George Mason University opened the $107 million Life Sciences and Engineering Building in Manassas in March of 2025. Located on the SciTech campus, the 132,000-sf facility leverages a central location in Virginia’s tech corridor to drive advances in research and education. The four-story structure houses growing programs within the colleges of Engineering and Computing, Science, Education and Human Development, and Visual and Performing Arts. Other primary users include students enrolled in STEM-H majors such as kinesiology, materials science, forensic science, bioengineering, and mechanical engineering.

Designed by Page, the LEED Silver building offers highly specialized instruction labs, classrooms, support areas, and faculty and administrative offices. Advanced research laboratories and flexible innovation zones catalyze breakthroughs in bioengineering, bioinformatics, and computational life sciences. To optimize space use for an increasingly multidisciplinary curriculum, the dynamic facility is organized around typologies, such as wet and dry functions, human performance, and student design. With more than 30 different lab environments for teaching, prototyping, and fabrication, the collaborative development enables immersive learning in disciplines including microbiology, chemistry, robotics, and sports science.

Skanska USA delivered the project for a construction contract value of $84.5 million. Mueller Associates provided MEP, fire protection, and sustainability engineering services. Ground was broken on the Life Sciences and Engineering Building in April of 2022.
