The U.S. Department of Energy broke ground in October of 2022 on the $86.2 million Science and User Support Center at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, N.Y. Designed by Gensler and Burns & McDonnell, the 75,000-gsf structure will act as a welcome center and innovation hub for visiting researchers, guests, and facility users. Modern, configurable conference spaces will promote interaction among investigators as they explore interdisciplinary synergies and discover new technologies and solutions. The three-story project will also provide flexible office accommodation for approximately 250 employees. E.W. Howell Company was awarded the $61.8 million construction contract for the facility, which is slated for occupancy in late 2024.

The Science and User Support Center represents the first phase of the planned Discovery Park complex which will act as a new gateway to the Brookhaven Lab campus. Sited on 60 acres of previously used, publicly accessible land, the 600,000-gsf development will include a research facility for the New York Center for Grid Innovation, a science education venue, an extended-stay hotel, and a technology park.
