St. Luke's Medical Center Builds Heart Tower

St. Luke’s Medical Center is constructing a new 435,000-sf heart tower on its 17-acre Milwaukee campus. Due to space restrictions, the tower will be constructed as an elevated facility over an existing parking structure. Designed by Kahler Slater of Milwaukee, the facility will house 270 beds; 192 beds will accommodate surgical patients and 78 beds will accommodate intensive care patients. All rooms will be private.

Providence Hospital Completes Mobile Decontamination Unit

Providence Hospital in Southfield, Mich., has completed its new 225,000-sf mobile decontamination unit. The mass-rinse center can service up to 75 people an hour and is equipped with eight shower heads inside and four outside. The $150,000 facility consists of three suites in which patients remove clothes, shower, and redress in gowns. The decontamination system was designed by Kohler Mobile Plumbing Systems based in Kohler, Wis.

Kaiser Rebuilds Redwood City Campus

Kaiser Permanente is planning to construct up to 900,000 sf as it rebuilds its 16-acre campus in Redwood City, Calif. Tripling the medical square footage on the site, the project will include four medical centers, a new hospital, and up to four parking lots. The lead architect is Gordon Chong of San Francisco. Construction may begin on one of the four medical office facilities in early 2004.

Richardson Regional Medical Center Breaks Ground on New Campus

Richardson Regional Medical Center broke ground in early September 2003 on its $49-million Bush/Renner campus in Richardson, Texas. The first development phase of the 20.5-acre site will include a 100,000-sf, five-story medical office building opening in August 2004, and an outpatient surgery center and an urgent care center to open in fall of 2004. The master plan for the site details a physical rehabilitation center, a second physician office building, and a 500-bed acute care hospital. A comprehensive cancer center could also be constructed on the site.

University of Michigan Plans Cardiovascular Center

The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor has selected Boston-based Shepley Bullfinch Richardson and Abbott to design its new 350,000-sf cardiovascular center. The center will accommodate 20 intensive care beds, six operating rooms, five cardiac catheterization labs, five electrophysiology labs, two interventional radiology operating rooms, 36 outpatient exam rooms, and a non-invasive testing suite. Construction will begin in fall 2003 with completion in spring 2007.

Sibley Memorial Hospital Completes Decontamination Facility

Sibley Memorial Hospital recently completed a new decontamination facility at its Washington, D.C. location. In the event of a bioterrorist attack, the unit’s five showers and two dedicated rinse areas can accommodate up to fifty people per hour and a total of seven people at one time. The decontamination facility is located just outside Sibley’s emergency department.

Ellis Hospital Plans Schenectady ICU

Ellis Hospital plans to build a new $20-million, 36-bed intensive care unit at its Schenectady, N.Y., location. The two-floor unit will be located in the hospital’s A-wing to allow critically ill patients access to key services. Work is expected to begin in summer 2004 and reach completion in 18 months. The facility will replace the hospital’s 20-bed ICU that was built in 1973.

Kaiser Opens Elk Grove Medical Office

Kaiser Permanente is opening its new 102,000-sf Elk Grove, Calif. medical office building in early September 2003. The three-story, $34-million facility will accommodate 62 providers and 180 support staff engaged in obstetrics/gynecology, adult medicine, pediatrics, optometry, optical sales, radiology, psychiatry, laboratory, and pharmacy. The building will feature a health education center and Mohs skin cancer surgery services. The Elk Grove facility is part of Kaiser’s $1.6-billion 10-year development plan for the Greater Sacramento area.

Northside Hospital-Forsyth Plans ER Expansion

Northside Hospital-Forsyth is planning a $23-million expansion of its Cumming, Ga., emergency department. A two-story, 39,000-sf structure and a 12,500-sf addition will be constructed, and 16,900 sf of existing space will be renovated. The project, which more than doubles the size of the department, will also provide expanded radiology imaging capacity.

Palo Alto Medical Foundation Constructs Clark Building

Palo Alto Medical Foundation is planning the $23-million Clark Building, a 39,000-sf addition to the 300,000-sf medical clinic. Located adjacent to Stanford University, the space will house physician offices and the clinic’s sports medicine services. Plans are expected to be approved in October 2003. Funding for the building comes in part from a $5-million donation from the James H. Clark Charitable Foundation.

Sutter Tracy Community Hospital Begins Expansion

Sutter Tracy Community Hospital broke ground on its $23-million expansion in August 2003. The obstetrics department will be expanded by half, with four new patient rooms, a classroom, and a larger waiting room area. The number of treatment bays in the emergency room will increase from 9 to 14, with the waiting room expanding fivefold and the addition of a new waiting area for children. The existing surgery center will be remodeled, and a new 9,600-sf surgery center with 12 new outpatient rooms and facilities for ambulatory surgery procedures will be constructed.

Baptist Health System Develops Jacksonville Projects

Baptist Health System has contracted QORE Property Science of Jacksonville, Fla., to provide quality control services on two major construction projects in Jacksonville. Baptist Medical Center will expand with a four-story addition and four-story parking garage. Baptist South, a new 92-bed hospital, will be constructed on the Southside. Both projects are slated for completion in 12 months.

Ambulatory Surgery Centers Develops Texas Facility

Ambulatory Surgery Centers of America is developing the Rockwall Surgery Center, a 9,000-sf freestanding outpatient surgery center sited on 1.2 acres in Rockwall, Texas. Construction will begin in September 2003 on the $5-million facility which will open in March 2004. The facility will house three operating rooms and will provide orthopedic, general surgery, gynecology, colon and rectal, colonoscopy, ear-nose-throat, podiatry, and pain management services. Ambulatory Surgery Centers, a physician-owned company headquartered in Norwell, Mass., will manage the new facility.
