Mount Desert Island Biological Lab Plans Center for Marine Functional Genomic Studies

The Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory will construct the Center for Marine Functional Genomic Studies in Salisbury Cove, Maine. The 13,267-sf facility will house multidisciplinary research labs, core facilities, and support space. The building will also provide research space for Maine's IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE). The project is supported by $3.8 million in federal stimulus funding.

Texas A&M University Plans Interdisciplinary Life Sciences Build-Out

Texas A&M University will build out 12,680 asf of shell space in the Interdisciplinary Life Sciences Building in College Station to house laboratories, equipment, and cold room space. Accommodating research in structural biology, synthetic chemistry, drug discovery, molecular virology, and cancer biology, the project will support collaborative translational research. The facility is supported by $3.5 million in federal stimulus funding and will meet LEED Silver sustainable design standards.

Temple University School of Medicine Plans Institute for Translational Neuroscience

Temple University School of Medicine is planning to construct the 32,400-sf Institute for Translational Neuroscience in Philadelphia. Providing research laboratories for 31 faculty members, the contiguous research facility will be built in existing shell space on the eighth floor of an existing building. The project is supported by $11.8 million in federal stimulus funding. LEED sustainable design certification will be sought for the facility.

Forsyth Institute Creates Interdisciplinary Research Facility

The Forsyth Institute will renovate 8,935 sf adjacent to its new Kendall Square facility in Boston to create the Center for Discovery at the Host-Biofilm Interface (CHBI). Supported by $3 million in federal stimulus funding, the interdisciplinary project will house oral health research programs in areas including microbiology, molecular genetics, microbial informatics, and immunology.

George Washington University Plans Research Center for the Neglected Diseases of Poverty

George Washington University will renovate 25,400 sf of existing space in Washington to create the Research Center for the Neglected Diseases of Poverty. Housing translational research facilities for the development of new vaccines, therapeutics, and diagnostics, the center will support the study of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) and neglected infections of poverty (NIPs) such as hookworm, schistosomiasis, opisthorchiasis, and toxoplasmosis. The multidisciplinary project is supported by $15 million in federal stimulus funding.

Duke University Creates Biomedical Research Vivarium

Duke University will create a biomedical research facility in the Fitzpatrick Center for Interdisciplinary Engineering, Medicine and Applied Sciences in Durham, N.C. Supported by $4.2 million in federal stimulus funding, the project includes conversion of existing shell space to house a vivarium, research laboratories, and offices. Supporting translational research for the development of advanced therapeutics, the facility will provide 2,520 mouse cages, 480 rat cages, and 40 cages for other species.

Medical University of South Carolina Renovates Basic Sciences Building

Medical University of South Carolina will renovate the second and third floors of its Basic Sciences Building in Charleston, S.C. Supported by $15 million in federal stimulus funding, the project will provide advanced laboratories for multidisciplinary research. A-13,700-sf area on the second floor will be renovated to provide labs for molecular therapy, biodefense, emerging infectious diseases, microbiology, and basic immunology. The third floor will provide 19,000 sf of pharmacology, drug discovery, and pharmacogenetics research space.

Concorde Gruppe and Healthcare of Today Partner on Stem Cell Facility

Concorde Gruppe GmbH is partnering with Healthcare of Today to build a €50 million stem cell research and treatment facility in Adunatii Copaceni, Romania. Completion is expected in mid-2012. University of Florida's Biomedical Sciences Building Attains LEED Gold

The University of Florida's $90.5 million Biomedical Sciences Building in Gainesville was awarded LEED Gold sustainable design certification in July of 2010. The eight-story, 163,000-sf translational research facility houses the Health Science Center Colleges, the Biomedical Engineering Department of the College of Engineering, and Animal Care Services. The building opened in November of 2009 and was dedicated in May of 2010.

Wayne County Builds Michigan Center for Regenerative Medicine

Wayne County will begin construction in July of 2010 on the $1.5 million Michigan Center for Regenerative Medicine in Plymouth. The 21,000-sf facility will house wet labs, offices, and manufacturing space to support stem cell research and development for the pharmaceutical and biotech industries. The center will be operated by Michigan Research Institute in Ann Arbor with Innovative BioTherapies as the anchor tenant. Completion is expected in late fall of 2010.

University of Mississippi Expands Cochran Research Center

The University of Mississippi will construct a second research facility at the Thad Cochran Research Center in Oxford, Miss. Providing expanded research space for the university's National Center for Natural Products Research, the building will include FDA clinical research labs and a botanical specimen repository.  The project is supported by $31.7 million in funding from three federal agencies. Completion is expected in summer of 2013.

University of South Florida Plans Medical Training Center

The University of South Florida is planning to construct the $20 million Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation (CAMLS) in Tampa. Construction will begin on the 60,000-sf facility by January of 2011. The building will include an advanced surgical training laboratory, a virtual hospital with simulators, and a 150-seat videoconferencing auditorium. Completion is expected in 2012.
