Texas Tech University Breaks Ground on Experimental Sciences Building II

Texas Tech University broke ground on the $77 million Experimental Sciences Building II in February of 2017 in Lubbock, Texas. Designed by TreanorHL to support interdisciplinary research, the collaborative 117,000-gsf facility will provide four general wet labs, three core instrumentation suites, two synthetic labs, a vivarium, a BSL-2 lab, conference rooms, and offices for researchers and principal investigators. The construction manager for the LEED-certified facility, which comprises four stories and a basement, is Project Control.

Swansea University Constructs Computational Foundry

Swansea University began construction in February of 2017 on the £31 million Computational Foundry in Wales in the United Kingdom. Designed by AHR Architects to foster collaboration with industry and academic partners, the interdisciplinary facility will accommodate research and teaching programs in the computational and mathematical sciences. Housing over 150 investigators, the Computational Foundry will provide leading-edge experimental setups, sophisticated R&D labs, prototyping suites, conference rooms, lecture halls, and offices.

Yale University Breaks Ground on Science Building

Yale University broke ground in February of 2017 on the 280,300-sf Yale Science Building in New Haven, Conn. Designed by by Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects, the seven-level teaching and research facility will feature specialized laboratories, underground core labs, classrooms, offices, a 500-seat lecture hall, and a shared commons area.

BELIMO's North American Headquarters Attains LEED Gold

BELIMO Americas has attained LEED Gold sustainable design certification for its North American Headquarters in Danbury, Conn. Designed by The S/L/A/M Collaborative, the 195,000-sf facility comprises 129,000 sf of logistics and manufacturing space, 15,000 sf of testing labs, and 51,000 sf of office space. BELIMO is a Switzerland-based company engaged in the development, production, and marketing of actuators, valves, and sensor solutions for controlling heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems.

Ryerson University Constructs Centre for Urban Innovation

Ryerson University is building the Centre for Urban Innovation in Toronto. Designed by Moriyama & Teshima, the project includes renovating and expanding an existing structure to create a 40,000-sf facility providing wet and dry research labs, fabrication suites, and offices for business incubation and commercialization. The collaborative center will accommodate researchers in infrastructure, logistics, transportation, alternative energy, water management, food production, and data analytics.

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab Breaks Ground on Integrative Genomics Building

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory broke ground in late January of 2017 on the $91.5 million Integrative Genomics Building in Berkeley, Calif. Designed by SmithGroup, the four-story, 82,604-gsf facility will house approximately 300 researchers and staff from the Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute and the Systems Biology Knowledgebase.

University of Idaho Opens Integrated Research and Innovation Center

The University of Idaho opened the $53 million Integrated Research and Innovation Center (IRIC) on its Moscow campus in January of 2017. Designed by NBBJ, the collaborative 70,000-sf project features flexible laboratories for interdisciplinary research, an advanced visualization suite, offices, conference rooms, and core labs with shared equipment. Hoffman Construction Company broke ground on the facility in August of 2014. LEED Gold sustainable design certification will be sought for the project.

Central Michigan University Opens Biosciences Building

Central Michigan University opened the $95 million Biosciences Building in January of 2017 in Mount Pleasant. Designed by Stantec to promote interaction and collaboration, the four-story, 169,000-sf facility provides teaching labs, research labs, lecture halls, an active learning classroom, an auditorium, and faculty offices. The building also includes a BSL-3 suite, an herbarium, an imaging center, and an aquatic research vivarium. Clark Construction began work on the project in September of 2014.

SUNY Binghamton Constructs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences

The State University of New York at Binghamton is constructing the $60 million School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in New York. Designed by The S/L/A/M Collaborative, the 105,000-sf building will provide sophisticated teaching and research labs, lecture halls, faculty offices, a library, and student activity space. Accommodating 240 students and approximately 36 faculty members, the four-story facility will feature interactive classrooms that can accommodate lectures as well as team-based learning activities.

University of Texas at Austin Constructs Engineering Education and Research Center

The University of Texas at Austin is building the $314 million Engineering Education and Research Center. Designed by Ennead Architects, the 433,000-sf facility will provide the Cockrell School of Engineering with multidisciplinary research labs, teaching labs, classrooms, meeting rooms, collaboration space, a central atrium, and a 299-seat auditorium. LEED Silver sustainable design certification will be sought for the project, which will feature the National Instruments Student Project Center, the Texas Instruments Laboratories, and the Innovation Center.

University of Arizona Constructs Health Sciences Innovation Building

The University of Arizona is building the $165 million Health Sciences Innovation Building in Tucson. Designed by CO Architects, the ten-story, 226,000-sf facility will feature simulation training suites for programs in medicine, pharmacy, nursing, and public health. A minimum of LEED Silver sustainable design certification will be sought for the fast-track project, which will also provide clinical laboratories and a variety of group learning areas.

Bucks County Community College opened its $17 million Science Center in January of 2017 in Newtown Township, Pa. Designed by KCBA Architects to support STEM programs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, the 43,000-sf facility provides four student collaboration spaces and ten laboratories, including a biotechnology suite with adjoining rooms for instrumentation and tissue culture. The two-story center utilizes glass walls to enhance visibility and features a geothermal heating and cooling system.

Mount Wachusett Community College Opens Asquino Science Center

Mount Wachusett Community College opened the $41 million Daniel M. Asquino Science Center in December of 2016 in Gardner, Mass. Supporting STEM programs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, the project included construction of a 44,000-gsf addition providing classrooms, faculty offices, study spaces, and teaching labs for biology, chemistry, physics, microbiology, earth science, and anatomy and physiology. The existing Arthur F. Haley Academic Center was also renovated and an adjacent 2,300-sf greenhouse was built.

Imperial College London began construction in early 2017 on the £70 million Michael Uren Biomedical Engineering Research Hub in London. Designed by Allies & Morrison, the collaborative 14-story building will provide flexible laboratories, an outpatient clinic, an auditorium, and interaction spaces. Located on the White City campus, the 215,000-sf translational research facility will be built to attain BREEAM sustainable design certification and will feature a highly efficient service model with interconnected utility plants on each floor.
