will include a community ice rink, a gymnasium with two full-size basketball courts, locker rooms, lounges, therapy rooms, and a 2,500-seat hockey bowl with room for an additional 1,000 fans. The project will feature the $2 million Ron and Jane Graham Sport Science and Health Centre, a performance research facility supporting athlete conditioning, education, nutrition, injury prevention, and recovery.
