Arizona State University Scottsdale Builds Innovation Center
Site preparation is under way by Sundt Construction for SkySong, Arizona State University (ASU) Scottsdale's 34-acre Innovation Center. Higgins Development Parters of Chicago along with Peoria, Ill.-based The Plaza Cos. are developing the $300-million high-tech research park. The two-building first phase will provide over 300,000 sf for office and retail space, of which ASU will occupy 80,000 sf. The scheduled opening of phase one is early 2007.
Ohio University Plans New Research and Classroom Building
Schematic design has been completed for Ohio University's new Integrated Learning and Research Facility that will house both The Russ College of Engineering and Technology as well as the College of Osteopathic Medicine. Currently, primary research facilities for both colleges are housed in converted residence halls. Burgess & Niple of Columbus, Ohio, has prepared the plans for the $30-million project, which will go out for bids in about nine months.
University of California San Francisco Builds Diller Family Cancer Research Center
The University of California San Francisco (UCSF) broke ground in April 2006 on the Helen Diller Family Cancer Research Building, a five-story, 160,000-sf facility designed by Rafael Vinoly. The building will more than double the space for UCSF Comprehensive Cancer Center researchers to focus on a variety of cancers including prostate, kidney,and brain. The UCSF Cancer Research Institute will be housed in the new facility, where research on the basic biological mechanisms of cancer will be carried out in 15 major laboratories.
NIH Dedicates New Biodefense Center
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) dedicated its new $182.6-million C.W. Bill Young Center for Biodefense and Emergine Infectious Diseases building in April 2006. Research in the 84,000-nsf building will focus on infectious diseases of global importance when it opens for occupancy later this year. Construction of the facility began in November 2003 and was completed in December 2005. It accommodates BSL-2 and BSL-3 labs and animal care areas, plus offices and conference rooms and a 1,250-car garage.
Wake Forest University Opens Biotechnology Research Facility 1
Wake Forest University and industry partners celebrated the grand opening of the 189,000-sf Biotechnology Research Facility 1 in Winston-Salem's Piedmont Triad Research Park in May of 2006. The five-story, $60-million facility will house space for private companies and academic space for Wake Forest Health Sciences' Institute for Regenerative Medicine and the Lipid Sciences program.
