University of Arizona Constructs Biomedical Research Facilities

Construction has begun on two new buildings on the University of Arizona, Tucson campus: the Institute for Biomedical Science and Biotechnology (IBSB) and the Medical Research Building (MRB). Designed by Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Partnership, both facilities are comprised of four levels of highly flexible research, office, and support spaces with a connection to a below-ground vivarium. A physical link, inside and out, will facilitate collaboration among multidisciplined sciences. The buildings will frame a central courtyard envisioned as the social heart of the new research community.

Sequoia Hospital To Rebuild Redwood City Facility

Sequoia Hospital has decided to build a new hospital at its current Redwood City, Calif., site after a year of seeking a new area location. The $300-million project will rebuild the hospital to meet seismic standards and create additional medical offices. The new hospital will be constructed in the existing facility’s parking lot. Construction will begin in 2006 with occupancy scheduled for 2009.

Merck Develops Boston Research Center

Pharmaceutical giant Merck is constructing a 300,000-sf facility in the Longwood Medical Area of Boston. Slated to open in late 2004, the 18-story facility will employ 450 workers.

Baltimore Gas and Electric Creates New Headquarters

Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. (BGE) will renovate its historic East Tower facility in Baltimore to serve as the company’s new headquarters. Housing over 500 employees, the project will include retail space on the first level. The 18-month renovation is expected to reach completion in mid- to late 2005. BGE recently sold the West Tower, the site of the company’s former headquarters. Construction will include separation of the infrastructure of the two buildings as well as HVAC, electrical, and elevator upgrades.

OSU Expands College of Veterinary Medicine

Oregon State University will complete the first phase of expansion of its College of Veterinary Medicine in fall of 2004, adding a small animal hospital to Magruder Hall. The entire veterinary medicine program will be brought to Corvallis from where it was previously taught at Washington State University’s Pullman campus. The second $10-million expansion phase will add 33,000 sf to Magruder Hall’s large animal hospital.
