Claremont McKenna College broke ground in October of 2022 on the Robert Day Sciences Center in Claremont, Calif. Designed by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), the 135,000-sf facility will provide the Kravis Department of Integrated Sciences with classrooms, collaboration spaces, teaching and research labs, and faculty offices. The open, light-filled structure will embody the convergence of computational, life, and social sciences by supporting a progressive pedagogy focused on three key areas: Gene, Brain, and Planet. By collocating biomedical, neurological, and environmental programs, this interdisciplinary nexus will catalyze the discovery of innovative solutions for today's pressing global challenges. The college has yet to announce the construction cost for the project, which is funded in part by a $40 million donation.
Incorporating extensive interior and exterior glazing, the center comprises two parallel wings framed by wooden trusses. Stacked volumes of labs and classrooms, each rotated 45 degrees from the floor below, will surround a soaring, column-free atrium with a grand staircase. LEED Gold certification will be sought for the sustainably designed facility, which will feature eight green roof terraces offering a variety of outdoor settings. Over 9,000 sf of photovoltaic panels will produce up to 230 megawatt hours of energy per year. The project team includes structural engineer Saiful Bouquet, MEP engineer ACCO, civil engineer Atlas Civil Design, electrical and fire protection engineer Rosendin Electric, MEP and LEED consultant WSP, land planning consultant Jacobs, and acoustical and IT engineer Arup. Occupancy is expected in fall of 2024.
