Bowdoin College has opened a sustainably designed complex in Brunswick that includes the John and Lile Gibbons Center for Arctic Studies and Barry Mills Hall. Designed by HGA, the two structures represent the first commercially scaled mass timber buildings in the state of Maine. The $37 million project offers a total of 46,000 sf of teaching, research, and museum space.
HITT Contracting will relocate its headquarters to a planned 270,000-sf development in Falls Church, Va. Designed by Gensler, the six-story facility will advance the firm's aspiration to redefine the future of construction through innovation, partnership, and sustainability. The project involves the transformation of an existing office structure, previously a satellite campus operated by Virginia Tech, into a collaborative educational hub for the built environment.

Matrix Innovation Center opened the Matrix ONE lab and office building in May of 2023 in the Amsterdam Science Park. Designed by MVRDV, the 140,000-sf structure provides flexible labs and offices, a 100-seat auditorium, and a range of settings for informal interaction. As well as offering leasable space for private companies, Matrix ONE houses SustainaLab, a research hub for the creation of climate change solutions.
The National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility (NBAF) opened in May of 2023 in Manhattan, Kan. Enabling the rapid detection and mitigation of animal and human pathogens, the $1.25 billion complex provides state-of-the-art biocontainment labs supported by robust ventilation and decontamination systems. Sited on 48 acres adjacent to Kansas State University, the 708,000-sf development provides enhanced diagnostic and research capabilities to protect the country from emerging, zoonotic, and foreign animal diseases.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration will begin construction in mid-2023 on a high-performance laboratory building to replace its current aging facility in Lakewood, Colo. The three-story, 70,000-sf structure located at the Denver Federal Center will provide sophisticated testing suites, analytical labs, and collaborative research spaces.
The United States Congress passed Senate Bill 5002 in late 2022 to allow methods other than animal testing to be employed to establish drug efficacy and safety. Dubbed the FDA Modernization Act 2.0, the legislation supports the inclusion of cell-based assays, computer models, and microphysiological systems such as organ chips in preclinical testing operations. The bill also rescinds a stipulation that animal studies must be used when seeking a license for a biological product that is biosimilar or interchangeable with another product.
Auburn University opened the $83 million Advanced Classroom and Laboratory Complex (ACLC) in fall of 2022. Designed by Perkins&Will, the 151,000-sf facility provides flexible learning venues, teaching and research labs, and over 12,000 sf of informal interaction space. On the ground floor, a trio of lecture halls with integrated audiovisual recording technologies can seat 96, 200, and 300 students respectively.
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) launched the Net Zero Labs Pilot Initiative in May of 2022 to accelerate the deployment of clean energy technologies at National Laboratories. Supporting President Biden's climate goals, the program will catalyze the creation of net-zero solutions that can be replicated by federal, state, and local governments. Phase 3 Real Estate Partners and Bain Capital are constructing the Genesis Marina life sciences campus in Brisbane, Calif. Providing over 570,000 rsf of Class A laboratory and office space, the three-building complex will offer floor plates of up to 42,000 sf serviced by robust MEP infrastructure.
Life sciences developer IQHQ began construction in April of 2021 on the $1 billion Fenway Center in Boston. Created in collaboration with Meredith Management, the biomedical research hub will be situated over the Massachusetts Turnpike on an air rights deck. The amenity-rich campus will include two towers offering 960,000 sf of leasable lab and office space, 10,000 sf of ground-floor retail, and an automated parking garage.
The Olivia Business Centre was awarded the highest WELL Health-Safety Rating in March of 2021 by the International WELL Building Institute. 4Front Ventures is planning a 558,000-sf expansion of its cannabis cultivation center in Elk Grove, Ill. Supporting the production of 4Front's branded flower, edibles, tinctures, and concentrates, the campus will be the largest cannabis operation in the state of Illinois to date. Representing an investment of $45 million, the first 258,000-sf phase of construction will include 65,000-sf of flowering canopy space and a 70,000-sf manufacturing facility. Construction will begin in 2022 with operations commencing by the end of the year.
ApiJect will break ground in December of 2020 on the Gigafactory campus in Durham, N.C. Strategically sited in Research Triangle Park, the complex will be the world’s largest pharmaceutical fill-finish facility, offering an annual production capacity of three billion single-dose prefilled injectors. Funded by a federal loan of $590 million, the one million-sf project will provide BSL-2 manufacturing areas, cold and ultra-cold storage infrastructure, and an onsite needle and cannula factory.
