Bristol-Myers Constructs Biologics Manufacturing Plant

Bristol-Myers will construct a 750,000-sf large-scale biologics manufacturing faciltiy on 85 acres at the former Fort Devens Army Base in Devens, Mass. The $1.1-billion project includes a $660-million capital expenditure by Bristol-Myers to construct a plant for the the manufacturing of biologics compounds including the rheumatoid arthritis treatment Orencia. Construction will begin in September 2006 with completion slated for 2009 and production to begin in late 2011.

UCSD Completes Biomedical Library Expansion

The University of California, San Diego completed the $17-million expansion and renovation of the Biomedical Library on its La Jolla, Calif., campus in late spring of 2006. McCarthy Building Companies served as construction manager and general contractor for the project, which entailed the addition of 43,454 sf of space to the existing 32,950-sf library, as well as renovation of the existing structure. Los Angeles-based Pfeiffer Partners was the architect.

SUNY University Hospital Plans Vertical Pediatric Expansion

The State University of New York's University Hospital is planning a $118.9-million vertical expansion of its Syracuse facility. The project will consist of a six-story addition constructed on top of the hospital's east wing to house oncology, neurology, and cardiology services, and two floors dedicated to the the Golisano Children's Hospital of Central New York. The project architect is Karlsberger Companies with King and King Architects of Manlius as associate architect.

University of Puerto Rico Expands for Medical Research

The University of Puerto Rico (UPR) at Mayaguez has plans to break ground in summer 2006 on the $15-million Bioprocess Institute, which will provide both capacity for  monoclonal bioprocess research as well as perform pilot-scale production. At UPR's Rio Piedras campus, the $85-million, 150,000-sf Molecular Sciences Complex will break ground later in 2006.

Oregon Health and Science University Builds Center for Health

Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) is nearing completion of construction on it's new  $145.4-million Center for Health and Healing. The 400,000-sf, mixed-use facility is engineered for a LEED Platinum rating.  OHSU expects to save $700,000 annually in energy and operating costs thanks to the building's "green" features.
