Matrix Innovation Center opened the Matrix ONE lab and office building in May of 2023 in the Amsterdam Science Park. Designed by MVRDV, the 140,000-sf structure provides flexible labs and offices, a 100-seat auditorium, and a range of settings for informal interaction. As well as offering leasable space for private companies, Matrix ONE houses SustainaLab, a research hub for the creation of climate change solutions.
Incorporating over 120,000 reusable components, the six-story facility was delivered using demountable construction technologies that will allow over 90 percent of the products and materials to be repurposed at the end of the building’s lifetime. A unique zigzag-shaped staircase channels natural ventilation upwards through the biophilic development, which leverages sophisticated modular infrastructure to enable ease of conversion between lab and office functions. Energy consumption is reduced by smart lighting and heating fixtures, with power for critical lab equipment on a separate circuit.
Ground was broken in December of 2020 on Matrix ONE, which acts as the central social nexus of a seven-building research complex. Featuring internal green walls and a green roof with over 10,000 sf of solar panels, the sustainably designed facility has attained BREEAM Excellent certification. The project team included construction manager De Vries en Verburg, structural engineer IMD, MEP engineer Deerns, cost consultant IGG, sustainability advisor ATKB, interior design consultant UP Architecture, and project coordinator Stone 22.
