Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center Expansion in Progress

Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., has reached the halfway mark on its $166 million “Project for Progress”. Construction manager McCarthy is overseeing 460,000 sf of new construction and 350,000 sf of renovations to provide enhanced hospital accessibility and additional space for outpatient, emergency, and cancer treatment services. The project includes a 550-space parking structure and a new MRI. Completion is expected in winter of 2005.

Torrance Medical Center Constructs West Campus Tower

Torrance Medical Center is constructing the 94,500-sf West Campus Tower in Torrance, Calif. Designed by Torrance-based Hamilton Klow & Associates, the 5-level facility includes an interconnecting bridge linking the tower to the existing hospital. Project contractor McCarthy will complete construction in spring of 2004.

Harvard Medical School Opens Conference Center

Harvard Medical School has officially opened its new 8,500-sf conference center in Boston, Mass. Sited in the school’s 525,000-sf New Research Building, the facility features a 480-seat amphitheater, seven meeting rooms, and a café.

Lahey Clinic Plans Burlington Expansion

The Lahey Clinic is planning a $135 million expansion of its Burlington, Mass. hospital. The project will add over seven stories, over 70 beds, a cancer center, four operation rooms, and a four-level parking garage with 1,200 spaces. The Lahey Clinic currently has 259 licensed beds.

Potomac Hospital Expands Woodbridge Campus

Potomac Hospital broke ground in October 2003 on a 180,000-sf addition to its Woodbridge, D.C., hospital. The four-story, 144-bed facility will replace the inpatient care units as well as housing support services, a cafeteria, and an education center. Designed by McCulloch England Associates, the $75 million project is being constructed and managed by Bovis Lend Lease and Twin Contracting. Completion is scheduled for December 2005.

Denver Health Opens Secure Facility

Denver Health’s new $45.9 million expansion opened in June of 2003. The four-story, 143,000-sf wing brought intensive care unit bed space from eleven beds separated by curtains to 24 private rooms.  A secure 21-bed correctional inpatient and outpatient facility is located in the basement, with security cameras and doors and guard stations. The wing also houses 52 medical/surgical private rooms and space for orthopedic services. Gerald H. Phipps Construction was the general contractor for the project, which began in September 2001.

Sutter Health Plans Camino Medical Facility in Mountain View

Sutter Health is working with affiliate Palo Alto Medical Foundation to build a 275,000-sf facility for Camino Medical Group in Mountain View, Calif. Sited on nine acres, the facility will house physician offices, a diagnostic center, outpatient operating rooms, a laboratory, a pharmacy, and an urgent-care center.

Raleigh Community Hospital Develops Cancer and Cardiac Centers

Raleigh Community Hospital is constructing a new 21,000-sf cancer center. The $7.2-million facility will house the radiation therapy center, conference facilities, and medical education space. The hospital also began work on a $21.3 million cardiac center in September 2003. Both facilities are expected to reach completion in spring of 2004.

Harvard Medical School Completes New Research Building

Harvard Medical School (HMS) has completed the New Research Building (NRB) at its Cambridge, Mass., campus. Designed by ARC/Architectural Resources Cambridge, the 525,000-sf building is the largest expansion of the medical campus in nearly a century. The NRB houses approximately 800 researchers and staff from various disciplines that will work to pursue treatments for Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and other diseases.

St. Vincent's Hospital Expands Emergency Department

St. Vincent’s Hospital has expanded its Jacksonville, Fla. emergency department from 12,000-sf to 29,000-sf. Increasing bed count from 30 to 49, the expansion project cost $4 million in construction costs and $900,000 for new equipment. Nineteen exam rooms were added, with six equipped for the needs of patients experiencing chest pain. The project architect was JSA Inc., with engineer Tilden, Lobnitz and Cooper and contractor Auld & White Constructors. The facility opened on September 15, 2003.

Monongahela Valley Hospital Plans Emergency Decontamination Unit

Monongahela Valley Hospital is planning to double the capacity of its emergency department with an $8-million expansion project. Increasing the number of treatment rooms from 12 to 24, the expansion will increase the size of the department from 7,100-sf to 18,450-sf. A decontamination room, a new security office, and an isolation room for patients with infectious respiratory diseases will also be constructed. Monongahela Valley Hospital is located in Monongahela, Pa. Construction is slated to begin in early 2004 with completion expected in 2005.

Presbyterian Healthcare Breaks Ground on Rio Rancho Medical Center

Presbyterian Healthcare Services broke ground in mid-September 2003 on the 65,000-sf Rio Rancho Medical Center in Rio Rancho, N.M. Employing approximately 40 physicians and specialists, the $17-million center will offer services including cardiology, dermatology, obstetrics and gynecology, physical therapy, podiatry, pain management, and behavioral health. The project architect is Dekker/Perich/Sabatini with Klinger Constructors as general contractor. Completion is expected in May 2004.

International Center for Advancement of Nursing Planned in Albany

The International Center for Advancement of Nursing will locate its headquarters in a former state office building in Albany, N.Y recently purchased by Renaissance Corp. for $3.9 million. Renaissance Corp. will spend an additional $8-million on building renovations. Of the 165,000-sf facility, 52,000 sf will continue to be leased to the state for three more years. Biomedical research companies will also occupy the space at the center.
