Ohio State University Medical Center broke ground on a $1 billion expansion in June of 2010. Located in Columbus, Ohio, the 17-story tower will house the academic medical center's new critical care and cancer hospitals. Completion is expected in 2014. The 276-bed Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital will occupy seven floors and the 144-bed critical care hospital will occupy three floors. The tower will also house laboratory and office space. The project includes completion of three floors in the existing biomedical research tower and electrical upgrades.

Baylor College of Medicine will build out three floors in the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute (NRI) in Houston to accommodate translational research. The project is supported by $14.9 million in federal stimulus funding and will include research laboratories, offices, and the NMR Metabolomic Core. Completion is expected in spring of 2012.

Newcastle University has selected ISG to construct the £7.1 million Translational Research Building in the United Kingdom. Housing research space, clinical facilities, and a business incubator, the four-story project will link the Henry Wellcome Biogerontology Building and the Clinical Ageing Research Unit. Completion is expected in summer of 2011.

BloodCenter of Wisconsin will build out 7,000 sf of shell space at its Milwaukee Blood Research Institute facility to create a 4,771-sf stem cell research laboratory. Supported by $2.9 million in federal stimulus funding, the project will provide 10 modules and adjacent alcoves, a 1,655-nsf core lab, and GMP cleanroom manufacturing space.

The University of North Carolina is constructing the $87 million Dental Sciences Building in Chapel Hill. The five-story, 216,000-sf building will house research, academic, preclinical, and administrative facilities. The architect of record for the project is Flad Architects with KBR as general contractor. LEED Silver sustainable design certification will be sought for the facility. Completion is expected in January of 2012.

Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center is initiating a 4,156-sf renovation of the Center for Translational Molecular Imaging in Baltimore. Supported by $7 million in federal stimulus funding, the project will create an imaging suite with a dual modality PET scanner and a reagents manufacturing laboratory. The sustainably designed facility will feature HEPA filtration and is slated for completion by January of 2012.

Texas A&M University is partnering with M.D. Anderson Cancer Center to build the National Center for Therapeutic Manufacturing. The 153,000-sf research and development complex is under construction in College Station with completion expected in late 2011. Designed to accelerate the development of oncology therapeutics and vaccines for infectious diseases, the facility will provide research labs, biological pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities, and modular cleanroom pods.

Banner Alzheimer’s Institute is initiating an expansion of its Phoenix research facilities. Supported by $6.5 million in federal stimulus funding, the 18,000-sf project will house advanced imaging instrumentation for the study of neurological diseases and cancer. Occupancy is expected in fall of 2011.

Shared Facilities for Stem Cell Research was awarded $27.3 million by the state of New York to build and operate core facilities for stem cell research. Nine other institutions in the state also received funding for biomedical research infrastructure development. A total of $30.5 million was awarded in May of 2010 by the New York State Stem Cell Science (NYSTEM) program.

The University of California Los Angeles will begin construction in November of 2010 on the $115.6 million Edie and Lew Wasserman Eye Research Center. Housing the Jules Stein Eye Institute and the departments of neurosurgery and urologic oncology of the Geffen School of Medicine, the six-story, 100,000-sf project will provide research laboratories, surgical suites, a conference center, medical training and simulation facilities, a telemedicine center, and patient care. The facility is being designed by Richard Meier & Partners Architects.

Indiana University School of Medicine is initiating a renovation at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis to house pediatric translational research. The 18,500-sf facility will provide laboratories, bio-storage, a videoconferencing suite, and office space. Completion is expected in late 2012. The renovation is supported by nearly $8.4 million in federal stimulus funding.

The University of Arizona College of Medicine broke ground in May of 2010 on the $187 million Health Sciences Education Building. Located on the Phoenix Biomedical Campus, the 268,000-sf interdisciplinary facility will provide classrooms, laboratories, pre-clinical training suites, faculty offices, and study areas. The building will also house programs for the UA College of Pharmacy, Northern Arizona University’s College of Health and Human Services, and Arizona State University’s College of Nursing.

Hartford Hospital was awarded $3.2 million in federal stimulus funding in early 2010 to construct two additions to the Olin Neuropsychiatry Research Center in Hartford, Conn. The two-story, 6,700-sf facility Research Staff Addition will be built as an expansion of the Huntington Building. A new MRI instrument will be located in the 1,800-sf ONRC Magnet addition.

The University of Cincinnati is planning a renovation of 8,910 sf in Kettering Laboratory to house environmental health research. Supported by $4.8 million in federal stimulus funding, the project will also include conversion of an existing 4,355 gsf atrium to create interdisciplinary research space. Designed to optimize energy performance and efficiency, the completed facility will house the transdisciplinary Center for Epigenetic Epidemiology.

Ohio State University is planning two research facility renovation projects in Columbus. Both projects are supported by federal stimulus funding and are slated for completion in 2014. An award of $8 million will support the buildout of 24,000 asf in the Biomedical Research Tower to accommodate the Experimental Therapeutics Program of The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center.
