Imperial College London opened the £120 million Laboratory of Medical Sciences in January of 2024 on the Hammersmith Hospital Campus. Designed by Hawkins\Brown to support team science, this collaborative hub for translational research accommodates programs in genetics, sex-based disease differences, and heart and metabolic disorders. The 130,000-sf structure features highly controlled lab environments carefully interwoven with comfortable write-up spaces and shared amenities. A modular layout ensures that both specialized and multipurpose labs can be easily adapted to meet future needs. Breakout areas are spread throughout the eight-story development, complemented by an expansive atrium with a staircase that visually connects all floors. Housing 400 investigators, the interdisciplinary facility also includes a café on the seventh level that opens onto an external terrace.
Strategically sited in the White City Innovation District, the Laboratory of Medical Sciences is one of only two labs in the United Kingdom to be wholly funded by the UKRI Medical Research Council. Turner & Townsend provided project management services with Buro Happold and Curtins as structural engineers, Briggs & Forrester as service engineer, Abell Nepp as lab planner, and Kebble Environmental Services as commissioning agent. General contractor Walter Lilly began work on the facility in 2017 with substantial completion in November of 2022.
