Barnard College is constructing the Roy & Diana Vagelos Science Center in New York to foster excellence in STEM education, innovation, and scholarship. Representing an investment of approximately $240 million, the expansion and renovation will transform the existing Altschul Hall into a modern hub for innovative teaching and research. The 169,000-sf structure will house all of Barnard’s bench sciences, including the departments of biology, chemistry, environmental science, neuroscience and behavior, and physics and astronomy.
Perkins&Will’s vision for the project includes a restacking and transformation of the existing facility, as well a 14-story addition with 87,000 sf of programmable research space which is contiguous to new classrooms for optimized curriculum delivery. The building’s layout is intentionally arranged to maximize intellectual collaboration and promote interdisciplinary synergies while supporting specific departmental needs. A new vivarium will feature an acoustic screen wall to mitigate sound and vibration. The expansion also will provide ample opportunities for students to participate in the Summer Research Institute’s faculty-mentored programs. A community classroom will host workshops and interactive exhibits to further Barnard’s STEM outreach programs to the local community.
The net-zero carbon, all-electric academic science building will be the first of its kind in New York City and supports Barnard’s goal of achieving net-zero operational carbon by 2040. Targeting LEED Gold, the project integrates critical decarbonization strategies such as retaining the existing structure to minimize use of new materials, insulating the building envelope, and revamping the exterior with high performance glazing. A green roof and a living wall that utilizes reclaimed water and compost from the waste stream will operate as part of the development’s upgraded HVAC systems. A steam boiler plant powered by gas and oil will be replaced with a new heat pump design that electrifies heating and domestic water.
The Vagelos Science Center is being delivered by Pavarini McGovern with Lehrer Cumming as the owner’s representative. Occupancy is expected in 2026.
