The University of Iowa will begin construction in fall of 2023 on the $249 million Health Sciences Academic Building in Iowa City. Offering instructional, administrative, clinical, and research space, the 263,000-gsf facility will strategically collocate programs in communication sciences and disorders, health and human physiology, and physical therapy and rehabilitation science. Leading-edge learning environments will prepare the next generation of medical professionals to deliver patient-centered care in collaboration with other specialists. The six-story structure will be built in two phases to enable the construction of an adjacent hospital tower, which necessitates the demolition and rapid relocation of the existing Wendell Johnson Speech and Hearing Center. The communication sciences component of the development will open first, followed by the other two departments.
The project team incudes RDG Planning & Design and Miron Construction Company. Completion is expected in mid-2025.
